DNA methylation analysis of the autistic brain reveals dysregulated biological pathways

ABSTRACT: Genome wide DNA methylation profiling of post-mortem human brain samples from both autistic individuals and nonautistic individuals. Samples of the frontal cortex (BA10) and cingulate cortex (BA24) were examined from each individual. Bisulphite converted DNA from the 45 samples were hybridised to the Illumina Infinium 450k Human Methylation Beadchip

ORGANISM(S): Homo sapiens

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are a group of neurodevelopmental conditions characterized by dysfunction in social interaction, communication and stereotypic behavior. Genetic and environmental factors have been implicated in the development of ASD, but the molecular mechanisms underlying their interaction are not clear. Epigenetic modifications have been suggested as molecular mechanism that can mediate the interaction between the environment and the genome to produce adaptive or maladaptive b  ...[more]
