THz induced giant spin and valley currents.

ABSTRACT: Spin and valley indices represent the key quantum labels of quasi-particles in a wide class of two-dimensional materials and form the foundational elements of the fields of spintronics and valleytronics. Control over these degrees of freedom, therefore, remains the central challenge in these fields. Here, we show that femtosecond laser light combining optical frequency circularly polarized pulse and a terahertz (THz) frequency linearly polarized pulse, a so-called "hencomb" pulse, can generate precisely tailored and 90% pure spin currents for the dichalcogenide WSe₂ and >75% pure valley currents for bilayer graphene with gaps greater than 120 millielectron volts (dephasing time, 20 femtoseconds). The frequency of the circular light component and the polarization vector of the THz light component are shown to represent the key control parameters of these pulses. Our results thus open a route toward light control over spin/valley current states at ultrafast times.

Spin valley and giant quantum spin Hall gap of hydrofluorinated bismuth nanosheet.

Project description:Spin-valley and electronic band topological properties have been extensively explored in quantum material science, yet their coexistence has rarely been realized in stoichiometric two-dimensional (2D) materials. We theoretically predict the quantum spin Hall effect (QSHE) in the hydrofluorinated bismuth (Bi2HF) nanosheet where the hydrogen (H) and fluorine (F) atoms are functionalized on opposite sides of bismuth (Bi) atomic monolayer. Such Bi2HF nanosheet is found to be a 2D topological insulator with a giant band gap of 0.97 eV which might host room temperature QSHE. The atomistic structure of Bi2HF nanosheet is noncentrosymmetric and the spontaneous polarization arises from the hydrofluorinated morphology. The phonon spectrum and ab initio molecular dynamic (AIMD) calculations reveal that the proposed Bi2HF nanosheet is dynamically and thermally stable. The inversion symmetry breaking together with spin-orbit coupling (SOC) leads to the coupling between spin and valley in Bi2HF nanosheet. The emerging valley-dependent properties and the interplay between intrinsic dipole and SOC are investigated using first-principles calculations combined with an effective Hamiltonian model. The topological invariant of the Bi2HF nanosheet is confirmed by using Wilson loop method and the calculated helical metallic edge states are shown to host QSHE. The Bi2HF nanosheet is therefore a promising platform to realize room temperature QSHE and valley spintronics.

Ultrasmall and Monolayered Tungsten Dichalcogenide Quantum Dots with Giant Spin-Valley Coupling and Purple Luminescence.

Project description:Monolayered tungsten dichalcogenide quantum dots (WS2 QDs) have various potential applications due to their large spin-valley coupling and excellent photoluminescence (PL) properties. What is expected is that with the decrease in lateral size of QDs, the stronger quantum confinement effect will dramatically strengthen the spin-valley coupling and widen the band gap. However, ultrasmall monolayered WS2 QDs prepared by ion intercalation unavoidably undergo the problem of structural defects, which will create defect levels and significantly change their properties. In this study, we report that by annealing defective monolayered WS2 QDs in sulfur vapor, pristine monolayered WS2 QDs with an ultrasmall lateral size of ca. 1.8-3.8 nm can be obtained. The results show that the ultrasmall monolayered WS2 QDs exhibit a giant spin-valley coupling of ca. 821 meV. Moreover, the pristine ultrasmall monolayered WS2 QDs show purple PL centered at 416 nm, and the defect PL peaks in defective WS2 QDs can be effectively removed by annealing. All of these results afford the ultrasmall monolayered QDs various applications such as in optoelectronics, spintronics, valleytronics, and so on.

Spin polarization detection via chirality-induced tunnelling currents in indium selenide.

Project description:Chirality, a basic property of symmetry breaking, is crucial for fields such as biology and physics. Recent advances in the study of chiral systems have stimulated interest in the discovery of symmetry-breaking states that enable exotic phenomena such as spontaneous gyrotropic order and superconductivity. Here we examine the interaction between light chirality and electron spins in indium selenide and study the effect of magnetic field on emerging tunnelling photocurrents at the Van Hove singularity. Although the effect is symmetric under linearly polarized light excitation, a non-symmetric signal emerges when the excitation is circularly polarized, making it possible to electrically detect light's chirality. Our study shows a negligible out-of-plane g-factor for few-layer indium selenide at the valence band edge, resulting in an unbalanced Zeeman splitting in hexagonal boron nitride spin bands. This finding allows us to measure the change in energy barrier height with exceptional resolution (~15 μeV). Furthermore, we confirm the long-standing theoretical prediction of spin-polarized hole accumulation in the flat valence band at increasing laser powers.

Spin-neutral currents for spintronics.

Project description:Electric currents carrying a net spin polarization are widely used in spintronics, whereas globally spin-neutral currents are expected to play no role in spin-dependent phenomena. Here we show that, in contrast to this common expectation, spin-independent conductance in compensated antiferromagnets and normal metals can be efficiently exploited in spintronics, provided their magnetic space group symmetry supports a non-spin-degenerate Fermi surface. Due to their momentum-dependent spin polarization, such antiferromagnets can be used as active elements in antiferromagnetic tunnel junctions (AFMTJs) and produce a giant tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) effect. Using RuO2 as a representative compensated antiferromagnet exhibiting spin-independent conductance along the [001] direction but a non-spin-degenerate Fermi surface, we design a RuO2/TiO2/RuO2 (001) AFMTJ, where a globally spin-neutral charge current is controlled by the relative orientation of the Néel vectors of the two RuO2 electrodes, resulting in the TMR effect as large as ~500%. These results are expanded to normal metals which can be used as a counter electrode in AFMTJs with a single antiferromagnetic layer or other elements in spintronic devices. Our work uncovers an unexplored potential of the materials with no global spin polarization for utilizing them in spintronics.

Spin Hall voltages from a.c. and d.c. spin currents.

Project description:In spin electronics, the spin degree of freedom is used to transmit and store information. To this end the ability to create pure spin currents--that is, without net charge transfer--is essential. When the magnetization vector in a ferromagnet-normal metal junction is excited, the spin pumping effect leads to the injection of pure spin currents into the normal metal. The polarization of this spin current is time-dependent and contains a very small d.c. component. Here we show that the large a.c. component of the spin currents can be detected efficiently using the inverse spin Hall effect. The observed a.c.-inverse spin Hall voltages are one order of magnitude larger than the conventional d.c.-inverse spin Hall voltages measured on the same device. Our results demonstrate that ferromagnet-normal metal junctions are efficient sources of pure spin currents in the gigahertz frequency range.

Generation of megahertz-band spin currents using nonlinear spin pumping.

Project description:Spin pumping enables the generation of d.c. and gigahertz-band (GHz-band) voltages from an applied microwave via magnetization dynamics when combined with inverse spin Hall effects. However, generating such voltages in the in-between frequency region, or the megahertz (MHz) band, has been difficult since ferromagnetic resonance usually occurs in the GHz band. Here we show that in spite of GHz-band microwaves applied, MHz-band voltages can be generated by spin pumping with use of nonlinear magnetization dynamics in Y3Fe5O12. The mechanism is ascribed to the MHz-band oscillation of the amplitude of the magnetization precession, which is projected onto a rectified voltage component via spin pumping. The present finding could be useful for frequency down-conversion thanks to the simple and durable structure, continuous-wave operation, and the tunability of an output frequency with low magnetic fields.

Excitation of coherent propagating spin waves by pure spin currents.

Project description:Utilization of pure spin currents not accompanied by the flow of electrical charge provides unprecedented opportunities for the emerging technologies based on the electron's spin degree of freedom, such as spintronics and magnonics. It was recently shown that pure spin currents can be used to excite coherent magnetization dynamics in magnetic nanostructures. However, because of the intrinsic nonlinear self-localization effects, magnetic auto-oscillations in the demonstrated devices were spatially confined, preventing their applications as sources of propagating spin waves in magnonic circuits using these waves as signal carriers. Here, we experimentally demonstrate efficient excitation and directional propagation of coherent spin waves generated by pure spin current. We show that this can be achieved by using the nonlocal spin injection mechanism, which enables flexible design of magnetic nanosystems and allows one to efficiently control their dynamic characteristics.

Dynamical amplification of magnetoresistances and Hall currents up to the THz regime.

Project description:Spin-orbit-related effects offer a highly promising route for reading and writing information in magnetic units of future devices. These phenomena rely not only on the static magnetization orientation but also on its dynamics to achieve fast switchings that can reach the THz range. In this work, we consider Co/Pt and Fe/W bilayers to show that accounting for the phase difference between different processes is crucial to the correct description of the dynamical currents. By tuning each system towards its ferromagnetic resonance, we reveal that dynamical spin Hall angles can non-trivially change sign and be boosted by over 500%, reaching giant values. We demonstrate that charge and spin pumping mechanisms can greatly magnify or dwindle the currents flowing through the system, influencing all kinds of magnetoresistive and Hall effects, thus impacting also dc and second harmonic experimental measurements.

Giant optical polarisation rotations induced by a single quantum dot spin.

Project description:In the framework of optical quantum computing and communications, a major objective consists in building receiving nodes implementing conditional operations on incoming photons, using a single stationary qubit. In particular, the quest for scalable nodes motivated the development of cavity-enhanced spin-photon interfaces with solid-state emitters. An important challenge remains, however, to produce a stable, controllable, spin-dependent photon state, in a deterministic way. Here we use an electrically-contacted pillar-based cavity, embedding a single InGaAs quantum dot, to demonstrate giant polarisation rotations induced on reflected photons by a single electron spin. A complete tomography approach is introduced to extrapolate the output polarisation Stokes vector, conditioned by a specific spin state, in presence of spin and charge fluctuations. We experimentally approach polarisation states conditionally rotated by [Formula: see text], π, and [Formula: see text] in the Poincaré sphere with extrapolated fidelities of (97 ± 1) %, (84 ± 7) %, and (90 ± 8) %, respectively. We find that an enhanced light-matter coupling, together with limited cavity birefringence and reduced spectral fluctuations, allow targeting most conditional rotations in the Poincaré sphere, with a control both in longitude and latitude. Such polarisation control may prove crucial to adapt spin-photon interfaces to various configurations and protocols for quantum information.

Ising superconductivity induced from spin-selective valley symmetry breaking in twisted trilayer graphene.

Project description:We show that the e-e interaction induces a strong breakdown of valley symmetry for each spin channel in twisted trilayer graphene, leading to a ground state where the two spin projections have opposite sign of the valley symmetry breaking order parameter. This leads to a spin-valley locking in which the electrons of a Cooper pair are forced to live on different Fermi lines attached to opposite valleys. Furthermore, we find an effective intrinsic spin-orbit coupling explaining the protection of the superconductivity against in-plane magnetic fields. The effect of spin-selective valley symmetry breaking is validated as it reproduces the experimental observation of the reset of the Hall density at 2-hole doping. It also implies a breakdown of the symmetry of the bands from C6 to C3, with an enhancement of the anisotropy of the Fermi lines which is at the origin of a Kohn-Luttinger (pairing) instability. The isotropy of the bands is gradually recovered, however, when the Fermi level approaches the bottom of the second valence band, explaining why the superconductivity fades away in the doping range beyond 3 holes per moiré unit cell in twisted trilayer graphene.
