Nitrate Stress in Desulfovibrio vulgaris Hildenborough

ABSTRACT: Using data from microarray experiments, we investigated the effects of excess sodium nitrate on Desulfovibrio vulgaris. Keywords: stress response, time course Comparison of cells treated with 105 mM sodium nitrate to untreated cells at times of 0, 30, 60, 120, and 240 min.

Sulfate-reducing bacteria have been extensively studied for their potential in heavy-metal bioremediation. However, the occurrence of elevated nitrate in contaminated environments has been shown to inhibit sulfate reduction activity. Although the inhibition has been suggested to result from the competition with nitrate-reducing bacteria, the possibility of direct inhibition of sulfate reducers by elevated nitrate needs to be explored. Using Desulfovibrio vulgaris as a model sulfate-reducing bact  ...[more]
