Project description:This dataset corresponds to a data series produced from automated data loggers during the MESOLAC experimental project. Nine pelagic mesocosms (about 3000 L, 3 m depth) were deployed in July 2019 in Lake Geneva near the shore of Thonon les Bains (France), simulating predicted climate scenarios (i.e. intense weather events) by applying a combination of forcing. The design consisted of three treatments each replicated three times: a control treatment (named C - no treatment applied) and two different treatments simulating different intensities of weather events. The high intensity treatment (named H) aimed to reproduce short and intense weather events such as violent storms. It consisted of a short-term stress applied during the first week, with high pulse of dissolved organic carbon (5x increased concentration, i.e. total DOC ∼ 6 mg L-1), transmitted light reduced to 15% and water column manual mixing. The medium intensity treatment (named M) simulated less intense and more prolonged exposures such as during flood events. It was maintained during the 4 weeks of the experiment and consisted of 1.5x increased concentration of dissolved organic carbon (i.e. total DOC ∼ 2 mg L-1), 70% transmitted light and water column manual mixing. Automated data loggers were placed for the entire period of the experiment in the mesocosms and in the lake for comparison with natural conditions. Temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen and CO2 were monitored every 15 min at different depths (0.15, 0.25, 1 and 2 m). This data set aims to contribute our understanding of the effect of environmental forcing on lake ecosystem processes (such as production, respiration and CO2 exchange) under simulated intense weather events and the ability of the planktonic community to recover after perturbation. To a broader extent, the presented data can be used for a wide variety of applications, including monitoring of lake community functioning during a period of high productivity on a large peri-alpine lake and being included in further meta-analysis aiming at generalising the effect of climate change on large lakes.

Project description:Raised bogs have accumulated more atmospheric carbon than any other terrestrial ecosystem on Earth. Climate-induced expansion of trees and shrubs may turn these ecosystems from net carbon sinks into sources when associated with reduced water tables. Increasing water loss through tree evapotranspiration could potentially deepen water tables, thus stimulating peat decomposition and carbon release. Bridging the gap between modelling and field studies, we conducted a three-year mesocosm experiment subjecting natural bog vegetation to three birch tree densities, and studied the changes in subsurface temperature, water balance components, leaf area index and vegetation composition. We found the deepest water table in mesocosms with low tree density. Mesocosms with high tree density remained wettest (i.e. highest water tables) whereas the control treatment without trees had intermediate water tables. These differences are attributed mostly to differences in evapotranspiration. Although our mesocosm results cannot be directly scaled up to ecosystem level, the systematic effect of tree density suggests that as bogs become colonized by trees, the effect of trees on ecosystem water loss changes with time, with tree transpiration effects of drying becoming increasingly offset by shading effects during the later phases of tree encroachment. These density-dependent effects of trees on water loss have important implications for the structure and functioning of peatbogs.

Project description:Periphyton comprises a broad range of autotrophic and heterotrophic organisms that grow on submerged surfaces in aquatic environments. To investigate the ecological roles of periphyton and their symbiotic bacterial assemblages related to the control of cyanobacterial blooms, mesocosm experiments were performed in a eutrophic lake that is usually infested with harmful cyanobacterial blooms. Our results showed that periphyton, together with their symbionts, reduced Chl-a concentrations (up to 94%), improved water clarity and effectively controlled cyanobacterial blooms in the treatment mesocosm. Planktonic bacterial compositions varied greatly in the pre-bloom/bloom/post-bloom periods in both mesocosms and were mainly influenced by total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) concentrations. The phylum Cyanobacteria was the major component in the water samples until bloom peak, but it was replaced by Actinobacteria in the post-bloom period. However, periphyton niches were dominated by Alphaproteobacteria throughout the experiments, Cyanobacteria proportion being lower. Overall, the results indicated that periphyton and their unique bacterial partners could effectively compete with cyanobacteria and improve water quality. Their underlying interaction mechanism was also suggested to explain how periphyton and their symbionts can reduce cyanobacterial blooms in eutrophic water.

Project description:We describe a completely randomizable flow-through outdoor mesocosm for climate change and ecotoxicology studies that was built with inexpensive materials. The 16 raceway tanks allow up to 6× water renewal per hour, avoiding changes in natural abiotic seawater conditions. We use an open-source hardware board (Arduino) that was adapted to control heaters and an innovative CO 2 injection system. This system reduced seawater pH up to -0.9 units and increased temperature up to +6°C in three treatments and a control. Treatments can be continuously compared with the control and vary according to diel fluctuations, thus following the diel range observed in the sea. The mesocosm facility also includes an integrated secondary system of 48 aquaria for ecotoxicology studies. We validated the reproducibility and relevance of our experimental system by analyzing the variation of the total DNA of the microbial community extracted from corals in three elevated temperature scenarios during a 40-day experiment. We also present data from temperature, acidification, and copper contamination trials, which allowed continuous, reliable, and consistent treatment manipulations.

Project description:This dataset complement a previously published dataset [1] and corresponds to the physico-chemical parameters data series produced during the MESOLAC experimental project [2]. The presented dataset is composed of: 1. In situ profiles (0-3m) of temperature, conductivity, pH, dissolved oxygen (concentration and saturation). 2. In situ measurements of light spectral UV/VIS/IR irradiance (300-950 nm wavelength range) taken at 0, 0.25, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2 and 2.5m. 3. Laboratory chemical analysis of samples collected at 0 and 2 m (conductivity, pH, total alkalinity, NH4, NO2, NO3, total and particulate nitrogen (Ntot, Npart), PO4, total and particulate phosphorus (Ptot, Ppart), total, organic particulate and total particulate carbon (Ctot, Cpart-org, Cpart-tot), Cl, SO4, SiO2. 4. Laboratory analysis of pigments extracted from samples collected at 0 and 2 m (Chla, Chlc, carotenoids, phaeopigments). The experimental design is the same as in Tran-Khac et al [1]. Briefly, it consisted of nine pelagic mesocosms (about 3000 L, 3m depth) deployed in July 2019 in Lake Geneva near the shore of Thonon les Bains (France) aiming to simulate predicted climate scenarios (i.e. extreme events) and assess the response of planktonic communities, ecosystem functioning and resilience. These data are presented in the dataset file, ordered by sampling event (numbered from S1 to S8), treatment (Control-C, High-H and Medium-M) and replicates (1 to 3). For each sampling point the measured parameters are listed in columns, missing data and values below the detection limit are marked as NA (not available). This data set aims to contribute to the understanding of the effect of environmental forcing on lake physico-chemical characteristics (such as temperature, oxygen and nutrient concentration) under simulated intense weather events. To a broader extent, the presented data can be used for a wide variety of applications, including monitoring of a large peri-alpine lake functioning under environmental stress and being included in further meta-analysis to generalise the effect of climate change on large lakes. The two complementary dataset differ in the acquired data and methods, temporal and spatial resolution. They complete each other in terms of physico-chemical characterization of the experimental treatments and together can allow comparison of the two different monitoring strategies (continuous vs punctual) during in situ experimental manipulations.

Project description:Twenty-four samplings were conducted every 3 months at 15 sites from January 2009 to October 2014 in Lake Poyang, and 20 parameters were analyzed and classified into three groups (toxic metals, easily treated parameters, and others). The assessment results based on water quality index (WQI) showed that the water quality in Lake Poyang was generally "moderate", according to the classification of the surface water quality standard (GB3838-2002) in China, but a deteriorating trend was observed at the interannual scale. Seasonally, the water quality was best in summer and worst in winter. Easily treated parameters generally determined the WQI value in the assessment, especially total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP), while toxic metals and other parameters in Lake Poyang were generally at low and safe levels for drinking water. Water level (WL) has a net positive effect on water quality in Lake Poyang through dilution of environmental parameters, which in practice means TN. Consequently, local management agencies should pay more attention to nutrient concentrations during the monitoring schedule, as well as during the low-water periods which manifest a relatively bad water quality state, especially with the prevailing low WL observed recently in Lake Poyang.

Project description:Warming across the globe is expected to alter the strength and amount of regional precipitation, but there is uncertainty associated with the magnitude of these expected changes, and also how these changes in temperature and the hydrologic cycle will affect humans. For example, the climate in central-south Chile is projected to become significantly warmer and drier over the next several decades in response to anthropogenically driven warming, but these anthropogenic changes are superimposed on natural climate variability. The stable isotope composition of meteoric water provides significant information regarding the moisture source, pathways, and rain-out history of an air mass, but precipitation samples suitable for stable isotope measurements require long-term placement of field equipment making them difficult to obtain. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Global Network of Isotopes in Precipitation (GNIP) stations generate isotopic and ancillary data of precipitation from many locations around the world, but remote areas of developing countries like Chile typically have sparse networks of meteorological stations, which inhibit our ability to accurately model regional precipitation. Central-south Chile, in particular, has a sparse network of GNIP stations and, as a result, the isotopic composition of meteoric water is underrepresented in the global database complicating efforts to constrain modern day hydroclimate variability as well as paleohydrologic reconstruction for southern South America. In this study, we measured the stable isotope compositions of hydrogen (δ2H) and oxygen (δ18O) in surface lacustrine waters of central-south Chile to determine what physical and/or climatic features are the dominant controls on lacustrine δ18O and δ2H composition, assess whether or not the isotopic composition of the lakes record time-averaged isotope composition of meteoric water, and determine whether an isoscape map based on lake surface waters could predict the H and O isotope compositions of precipitation at the few GNIP stations in the region.

Project description:Small lakes have lower water levels during dry years as was the case in 2000-2020. We sought to show the biodiversity of plant communities at various water levels in Lake Arakhley. Changes in moisture content are reflected in the cyclical variations of the water level in the lake, which decreased approximately 2 m in 2017-2018. These variations affect the biological diversity of the aquatic ecosystems. We present the latest data on the state of the plant communities in this mesotrophic lake located in the drainage basin of Lake Baikal. Lake Arakhley is a freshwater lake with low mineral content and a sodium hydrocarbonate chemical composition. Changes in the nutrient concentration were related to precipitation; inflow volume and organic matter were autochtonous at low water levels. The most diverse groups of phytoplankton found in the lake were Bacillariophyta, Chlorophyta, and Chrysophyta. High biodiversity values indicate the complexity and richness of the lake's phytoplankton community. A prevalence of Lindavia comta was observed when water levels were low and Asterionella formosa dominated in high-water years. The maximum growth depth of lacustrine vegetation decreased from 11.0 m to 4.0 m from 1967 to 2018. Decreasing water levels were accompanied by a reduction in the littoral zone, altering the communities of aquatic plants. The hydrophyte communities were monodominant in the dry years and were represented by Ceratophyllum demersum. The vegetation cover of the lake was more diverse in high-water years and variations in the lake's water content altered the composition of biogenic substances. These changes were reflected in the lake's phytocenosis.

Project description:We employed culture-dependent and -independent techniques to study microbial diversity in Lake Chaka, a unique hypersaline lake (32.5% salinity) in northwest China. It is situated at 3,214 m above sea level in a dry climate. The average water depth is 2 to 3 cm. Halophilic isolates were obtained from the lake water, and halotolerant isolates were obtained from the shallow sediment. The isolates exhibited resistance to UV and gamma radiation. Microbial abundance in the sediments ranged from 10(8) cells/g at the water-sediment interface to 10(7) cells/g at a sediment depth of 42 cm. A major change in the bacterial community composition was observed across the interface. In the lake water, clone sequences affiliated with the Bacteroidetes were the most abundant, whereas in the sediments, sequences related to low G+C gram-positive bacteria were predominant. A similar change was also present in the archaeal community. While all archaeal clone sequences in the lake water belonged to the Halobacteriales, the majority of the sequences in the sediments were related to those previously obtained from methanogenic soils and sediments. The observed changes in the microbial community structure across the water-sediment interface were correlated with a decrease in salinity from the lake water (32.5%) to the sediments (approximately 4%). Across the interface, the redox state also changed from oxic to anoxic and may also have contributed to the observed shift in the microbial community.
