Project description:Global warming has become a critical challenge to food safety, causing severe yield losses of major crops worldwide. Here, we report that the endophytic bacterium Enterobacter sp. SA187 induces thermotolerance of crops in a sustainable manner. Microbiome diversity of wheat plants is positively influenced by SA187 in open field agriculture, indicating that beneficial microbes can be a powerful tool to enhance agriculture in open field agriculture.

Physiological and proteomic analyses indicate delayed sowing improves photosynthetic capacity in wheat flag leaves under heat stress

Project description:Background and aims Climate warming has become an indisputable fact, and wheat is among the most heat-sensitive cereal crops. Heat stress during grain filling threatens global wheat production and food security. Here, we analyzed the physiological and proteomic changes by delayed sowing on the photosynthetic capacity of winter wheat leaves under heat stress. Our aim is to provide a new cultivation way for the heat stress resistance in wheat. Methods Through 2 years field experiment and an open warming simulation system, we compared the changes in wheat grain weight, yield, photosynthetic rate, and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters under heat stress at late grain–filling stage during normal sowing and delayed sowing. At the same time, based on the iTRAQ proteomics, we compared the changes of differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) during the two sowing periods under high temperature stress.

Project description:The current study is aimed at elucidating the proteomic responses in durum wheat Triticum aestivum L triggered by native PGPB, CP_4 (Bacillus subtilis) alone and in combination with AM fungi Glomus fasciculatum under field conditions Our results suggest that native PGPB B subtilis ( in combination with AM fungi Glomus fasciculatum (B+ may promote differential abundance of multiple regulatory seed storage proteins over untreated control Thus, combined application of native PGPB and AMF could offer a more sustainable approach to enhance crop yield.

Field pathogenomics of Fusarium head blight reveals pathogen transcriptome differences due to host resistance

Project description:Fusarium head blight (FHB), caused by Fusarium graminearum, is a detrimental disease that affects small grains such as wheat around the world. Management of FHB is difficult, and improved methods of surveillance as well as a better understanding of pathogen aggressiveness are needed for improved control. F. graminearum disease severity varies depending on the resistance of the host genotype. In this study, we used the field pathogenomics method to investigate gene expression and population structure of isolates collected from wheat lines of varying resistance levels (susceptible, intermediate, and resistant) as well as an axenic control. Differential gene expression was found among isolates collected from different host genotypes. Candidate gene sets were identified for both F. graminearum infection of specific host genotypes and general infection to wheat. Population structure of isolates from different resistance level sources was the same, with all isolates belonging to the NA1 population.
