Project description:The levels of chlorophyll a and nutrient concentrations in the surface waters of the western subtropical Pacific Ocean are among the lowest globally. In addition, our knowledge of basin-scale diversity and biogeography of microbial communities in this vast extremely oligotrophic environment is still rather limited. Here, high-throughput sequencing was used to examine the biodiversity and biogeography of abundant and rare microbial assemblages throughout the water column from the surface to a depth of 3,000 m across a horizontal distance of 1,100 km in the western Pacific Ocean. Microbial alpha diversity in the 200-m layer was higher than at other depths, with Gammaproteobacteria, Alphaproteobacteria, and Clostridia as the dominant classes in all samples. Distinctly vertical distributions within the microbial communities were revealed, with no difference horizontally. Some microbes exhibited depth stratification. For example, the relative abundances of Cyanobacteria and Alphaproteobacteria decreased with depth, while Nitrososphaeria, Actinobacteria, and Gammaproteobacteria increased with depth in the aphotic layers. Furthermore, we found that environmental (selective process) and spatial (neutral process) factors had different effects on abundant and rare taxa. Geographical distance showed little effect on the dispersal of all and abundant taxa, while statistically significant distance-decay relationships were observed among the rare taxa. Temperature and chlorophyll a were strongly associated with all, abundant, and rare taxa in the photic layers, while total inorganic nitrogen was recognized as the crucial factor in the aphotic layers. Variance partitioning analysis indicated that environmental selection played a relatively important role in shaping all and abundant taxa, while the variation in rare taxa explained by environmental and spatial processes was relatively low, as more than 70% of the variation remained unexplained. This study provides novel knowledge related to microbial community diversity in the western subtropical Pacific Ocean, and the analyzes biogeographical patterns among abundant and rare taxa.

Project description:This work is a part of the Taiwan Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigation, the first large scale hydrographic and plankton survey around Taiwan (21-26°N, 119-123°E). The present study examined the influence of hydrodynamic and biological variables driven by monsoon system on the siphonophore assemblages through an annual cycle in 2004. Calycophorans, namely Chelophyes appendiculata, Diphyes chamissonis, Lensia subtiloides, Bassia bassensis, and Muggiaea atlantica, were the most dominant siphonophore species. Maximum abundance of these dominant species generally occurred during the warm period (May and August), while M. atlantica had a significantly peak abundance in February. Although no apparently temporal difference in siphonophore abundance was observed in the study, siphonophore assemblage was more diverse in August than in other sampling times. Result of a cluster analysis indicated that assemblage structure of siphonophores in the waters around Taiwan varied at temporal and spatial scales during the sampling period. The intrusions of the Kuroshio Branch Current and China Coastal Current to the study area play an important role on the transportation of siphonophores. Also, the distribution of siphonophore assemblage was closely related to the hydrographic characteristics, with temperature, chlorophyll a concentration, and zooplankton abundance being the major environmental factors affecting the spatio-temporal variability of siphonophores. This study contributes substantially to the new knowledge of the siphonophore assemblage in the tropical-temperate waters of Taiwan.

Project description:The western Pacific subtropical high (WPSH) has a significant effect on droughts, heat waves, and tropical cyclone tracks over East Asia and the northwest Pacific. The WPSH has intensified during the past three decades, but its causes are not yet well understood. Here we show that the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) is responsible for the long-term changes in the WPSH through the meridional shift of the subtropical jet, based on comprehensive data analysis and model results. El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is the leading forcing of WPSH variability over interannual timescales, whereas the PDO accounts for its low-frequency variability, resulting in it being independent of ENSO with regard to WPSH variability. The PDO in summer can be interpreted as a coupling with the WPSH. Our results provide useful information for projecting long-term changes in the WPSH.

Project description:Despite numerous studies on marine prokaryotes, the vertical distribution patterns of bacterial community, either on the taxonomic composition or the functional structure, remains relatively unexplored. Using HiSeq-derived 16S rRNA data, the depth-related distribution patterns of taxonomic diversity and functional structure predicted from diversity data in the water column and sediments of the Western Pacific Ocean were explored. The OTU richness declined along the water column after peaking between 100 to 200 m deep. Relative abundance of Cyanobacteria and SAR11 decreased significantly with depth, while Actinobacteria and Gammaproteobacteria increased. This clearly mirrors the vertical distribution pattern of the predicted functional composition with the shift between phototrophic to chemoheterotrophic groups from the surface to the deeper layers. In terms of community composition and functional structure, the epipelagic zone differed from other deeper ones (i.e., meso-, bathy-, and abyssopelagic zones) where no obvious differences were detected. For the epipelagic zone, temperature, dissolved oxygen, and salinity were recognized as the crucial factors shaping both community composition and the functional structure of bacteria. Compared with water samples, benthic sediment samples harbored unexpectedly higher read abundance of Proteobacteria, presenting distinguishable taxonomic and functional compositions. This study provides novel knowledge on the vertical distribution of bacterial taxonomic and functional compositions in the western Pacific.

Project description:While primary productivity in the oligotrophic North Pacific Subtropical Gyre (NPSG) is changing, the micro-size plankton community has not been evaluated in the last 4 decades, prompting a re-evaluation. We collected samples over three years (2016-2018) from depths of 10 to 200 m (n = 127), and the micro-size plankton were identified and counted to understand the heterogeneity of micro-size plankton community structure. The assemblages were consistent to the those of 4 decades ago. Dinophyceae (dinoflagellates) were the most numerically abundant, followed by Cryptophyceae and Bacillariophyceae (diatoms). The other micro-size plankton classes (Cyanophyceae, Haptophyceae, Dictyochophyceae, Euglenophyceae, and Prasinophyceae) were not always detected, whereas only Trichodesmium spp. was counted in the Cyanophyceae. Other unidentified autotrophic and heterotrophic flagellates were also significantly present, and their numeric abundance was higher than or at the same level as was that of the Dinophyceae. In the Dinophyceae, Gymnodiniaceae and Peridiniales were abundant. The chlorophyll a concentration and these class-level assemblages suggested micro-size plankton is not a major primary producer in this area. We applied generalized additive models (GAMs) and principal coordination analyses (PCoAs) to evaluate the habitats of every plankton group and the heterogeneity of the assemblages. The GAMs suggested that every classified plankton abundance showed a similar response to salinity, and we observed differences in habitats in terms of temperature and nitrate concentrations. Based on the PCoAs, we observed unique communities at the 200 m depth layer compared with those at the other sampling layers. The site scores of PCoAs indicated that the micro-size plankton assemblages are most heterogeneous at the 10 m depth layer. At such depth, diazotrophic Cyanophyceae (Trichodesmium spp.) are abundant, particularly in less-saline water. Therefore, nitrogen fixation may contribute to the heterogeneity in the abundance and assemblages in the western NPSG.

Project description:In 2015-2017, we measured activity concentration of radiocesium in the western subtropical gyre of the North Pacific Ocean and revealed the time evolution of radiocesium derived from the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FNPP1) accident between 2011 and 2017. The FNPP1-derived radiocesium deposited on the area south of the Kuroshio/Kuroshio Extension Currents in March 2011 was transported southward and westward through subsurface layers due to subduction of the subtropical mode water. In 2014, the radiocesium in the subsurface layers returned to the north and circulated within the Kuroshio recirculation area. Then in 2015-2017, the radiocesium re-circulated with the area.

Project description:The persistent energy imbalance at the top of the atmosphere, inferred from satellite measurements, indicates that the Earth's climate system continues to accumulate excess heat. As only sparse and irregular measurements of ocean heat below 2000 m depth exist, one of the most challenging questions in global climate change studies is whether the excess heat has already penetrated into the deep ocean. Here we perform a comprehensive analysis of satellite and in situ measurements to report that a significant deep-ocean warming occurred in the subtropical South Pacific Ocean over the past decade (2005-2014). The local accumulation of heat accounted for up to a quarter of the global ocean heat increase, with directly and indirectly inferred deep ocean (below 2000 m) contribution of 2.4 ± 1.4 and 6.1-10.1 ± 4.4%, respectively. We further demonstrate that this heat accumulation is consistent with a decade-long intensification of the subtropical convergence, possibly linked to the persistent La Niña-like state.
