Wigner solid pinning modes tuned by fractional quantum Hall states of a nearby layer.

ABSTRACT: We studied a bilayer system hosting two-dimensional electron systems (2DESs) in close proximity but isolated from one another by a thin barrier. One 2DES has low electron density and forms a Wigner solid (WS) at high magnetic fields. The other has much higher density and, in the same field, exhibits fractional quantum Hall states (FQHSs). The WS spectrum has resonances which are understood as pinning modes, oscillations of the WS within the residual disorder. We found the pinning mode frequencies of the WS are strongly affected by the FQHSs in the nearby layer. Analysis of the spectra indicates that the majority layer screens like a dielectric medium even when its Landau filling is ~1/2, at which the layer is essentially a composite fermion (CF) metal. Although the majority layer is only ~ one WS lattice constant away, a WS site only induces an image charge of ~0.1e in the CF metal.

Unconventional fractional quantum Hall states and Wigner crystallization in suspended Corbino graphene.

Project description:Competition between liquid and solid states in two-dimensional electron systems is an intriguing problem in condensed matter physics. We have investigated competing Wigner crystal and fractional quantum Hall (FQH) liquid phases in atomically thin suspended graphene devices in Corbino geometry. Low-temperature magnetoconductance and transconductance measurements along with IV characteristics all indicate strong charge density dependent modulation of electron transport. Our results show unconventional FQH phases which do not fit the standard Jain's series for conventional FQH states, instead they appear to originate from residual interactions of composite fermions in partially filled Landau levels. Also at very low charge density with filling factors [Formula: see text], electrons crystallize into an ordered Wigner solid which eventually transforms into an incompressible Hall liquid at filling factors around ????1/7. Building on the unique Corbino sample structure, our experiments pave the way for enhanced understanding of the ordered phases of interacting electrons.

Fractional Quantum Hall Phases of Bosons with Tunable Interactions: From the Laughlin Liquid to a Fractional Wigner Crystal.

Project description:Highly tunable platforms for realizing topological phases of matter are emerging from atomic and photonic systems and offer the prospect of designing interactions between particles. The shape of the potential, besides playing an important role in the competition between different fractional quantum Hall phases, can also trigger the transition to symmetry-broken phases, or even to phases where topological and symmetry-breaking order coexist. Here, we explore the phase diagram of an interacting bosonic model in the lowest Landau level at half filling as two-body interactions are tuned. Apart from the well-known Laughlin liquid, Wigner crystal, stripe, and bubble phases, we also find evidence of a phase that exhibits crystalline order at fractional filling per crystal site. The Laughlin liquid transits into this phase when pairs of bosons strongly repel each other at relative angular momentum 4?. We show that such interactions can be achieved by dressing ground-state cold atoms with multiple different-parity Rydberg states.

Robust integer and fractional helical modes in the quantum Hall effect.

Project description:Electronic systems harboring one-dimensional helical modes, where spin and momentum are locked, have lately become an important field of its own. When coupled to a conventional superconductor, such systems are expected to manifest topological superconductivity; a unique phase hosting exotic Majorana zero modes. Even more interesting are fractional helical modes, yet to be observed, which open the route for realizing generalized parafermions. Possessing non-abelian exchange statistics, these quasiparticles may serve as building blocks in topological quantum computing. Here, we present a new approach to form protected one-dimensional helical edge modes in the quantum Hall regime. The novel platform is based on a carefully designed double-quantum-well structure in a GaAs based system hosting two electronic sub-bands; each tuned to the quantum Hall effect regime. By electrostatic gating of different areas of the structure, counter-propagating integer, as well as fractional, edge modes with opposite spins are formed. We demonstrate that due to spin-protection, these helical modes remain ballistic for large distances. In addition to the formation of helical modes, this platform can serve as a rich playground for artificial induction of compounded fractional edge modes, and for construction of edge modes based interferometers.

Observation of ballistic upstream modes at fractional quantum Hall edges of graphene.

Project description:The presence of "upstream" modes, moving against the direction of charge current flow in the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) phases, is critical for the emergence of renormalized modes with exotic quantum statistics. Detection of excess noise at the edge is a smoking gun for the presence of upstream modes. Here, we report noise measurements at the edges of FQH states realized in dual graphite-gated bilayer graphene devices. A noiseless dc current is injected at one of the edge contacts, and the noise generated at contacts at length, L = 4 μm and 10 μm away along the upstream direction is studied. For integer and particle-like FQH states, no detectable noise is measured. By contrast, for "hole-conjugate" FQH states, we detect a strong noise proportional to the injected current, unambiguously proving the existence of upstream modes. The noise magnitude remains independent of length, which matches our theoretical analysis demonstrating the ballistic nature of upstream energy transport, quite distinct from the diffusive propagation reported earlier in GaAs-based systems.

Non-Hermitian fractional quantum Hall states.

Project description:We demonstrate the emergence of a topological ordered phase for non-Hermitian systems. Specifically, we elucidate that systems with non-Hermitian two-body interactions show a fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state. The non-Hermitian Hamiltonian is considered to be relevant to cold atoms with dissipation. We conclude the emergence of the non-Hermitian FQH state by the presence of the topological degeneracy and by the many-body Chern number for the ground state multiplet showing Ctot = 1. The robust topological degeneracy against non-Hermiticity arises from the manybody translational symmetry. Furthermore, we discover that the FQH state emerges without any repulsive interactions, which is attributed to a phenomenon reminiscent of the continuous quantum Zeno effect.

Geometric fluctuation of conformal Hilbert spaces and multiple graviton modes in fractional quantum Hall effect.

Project description:Neutral excitations in fractional quantum Hall (FQH) fluids define the incompressibility of topological phases, a species of which can show graviton-like behaviors and are thus called the graviton modes (GMs). Here, we develop the microscopic theory for multiple GMs in FQH fluids and show explicitly that they are associated with the geometric fluctuation of well-defined conformal Hilbert spaces (CHSs), which are hierarchical subspaces within a single Landau level, each with emergent conformal symmetry and continuously parameterized by a unimodular metric. This leads to several statements about the number and the merging/splitting of GMs, which are verified numerically with both model and realistic interactions. We also discuss how the microscopic theory can serve as the basis for the additional Haldane modes in the effective field theory description and their experimental relevance to realistic electron-electron interactions.

Unconventional fractional quantum Hall effect in bilayer graphene.

Project description:Recent experimental progress in Hall measurements in bilayer graphene in the so-called open-face configuration of boron nitride encapsulated samples, together with the earlier technique of suspended samples, allows for precise observation of the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) in all 4 subbands of the Lowest Landau level (with n = 0 and n = 1) and in the next LL subbands (with n = 2) in the bilayer system. Many newly observed FQHE features do not agree with a conventional model of composite fermions and reveal a different hierarchy in comparison to monolayer graphene or GaAs 2DEG. We explain the peculiarity of the FQHE hierarchy in the bilayer system in the framework of a topological approach, which includes the composite fermion model as its special case. Inclusion of a topological effect caused by the hopping of electrons between the two sheets in the bilayer system allowed for an explanation of the FQHE hierarchy in the graphene bilayer in satisfactory accordance with the experimental observations.

Unconventional fractional quantum Hall effect in monolayer and bilayer graphene.

Project description:The commensurability condition is applied to determine the hierarchy of fractional fillings of Landau levels in monolayer and in bilayer graphene. The filling rates for fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) in graphene are found in the first three Landau levels in one-to-one agreement with the experimental data. The presence of even denominator filling fractions in the hierarchy for FQHE in bilayer graphene is explained. Experimentally observed hierarchy of FQHE in the first and second Landau levels in monolayer graphene and in the zeroth Landau level in bilayer graphene is beyond the conventional composite fermion interpretation but fits to the presented nonlocal topology commensurability condition.

Observation of the scaling dimension of fractional quantum Hall anyons.

Project description:Unconventional quasiparticles emerging in the fractional quantum Hall regime1,2 present the challenge of observing their exotic properties unambiguously. Although the fractional charge of quasiparticles has been demonstrated for nearly three decades3-5, the first convincing evidence of their anyonic quantum statistics has only recently been obtained6,7 and, so far, the so-called scaling dimension that determines the propagation dynamics of the quasiparticles remains elusive. In particular, although the nonlinearity of the tunnelling quasiparticle current should reveal their scaling dimension, the measurements fail to match theory, arguably because this observable is not robust to non-universal complications8-12. Here we expose the scaling dimension from the thermal noise to shot noise crossover and observe an agreement with expectations. Measurements are fitted to the predicted finite-temperature expression involving both the scaling dimension of the quasiparticles and their charge12,13, in contrast to previous charge investigations focusing on the high-bias shot-noise regime14. A systematic analysis, repeated on several constrictions and experimental conditions, consistently matches the theoretical scaling dimensions for the fractional quasiparticles emerging at filling factors ν = 1/3, 2/5 and 2/3. This establishes a central property of fractional quantum Hall anyons and demonstrates a powerful and complementary window into exotic quasiparticles.

Upstream modes and antidots poison graphene quantum Hall effect.

Project description:The quantum Hall effect is the seminal example of topological protection, as charge carriers are transmitted through one-dimensional edge channels where backscattering is prohibited. Graphene has made its marks as an exceptional platform to reveal new facets of this remarkable property. However, in conventional Hall bar geometries, topological protection of graphene edge channels is found regrettably less robust than in high mobility semi-conductors. Here, we explore graphene quantum Hall regime at the local scale, using a scanning gate microscope. We reveal the detrimental influence of antidots along the graphene edges, mediating backscattering towards upstream edge channels, hence triggering topological breakdown. Combined with simulations, our experimental results provide further insights into graphene quantum Hall channels vulnerability. In turn, this may ease future developments towards precise manipulation of topologically protected edge channels hosted in various types of two-dimensional crystals.
