Project description:Mandarin fish Siniperca chuatsi (Basilewsky) (Percichthyidae), as a demersal piscivore, has very specialized feeding habits, for as soon as they start feeding the fry of this fish feed solely on fry of other fish species. In rearing conditions, mandarin fish has been found to accept live prey fish only, and refuse dead prey fish or artificial diets, very little is currently known about the molecular mechanisms of multiple genes which cover different pathways influencing the specialized food habit, such as live prey. We performed transcriptome comparisons between dead prey fish feeders and nonfeeders in mandarin fish. The determination mechanisms of specialized food habit (live prey fish) in mandarin fish could provide some instructions for research of food habit in animals, including mammals.

By feeding conventional and germ-free mice high fat diets with different lipid compositon we aimed to investigate how dietary lipids and the gut microbiota interact to influence inflammation and metabolism in the liver Wild-type C57Bl/6 male mice 11 weeks of age were fed isocaloric diets (45% kcal fat) with either menhaden fish oil (Research Diets, D05122102) or lard (Research Diets, D10011202) for 11 weeks. Liver samples were harvested at the end of the experiment and analyzed by microarray.

Project description:RNA-seq analysis showed that HK L-137 was able to modulate the gene expression of pathways related to molecular function, biological process and cellular component in DI, without compromising fish performance and gut microbiota. Considering these data, our study has shown that HK L-137 can modulate the physiological response of Atlantic salmon, making fish more robust and possibly more able to cope better under stress factors during production.
Project description:We have previously demonstrated that the gut microbiota can play a role in the pathogenesis of conditions associated with exposure to environmental pollutants. It is well accepted that diets high in fermentable fibers such as inulin can beneficially modulate the gut microbiota and lessen the severity of pro-inflammatory diseases. Therefore, we aimed to test the hypothesis that hyperlipidemic mice fed a diet enriched with inulin would be protected from the pro-inflammatory toxic effects of PCB 126.
Project description:Dietary fats have been shown to affect gut microbiota composition and aging gene transcription of middle-aged rats at a normal dose, but little is known about such an effect on gut barrier. In colon, the main component of mucus layer is Muc2, produced by the goblet cells. This study investigated the changes in Muc2 expression, goblet cells proliferation, TLRs and inflammatory cytokines in the colon of middle-aged rats. Proteome technology was applied to explore the possible molecular mechanisms. The results indicated that intake of fish oil at a normal dose downregulated colonic Muc2 expression, and this negative effect of fish oil probably involved the suppression of mucin glycosylation process.
