Project description:Photocatalytic technology aiming to eliminate organic pollutants in water has been rapidly developed. In this work, we successfully synthesized CuWO4/ZnO photocatalysts with different weight ratios of CuWO4 through facile hydrothermal treatment. Crystal structures, forms, and optical properties of these as-prepared materials were investigated and analyzed. 3% CuWO4/ZnO showed the optimum photodegradation efficiency toward methylene blue under the irradiation of simulated sunlight for 120 min, the degradation rate of which was 98.9%. The pseudo-first-order rate constant of 3% CuWO4/ZnO was ∼11.3 and ∼3.5 times bigger than that of pristine CuWO4 and ZnO, respectively. Furthermore, the material exhibited high stability and reusability after five consecutive photocatalytic tests. In addition, free radical capture experiments were conducted and the possible mechanism proposed explained that the synergistic effect between CuWO4 and ZnO accelerates the photodegradation reaction. This work provides a feasible technical background for the efficient and sustainable utilization of photocatalysts in wastewater control.

Project description:This work presents our study results of the magnetization of multilayer UV-reduced graphene oxide (UV-rGO), polymer matrix (polystyrene), and a conjugated composite based on them. The mesoscopic structure of the composites synthesized in this work was studied by such methods as X-ray diffraction, SEM, as well as NMR-, IR- and Raman spectroscopy. The magnetization of the composites under investigation and their components was measured using a vibrating-sample magnetometer. It has been shown that the UV-reduction process leads to the formation of many submicron holes distributed inside rGO flakes, which can create edge defects, causing possibly magnetic order in the graphite samples under investigation on the mesoscopic level. This article provides an alternative explanation for the ferromagnetic hysteresis loop in UV-rGO on the base of superconductivity type-II.

Project description:Carbon fiber-reinforced titanium matrix composites were prepared by powder metallurgy. Carbon fiber (CF) powder and titanium (Ti) powder are mixed, pressed, and then sintered at a high temperature of 1300-1500 °C. The morphology and conductivity of carbon fiber-reinforced titanium matrix (Ti-CF) composites were studied. When the temperature range of the Ti-CF composites was from 1300 to 1500 °C, the porosity and resistivity first decreased and then increased. When the sintering temperature was 1350 °C, the diffraction peak of the sample was the strongest, the porosity was the smallest (4.16%), and the resistivity was the smallest (2.7 MΩ·mm). CFs have a very good strengthening effect on titanium-based composite materials.

Project description:Smart design of advanced substrates for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity is challenging but vital. Herein, we synthesized a new kind of AgNPs/MnO2@Al flexible substrate as a SERS substrate for the detection of the analyte rhodamine 6G (R6G). The fabrication of porous MnO2 nanoflakes on Al foil was conducted via a facile hydrothermal strategy. Owing to the large active surface area of the MnO2 nanoflakes, the Ag nanoparticles were immobilized and displayed superior SERS performance with a low detection concentration of 1 × 10-6 M for R6G. In addition, the SERS performance was found to be strongly related to the morphology of the MnO2@Al substrate material. Our smart design may provide a new method of construction for other advanced SERS substrates for the detection of R6G.

Project description:A study of possible superconducting phases of graphene has been constructed in detail. A realistic tight binding model, fit to ab initio calculations, accounts for the Li-decoration of graphene with broken lattice symmetry, and includes s and d symmetry Bloch character that influences the gap symmetries that can arise. The resulting seven hybridized Li-C orbitals that support nine possible bond pairing amplitudes. The gap equation is solved for all possible gap symmetries. One band is weakly dispersive near the Fermi energy along Γ → M where its Bloch wave function has linear combination of [Formula: see text] and dxy character, and is responsible for [Formula: see text] and dxy pairing with lowest pairing energy in our model. These symmetries almost preserve properties from a two band model of pristine graphene. Another part of this band, along K → Γ, is nearly degenerate with upper s band that favors extended s wave pairing which is not found in two band model. Upon electron doping to a critical chemical potential μ1 = 0.22 eV the pairing potential decreases, then increases until a second critical value μ2 = 1.3 eV at which a phase transition to a distorted s-wave occurs. The distortion of d- or s-wave phases are a consequence of decoration which is not appear in two band pristine model. In the pristine graphene these phases convert to usual d-wave or extended s-wave pairing.

Project description:Tribological studies of the 2D nanoadditives such as MoS2 and graphene are mostly performed in base oils such as SN500, SN150, or paraffin. We have focused on their effect in lubrication properties of industrial oils (e.g., axle, transmission, and compressor oils) along with SN500 oil employing a four-ball tester. Two types of graphene powders (GpowA with fewer defects than GpowC), MoS2 powder, and their physical mixtures are chosen as nanoadditives. The tribology performance for 0.05 wt% of additives in various industrial oils is evaluated by monitoring the coefficient of friction (COF) during rubbing and wear scar diameter (WSD) of the steel balls after rubbing. Elemental analysis and electron microscopy have been performed on the wear surfaces for evidence of any tribofilm formation. GpowA favors antifriction for axle and transmission oils with 40% reduction in axle oil, whereas it improved antiwear properties in most of the oils. GpowC shows a COF decrement by 12% only for compressor oil, but contribute to wear reduction in all oils. The observed COF reduction is attributed to the compatibility of nonfunctionalized GpowA with nonpolar axle oil and functionalized GpowC with polar compressor oil. MoS2 shows a decrease in the COF and WSD in most industrial oils; the best being 60% COF and 7% WSD reduction in axle oil. For additives in oils that favor antiwear, flakes or particles are observed on the wear surface supported by the higher elemental contribution of the constituents from the wear region. The mixtures of GpowA or C with MoS2, however, does not seem to favor improvement in the COF or WSD in industrial oils. With assistance from oleylamine surfactants, the lubrication properties of most additives are improved, particularly for the mixtures with 12-15% COF reduction and 4-7% WSD reduction in compressor oil. The study indicates that a large sheet size of high-quality graphene aids antifriction and addition of surfactant molecules facilitates a co-operative effect between MoS2 and graphene for improved tribology.

Project description:The employment of two-dimensional materials, as growth substrates or buffer layers, enables the epitaxial growth of layered materials with different crystalline symmetries with a preferential crystalline orientation and the synthesis of heterostructures with a large lattice constant mismatch. In this work, we employ single crystalline graphene to modify the sulfurization dynamics of copper foil for the deterministic synthesis of large-area Cu9S5 crystals. Molecular dynamics simulations using the Reax force-field are used to mimic the sulfurization process of a series of different atomistic systems specifically built to understand the role of graphene during the sulphur atom attack over the Cu(111) surface. Cu9S5 flakes show a flat morphology with an average lateral size of hundreds of micrometers. Cu9S5 presents a direct band-gap of 2.5 eV evaluated with light absorption and light emission spectroscopies. Electrical characterization shows that the Cu9S5 crystals present high p-type doping with a hole mobility of 2 cm2 V-1 s-1.

Project description:There is a long-standing challenge to realize in situ visualization of incorporated inorganic materials in organic-inorganic composites in a post-labeling manner, owing to the lack of specific fluorescent organic dye molecules for targeting inorganic materials. Herein, we observe that the specific covalent B-O binding between the hydroxyl groups of inorganic materials and commercially available aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-active boronic acid could lead to the formation of highly emissive solid-state fluorescent composite materials. The hydroxyl-triggered luminescent probe may serve as a practical method for in situ location of incorporated inorganic materials in polymer-matrix composites by simply dipping the composite film in boronic acid-modified AIE solution. This present work offers a non-invasive avenue to locate inorganic materials which possess hydroxyl-groups in polymer-matrix composites, thereby developing a convenient screening strategy for assessing the advanced properties of composites. This strategy can also be extended to the targeted tracing of other inorganic materials with inherent and functionalized carboxyl, amino, sulfhydryl and other groups via tuning the binding affinity between the inorganic materials and luminescent molecules.

Project description:Thin membranes, such as monolayer graphene of monoatomic thickness, are bound to exhibit lateral buckling under uniaxial tensile loading that impairs its mechanical behaviour. In this work, we have developed an experimental device to subject 2D materials to controlled equibiaxial strain on supported beams that can be flexed up or down to subject the material to either compression or tension, respectively. Using strain gauges in tandem with Raman spectroscopy measurements, we monitor the G and 2D phonon properties of graphene under biaxial strain and thus extract important information about the uptake of stress under these conditions. The experimental shift over strain for the G and 2D Raman peaks were found to be in the range of 62.3 ± 5 cm(-1)/%, and 148.2 ± 6 cm(-1)/%, respectively, for monolayer but also bilayer graphenes. The corresponding Grüneisen parameters for the G and 2D peaks were found to be between 1.97 ± 0.15 and 2.86 ± 0.12, respectively. These values agree reasonably well with those obtained from small-strain bubble-type experiments. The results presented are also backed up by classical and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations and excellent agreement of Γ-E2g shifts with strains and the Grüneisen parameter was observed.

Project description:In this study, four composites with different ZrB2 content were made by the Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS/FAST) technique. The sintering process was carried out at 1373 K for 5 min under an argon atmosphere. The effect of ZrB2 reinforcing phase content on the density, microstructure, and mechanical and tribological properties of composites was investigated. The results were compared with experimental data obtained for 316L austenitic stainless steel without the reinforcing phase. The results showed that the ZrB2 content significantly affected the tested properties. With the increasing content of the ZrB2 reinforcing phase, there was an increase in the Young's modulus and hardness and an improvement in the abrasive wear resistance of sintered composites. In all composites, new fine precipitates were formed and distributed in the steel matrix and along the grain boundaries. Microstructural analysis (Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Wavelength Dispersive Spectroscopy (WDS)) has revealed that the fine precipitates chromium contained chromium as well as boron.
