Electrical and Optical Properties of γ-SnSe: A New Ultra-narrow Band Gap Material.

ABSTRACT: We describe the unusual properties of γ-SnSe, a new orthorhombic binary phase in the tin monoselenide system. This phase exhibits an ultranarrow band gap under standard pressure and temperature conditions, leading to high conductivity under ambient conditions. Density functional calculations identified the similarity and difference between the new γ-SnSe phase and the conventional α-SnSe based on the electron localization function. Very good agreement was obtained for the band gap width between the band structure calculations and the experiment, and insight provided for the mechanism of reduction in the band gap. The unique properties of this material may render it useful for applications such as thermal imaging devices and solar cells.

Efficient Selective Sorting of Semiconducting Carbon Nanotubes Using Ultra-Narrow-Band-Gap Polymers.

Project description:Conjugated polymers with narrow band gaps are particularly useful for sorting and discriminating semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (s-SWCNT) due to the low charge carrier injection barrier for transport. In this paper, we report two newly synthesized narrow-band-gap conjugated polymers (PNDITEG-TVT and PNDIC8TEG-TVT) based on naphthalene diimide (NDI) and thienylennevinylene (TVT) building blocks, decorated with different polar side chains that can be used for dispersing and discriminating s-SWCNT. Compared with the mid-band-gap conjugated polymer PNDITEG-AH, which is composed of naphthalene diimide (NDI) and head-to-head bithiophene building blocks, the addition of a vinylene linker eliminates the steric congestion present in head-to-head bithiophene, which promotes backbone planarity, extending the π-conjugation length and narrowing the band gap. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that inserting a vinylene group in a head-to-head bithiophene efficiently lifts the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) level (-5.60 eV for PNDITEG-AH, -5.02 eV for PNDITEG-TVT, and -5.09 eV for PNDIC8TEG-TVT). All three polymers are able to select for s-SWCNT, as evidenced by the sharp transitions in the absorption spectra. Field-effect transistors (FETs) fabricated with the polymer:SWCNT inks display p-dominant properties, with higher hole mobilities when using the NDI-TVT polymers as compared with PNDITEG-AH (0.6 cm2 V-1 s-1 for HiPCO:PNDITEG-AH, 1.5 cm2 V-1 s-1 for HiPCO:PNDITEG-TVT, and 2.3 cm2 V-1 s-1 for HiPCO:PNDIC8TEG-TVT). This improvement is due to the better alignment of the HOMO level of PNDITEG-TVT and PNDIC8TEG-TVT with that of the dominant SWCNT specie.

Band Structure Extraction at Hybrid Narrow-Gap Semiconductor-Metal Interfaces.

Project description:The design of epitaxial semiconductor-superconductor and semiconductor-metal quantum devices requires a detailed understanding of the interfacial electronic band structure. However, the band alignment of buried interfaces is difficult to predict theoretically and to measure experimentally. This work presents a procedure that allows to reliably determine critical parameters for engineering quantum devices; band offset, band bending profile, and number of occupied quantum well subbands of interfacial accumulation layers at semiconductor-metal interfaces. Soft X-ray angle-resolved photoemission is used to directly measure the quantum well states as well as valence bands and core levels for the InAs(100)/Al interface, an important platform for Majorana-zero-mode based topological qubits, and demonstrate that the fabrication process strongly influences the band offset, which in turn controls the topological phase diagrams. Since the method is transferable to other narrow gap semiconductors, it can be used more generally for engineering semiconductor-metal and semiconductor-superconductor interfaces in gate-tunable superconducting devices.

Nitridophosphate-Based Ultra-Narrow-Band Blue-Emitters: Luminescence Properties of AEP8 N14 :Eu2+ (AE=Ca, Sr, Ba).

Project description:The nitridophosphates AEP8 N14 (AE=Ca, Sr, Ba) were synthesized at 4-5 GPa and 1050-1150 °C applying a 1000 t press with multianvil apparatus, following the azide route. The crystal structures of CaP8 N14 and SrP8 N14 are isotypic. The space group Cmcm was confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction. The structure of BaP8 N14 (space group Amm2) was elucidated by a combination of transmission electron microscopy and diffraction of microfocused synchrotron radiation. Phase purity was confirmed by Rietveld refinement. IR spectra are consistent with the structure models and the chemical compositions were confirmed by X-ray spectroscopy. Luminescence properties of Eu2+ -doped samples were investigated upon excitation with UV to blue light. CaP8 N14 (λem =470 nm; fwhm=1380 cm-1 ) and SrP8 N14 (λem =440 nm; fwhm=1350 cm-1 ) can be classified as the first ultra-narrow-band blue-emitting Eu2+ -doped nitridophosphates. BaP8 N14 shows a notably broader blue emission (λem =417/457 nm; fwhm=2075/3550 cm-1 ).

Exploring nanoarchitectonics and optical properties of PAA-ZnO@BCP wide-band-gap organic semiconductors.

Project description:This work reports the formation of polyacrylic acid (PAA)-zinc oxide (ZnO)-bromocresol purple (BCP), (PAA-ZnO@ (0.00-0.01) BCP wide-bandgap organic semiconductors deposited onto glass substrates via a sol-gel polymerization process. These semiconductor films were deposited on glass substrates using a spin coating and then dried at 60 °C. The PAA-ZnO film appeared to be of amorphous phase, and films loaded with BCP revealed semicrystalline behavior. The surface of the films exhibited adherence and extended grains. The hydrogen bonds formed between PAA-ZnO and the BCP dye within the PAA-ZnO@BCP films was performed using FTIR-spectroscopy. The prepared nanocomposites demonstrate an indirect band transition which is affected slightly by adding ZnO and BCP dye. Optical parameters such as the absorption coefficient, the refractive index, the dielectric constant, optical conductivity, optical depth, and optical electronegativity of the prepared nanocomposites were studied as functions of incident light energy (wavelength). The PAA carbonyl group n-π* transition and BCP aromatic ring π-π* transitions were detected at about 285 (for all samples) and 432 nm (for BCP loaded samples), respectively. The superior photoluminescence characteristics observed in the BCP/PAA-Zn films excited with a wavelength of 250 nm indicated the successful loading of the BCP dye during the self-aggregation of the PAA-Zn film.

Electrical Transport and Thermoelectric Properties of SnSe-SnTe Solid Solution.

Project description:SnSe is considered as a promising thermoelectric (TE) material since the discovery of the record figure of merit (ZT) of 2.6 at 926 K in single crystal SnSe. It is, however, difficult to use single crystal SnSe for practical applications due to the poor mechanical properties and the difficulty and cost of fabricating a single crystal. It is highly desirable to improve the properties of polycrystalline SnSe whose TE properties are still not near to that of single crystal SnSe. In this study, in order to control the TE properties of polycrystalline SnSe, polycrystalline SnSe-SnTe solid solutions were fabricated, and the effect of the solid solution on the electrical transport and TE properties was investigated. The SnSe1-xTex samples were fabricated using mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses revealed that the solubility limit of Te in SnSe1-xTex is somewhere between x = 0.3 and 0.5. With increasing Te content, the electrical conductivity was increased due to the increase of carrier concentration, while the lattice thermal conductivity was suppressed by the increased amount of phonon scattering. The change of carrier concentration and electrical conductivity is explained using the measured band gap energy and the calculated band structure. The change of thermal conductivity is explained using the change of lattice thermal conductivity from the increased amount of phonon scattering at the point defect sites. A ZT of ~0.78 was obtained at 823 K from SnSe0.7Te0.3, which is an ~11% improvement compared to that of SnSe.

Ultra-wide-angle multispectral narrow-band absorber for infrared spectral reconstruction.

Project description:This paper presents the design of an ultra-wide-angle multispectral narrow-band absorber for reconstructing infrared spectra. The absorber offers several advantages, including polarization sensitivity, robustness against structural wear, wide azimuthal angle coverage, high narrow-band absorption, and adjustable working wavelength. To accomplish infrared spectrum reconstruction, an absorber is employed as a spectral sampling channel, eliminating the influence of slits or complex optical splitting elements in spectral imaging technology. Additionally, we propose using a truncation regularization algorithm based on the design matrix singular value ratio, namely IReg, which can enable high-precision spectral reconstruction under largely disturbed environments. The results demonstrate that, even when the number of absorption spectrum curve is reduced to a range of 1/2 to 1/3, high-precision spectral reconstruction is achievable for both flat and high-energy steep mid- and long-infrared spectral targets, while effectively accomplishing data dimension reduction.

Synthesis of Reactive Water-Soluble Narrow-Band-Gap Polymers for Post-Crosslinking.

Project description:In this study, water-soluble, narrow-band-gap polymers containing reactive groups were prepared by the addition-condensation of pyrrole (Pyr), benzaldehyde-2-sulfonic acid sodium salt (BS), and terephthalaldehydic acid (TPA) or p-hydroxybenzaldehyde (p-HB). TPA and p-HB were used for the post-crosslinking reaction between polymers. The polymers were characterized by employing various analyses such as 1H-NMR, thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and UV-Vis-NIR. The Eg values of polymers estimated from the absorption edges were 0.55 and 0.62 eV. The post-crosslinking reaction is important for preventing resolubilization and for developing an electron conducting route between the polymer chains. Herein, the post-crosslinked polymer was observed to maintain its narrow-band-gap and conductivity was increased 46 times compared to that observed before crosslinking.

Towards Perfect Ultra-Broadband Absorbers, Ultra-Narrow Waveguides, and Ultra-Small Cavities at Optical Frequencies.

Project description:In this study, we design ultra-broadband optical absorbers, ultra-narrow optical waveguides, and ultra-small optical cavities comprising two-dimensional metallic photonic crystals that tolerate fabrication imperfections such as position and radius disorderings. The absorbers containing gold rods show an absorption amplitude of more than 90% under 54% position disordering at 200<λ<530 nm. The absorbers containing silver rods show an absorptance of more than 90% under 54% position disordering at 200<λ<400 nm. B-type straight waveguides that contain four rows of silver rods exposed to air reveal normalized transmittances of 75% and 76% under 32% position and 60% radius disorderings, respectively. B-type L-shaped waveguides containing four rows of silver rods show 76% and 90% normalized transmittances under 32% position and 40% radius disorderings, respectively. B-type cavities containing two rings of silver rods reveal 70% and 80% normalized quality factors under 32% position and 60% radius disorderings, respectively.

Narrow-band UVB phototherapy for psoriasis

Project description:Psoriasis is a common chronic inflammatory and hyperproliferative immune-mediated skin disorder. Narrow-band UVB (NB-UVB) phototherapy is a convenient first-line treatment of psoriasis, though the mechanisms underlying its efficacy have not been completely elucidated. In order to improve our understanding of NB-UVB phototherapy, gene expression profiling was used to characterize gene expression in lesional epidermis from psoriasis patients undergoing NB-UVB phototherapy. Increased expression of melanogenesis pathway genes was observed to be the earliest response. At the end of treatment, genes involved in diverse biological processes were affected, such as pigmentation, cell adhesion, ectodermal development and metabolism. The relationship between gene expression and treatment outcome was further studied using Partial Least Squares Discriminant Analysis (PLS-DA). Gene ontology analysis showed that genes responding to phototherapy and highly correlated to treatment outcome were involved in oxidation reduction, growth and mitochondria organization. In particular SPATA18, a key regulator of mitochondria quality, was found to be significantly downregulated in psoriasis, and its upregulation following phototherapy was required for optimal clinical improvement. Our data suggest that oxidation reduction is a critical event for the resolution of psoriatic plaques.

Band Gap Engineering of Hexagonal SnSe<sub>2</sub> Nanostructured Thin Films for Infra-Red Photodetection.

Project description:We, for the first time, provide the experimental demonstration on the band gap engineering of layered hexagonal SnSe2 nanostructured thin films by varying the thickness. For 50 nm thick film, the band gap is ~2.04 eV similar to that of monolayer, whereas the band gap is approximately ~1.2 eV similar to that of bulk for the 1200 nm thick film. The variation of the band gap is consistent with the the theoretically predicted layer-dependent band gap of SnSe2. Interestingly, the 400-1200 nm thick films were sensitiveto 1064 nm laser iradiation and the sensitivity increases almost exponentiallly with thickness, while films with 50-140 nm thick are insensitive which is due to the fact that the band gap of thinner films is greater than the energy corresponding to 1064 nm. Over all, our results establish the possibility of engineering the band gap of SnSe2 layered structures by simply controlling the thickness of the film to absorb a wide range of electromagnetic radiation from infra-red to visible range.
