Geometric fluctuation of conformal Hilbert spaces and multiple graviton modes in fractional quantum Hall effect.

ABSTRACT: Neutral excitations in fractional quantum Hall (FQH) fluids define the incompressibility of topological phases, a species of which can show graviton-like behaviors and are thus called the graviton modes (GMs). Here, we develop the microscopic theory for multiple GMs in FQH fluids and show explicitly that they are associated with the geometric fluctuation of well-defined conformal Hilbert spaces (CHSs), which are hierarchical subspaces within a single Landau level, each with emergent conformal symmetry and continuously parameterized by a unimodular metric. This leads to several statements about the number and the merging/splitting of GMs, which are verified numerically with both model and realistic interactions. We also discuss how the microscopic theory can serve as the basis for the additional Haldane modes in the effective field theory description and their experimental relevance to realistic electron-electron interactions.

Robust integer and fractional helical modes in the quantum Hall effect.

Project description:Electronic systems harboring one-dimensional helical modes, where spin and momentum are locked, have lately become an important field of its own. When coupled to a conventional superconductor, such systems are expected to manifest topological superconductivity; a unique phase hosting exotic Majorana zero modes. Even more interesting are fractional helical modes, yet to be observed, which open the route for realizing generalized parafermions. Possessing non-abelian exchange statistics, these quasiparticles may serve as building blocks in topological quantum computing. Here, we present a new approach to form protected one-dimensional helical edge modes in the quantum Hall regime. The novel platform is based on a carefully designed double-quantum-well structure in a GaAs based system hosting two electronic sub-bands; each tuned to the quantum Hall effect regime. By electrostatic gating of different areas of the structure, counter-propagating integer, as well as fractional, edge modes with opposite spins are formed. We demonstrate that due to spin-protection, these helical modes remain ballistic for large distances. In addition to the formation of helical modes, this platform can serve as a rich playground for artificial induction of compounded fractional edge modes, and for construction of edge modes based interferometers.

Observation of ballistic upstream modes at fractional quantum Hall edges of graphene.

Project description:The presence of "upstream" modes, moving against the direction of charge current flow in the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) phases, is critical for the emergence of renormalized modes with exotic quantum statistics. Detection of excess noise at the edge is a smoking gun for the presence of upstream modes. Here, we report noise measurements at the edges of FQH states realized in dual graphite-gated bilayer graphene devices. A noiseless dc current is injected at one of the edge contacts, and the noise generated at contacts at length, L = 4 μm and 10 μm away along the upstream direction is studied. For integer and particle-like FQH states, no detectable noise is measured. By contrast, for "hole-conjugate" FQH states, we detect a strong noise proportional to the injected current, unambiguously proving the existence of upstream modes. The noise magnitude remains independent of length, which matches our theoretical analysis demonstrating the ballistic nature of upstream energy transport, quite distinct from the diffusive propagation reported earlier in GaAs-based systems.

Wigner solid pinning modes tuned by fractional quantum Hall states of a nearby layer.

Project description:We studied a bilayer system hosting two-dimensional electron systems (2DESs) in close proximity but isolated from one another by a thin barrier. One 2DES has low electron density and forms a Wigner solid (WS) at high magnetic fields. The other has much higher density and, in the same field, exhibits fractional quantum Hall states (FQHSs). The WS spectrum has resonances which are understood as pinning modes, oscillations of the WS within the residual disorder. We found the pinning mode frequencies of the WS are strongly affected by the FQHSs in the nearby layer. Analysis of the spectra indicates that the majority layer screens like a dielectric medium even when its Landau filling is ~1/2, at which the layer is essentially a composite fermion (CF) metal. Although the majority layer is only ~ one WS lattice constant away, a WS site only induces an image charge of ~0.1e in the CF metal.

Non-Hermitian fractional quantum Hall states.

Project description:We demonstrate the emergence of a topological ordered phase for non-Hermitian systems. Specifically, we elucidate that systems with non-Hermitian two-body interactions show a fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state. The non-Hermitian Hamiltonian is considered to be relevant to cold atoms with dissipation. We conclude the emergence of the non-Hermitian FQH state by the presence of the topological degeneracy and by the many-body Chern number for the ground state multiplet showing Ctot = 1. The robust topological degeneracy against non-Hermiticity arises from the manybody translational symmetry. Furthermore, we discover that the FQH state emerges without any repulsive interactions, which is attributed to a phenomenon reminiscent of the continuous quantum Zeno effect.

Andreev reflection of fractional quantum Hall quasiparticles.

Project description:Electron correlation in a quantum many-body state appears as peculiar scattering behaviour at its boundary, symbolic of which is Andreev reflection at a metal-superconductor interface. Despite being fundamental in nature, dictated by the charge conservation law, however, the process has had no analogues outside the realm of superconductivity so far. Here, we report the observation of an Andreev-like process originating from a topological quantum many-body effect instead of superconductivity. A narrow junction between fractional and integer quantum Hall states shows a two-terminal conductance exceeding that of the constituent fractional state. This remarkable behaviour, while theoretically predicted more than two decades ago but not detected to date, can be interpreted as Andreev reflection of fractionally charged quasiparticles. The observed fractional quantum Hall Andreev reflection provides a fundamental picture that captures microscopic charge dynamics at the boundaries of topological quantum many-body states.

Unconventional fractional quantum Hall effect in bilayer graphene.

Project description:Recent experimental progress in Hall measurements in bilayer graphene in the so-called open-face configuration of boron nitride encapsulated samples, together with the earlier technique of suspended samples, allows for precise observation of the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) in all 4 subbands of the Lowest Landau level (with n = 0 and n = 1) and in the next LL subbands (with n = 2) in the bilayer system. Many newly observed FQHE features do not agree with a conventional model of composite fermions and reveal a different hierarchy in comparison to monolayer graphene or GaAs 2DEG. We explain the peculiarity of the FQHE hierarchy in the bilayer system in the framework of a topological approach, which includes the composite fermion model as its special case. Inclusion of a topological effect caused by the hopping of electrons between the two sheets in the bilayer system allowed for an explanation of the FQHE hierarchy in the graphene bilayer in satisfactory accordance with the experimental observations.

Optical Sensing of Fractional Quantum Hall Effect in Graphene.

Project description:Graphene and its heterostructures provide a unique and versatile playground for explorations of strongly correlated electronic phases, ranging from unconventional fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states in a monolayer system to a plethora of superconducting and insulating states in twisted bilayers. However, the access to those fascinating phases has been thus far entirely restricted to transport techniques, due to the lack of a robust energy bandgap that makes graphene hard to access optically. Here we demonstrate an all-optical, noninvasive spectroscopic tool for probing electronic correlations in graphene using excited Rydberg excitons in an adjacent transition metal dichalcogenide monolayer. These excitons are highly susceptible to the compressibility of graphene electrons, allowing us to detect the formation of odd-denominator FQH states at high magnetic fields. Owing to its submicron spatial resolution, the technique we demonstrate circumvents spatial inhomogeneities and paves the way for optical studies of correlated states in optically inactive atomically thin materials.

Observation of the scaling dimension of fractional quantum Hall anyons.

Project description:Unconventional quasiparticles emerging in the fractional quantum Hall regime1,2 present the challenge of observing their exotic properties unambiguously. Although the fractional charge of quasiparticles has been demonstrated for nearly three decades3-5, the first convincing evidence of their anyonic quantum statistics has only recently been obtained6,7 and, so far, the so-called scaling dimension that determines the propagation dynamics of the quasiparticles remains elusive. In particular, although the nonlinearity of the tunnelling quasiparticle current should reveal their scaling dimension, the measurements fail to match theory, arguably because this observable is not robust to non-universal complications8-12. Here we expose the scaling dimension from the thermal noise to shot noise crossover and observe an agreement with expectations. Measurements are fitted to the predicted finite-temperature expression involving both the scaling dimension of the quasiparticles and their charge12,13, in contrast to previous charge investigations focusing on the high-bias shot-noise regime14. A systematic analysis, repeated on several constrictions and experimental conditions, consistently matches the theoretical scaling dimensions for the fractional quasiparticles emerging at filling factors ν = 1/3, 2/5 and 2/3. This establishes a central property of fractional quantum Hall anyons and demonstrates a powerful and complementary window into exotic quasiparticles.

Unconventional fractional quantum Hall effect in monolayer and bilayer graphene.

Project description:The commensurability condition is applied to determine the hierarchy of fractional fillings of Landau levels in monolayer and in bilayer graphene. The filling rates for fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) in graphene are found in the first three Landau levels in one-to-one agreement with the experimental data. The presence of even denominator filling fractions in the hierarchy for FQHE in bilayer graphene is explained. Experimentally observed hierarchy of FQHE in the first and second Landau levels in monolayer graphene and in the zeroth Landau level in bilayer graphene is beyond the conventional composite fermion interpretation but fits to the presented nonlocal topology commensurability condition.

Universality of quantum phase transitions in the integer and fractional quantum Hall regimes.

Project description:Fractional quantum Hall (FQH) phases emerge due to strong electronic interactions and are characterized by anyonic quasiparticles, each distinguished by unique topological parameters, fractional charge, and statistics. In contrast, the integer quantum Hall (IQH) effects can be understood from the band topology of non-interacting electrons. We report a surprising super-universality of the critical behavior across all FQH and IQH transitions. Contrary to the anticipated state-dependent critical exponents, our findings reveal the same critical scaling exponent κ = 0.41 ± 0.02 and localization length exponent γ = 2.4 ± 0.2 for fractional and integer quantum Hall transitions. From these, we extract the value of the dynamical exponent z ≈ 1. We have achieved this in ultra-high mobility trilayer graphene devices with a metallic screening layer close to the conduction channels. The observation of these global critical exponents across various quantum Hall phase transitions was masked in previous studies by significant sample-to-sample variation in the measured values of κ in conventional semiconductor heterostructures, where long-range correlated disorder dominates. We show that the robust scaling exponents are valid in the limit of short-range disorder correlations.
