Transcriptional profiling of ovarian cancer samples with different grades

ABSTRACT: We have previously demonstrated (Calura E et al., 2013) that different epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) histotypes have different, defined characteristics at the microRNA level, which might highlight a different originating tissue for the disease. From these results we have invesigated whole-genome gene expression on a cohort of samples with different FIGO grades, in order to investigate the link between the tumor grade and gene expression.

The production rate of gene expression data is nothing less than astounding. However, with the benefit of hindsight we can assert that, since we completely ignored the non-coding part of the transcriptome, we spent the last decade to study cell mechanisms having few data in our hands. In this scenario, microRNAs, which are key post-trascriptional regulators, deserve special attention. Given the state of knowledge about their biogenesis, mechanisms of action and the numerous experimentally valida  ...[more]
