Project description:The increased urban pressures are often associated with specialization of microbial communities. Microbial communities being a critical player in the geochemical processes, makes it important to identify key environmental parameters that influence the community structure and its function.In this proect we study the influence of land use type and environmental parameters on the structure and function of microbial communities. The present study was conducted in an urban catchment, where the metal and pollutants levels are under allowable limits. The overall goal of this study is to understand the role of engineered physicochemical environment on the structure and function of microbial communities in urban storm-water canals. Microbial community structure was determined using PhyoChio (G3) Water and sediment samples were collected after a rain event from Sungei Ulu Pandan watershed of >25km2, which has two major land use types: Residential and industrial. Samples were analyzed for physicochemical variables and microbial community structure and composition. Microbial community structure was determined using PhyoChio (G3)

A microarray-based analysis of oocytes quality of the European clam Ruditapes decussatus

Project description:The European clam, Ruditapes decussatus (Linnaeus, 1758) is a bivalve mollusc of the family Veneridae native to the European Atlantic and Mediterranean coastal waters. Its production is exclusively based on natural recruitment, which is subject to high annual fluctuations due to adversely affected by pollution and other environmental factors. A microarray-based analysis was performed with the objectives of describe genomic feature of oocytes and identify potential markers of oocyte quality in the economically important European clam, Ruditapes decussatus. The oocytes of a total of 25 females from Ria de Aveiro, Western coast of Portugal, were selected for this study and their quality was estimated by early developmental success until D-larval rate, under controlled conditions.

Transcriptome analysis of virulence factors in Vibrio parahaemolyticus FORC_022, isolated from a soy sauce marinated crab

Project description:Crab is one of the major source for V. parahaemolyticus outbreak among aquatic products in Northeast Asian due to improperly cooking and wound infection by mishandling. However, there is no report on whole genome sequence of V. parahaemolyticus isolated from contaminated crab, thus no information is available for major virulence factors about V. parahaemolyticus obtained from crab. Therefore, the analysis of transcriptome of isolated V. parahaemolyticus from crab products are necessary to investigate potential risk of foodborne illness by contaminated products.
