Transcription profiling of human muscle biopises after standard diet and activity regimes

ABSTRACT: Muscle biopsies taken from vastus lateralis muscle of 15 men and 15 women after 3 days of standardized diet and activity to examine effects of sex and age; Subjects were either young adults (7 men and 7 women, 20-29 yr old) or older (8 men and 8 women, 65-75 yr old); Affymetrix U133A and U133B arrays were scanned both before (S1) and after (S2) antibody enhancement. This file has U133A S1 data. Effects of age were computed for men and women separately with an alternative method previously and data submitted as GSE362 (men) and GSE674 (women). Experiment Overall Design: Gene expressions profiles were generated for each individual for a total of 30 profiles (15 male, 15 female, 14 younger, 16 older)

ORGANISM(S): Homo sapiens

There is sexual dimorphism of skeletal muscle, the most obvious feature being the larger muscle mass of men. The molecular basis for this difference has not been clearly defined. To identify genes that might contribute to the relatively greater muscularity of men, we compared skeletal muscle gene expression profiles of 15 normal men and 15 normal women by using comprehensive oligonucleotide microarrays. Although there were sex-related differences in expression of several hundred genes, very few  ...[more]
