Transcription profiling by array of Streptococcus agalactiae strain 2603 V/R and isogenic Delta_csrRS mutant grown in the presence or in the absence of glucose

ABSTRACT: Comparative global gene expression analysis of the 2603 V/R Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B streptococcus, GBS) strain grown in a medium devoid of sugars versus bacteria incubated for 30 min in 55 mM glucose medium. To investigate whether glucose-dependent regulation of gene expression was modulated by the CsrRS system, we also compared transcriptome analysis of an isogenic Delta_csrRS mutant and of the wild type strain incubated in a glucose-rich medium.

Although the contribution of carbohydrate catabolism to bacterial colonization and infection is well recognized, the transcriptional changes during these processes are still unknown. In this study, we have performed comparative global gene expression analysis of GBS in sugar-free versus high glucose milieu. The analysis revealed a differential expression of genes involved in metabolism, transport and host-pathogen interaction. Many of them appeared to be among the genes previously reported to be  ...[more]
