The COVID-19 shock and consumer credit: Evidence from credit card data.

ABSTRACT: We study the dynamic effect of the COVID-19 shock on credit card use in 2020. Local case incidence had a strong negative effect on credit card spending in the early months of the pandemic, which diminished over time. This time-varying pattern was driven by the fear of the virus, rather than government support programs, consistent with the "pandemic fatigue" of consumers. Local pandemic severity also had a strong effect on credit card repayments. These spending and repayment effects offset each other, resulting in no effect on credit card borrowing, consistent with credit-smoothing behavior. The local stringency of nonpharmaceutical interventions also had a negative effect on spending and repayments, albeit smaller in magnitude. We conclude that the pandemic itself was a more important driver of changes in credit card use than the public health policy response.

Means-tested COVID-19 stimulus payment and consumer spending: Evidence from card transaction data in South Korea☆

Project description:This study examines the effect of a means-tested COVID-19 stimulus payment, which was provided by the Seoul Metropolitan Government in South Korea, on consumer spending. The Seoul government issued a one-off payment in the spring of 2020 for residents in the city living below the national median income. We use daily card transaction data aggregated by users’ age, income and location of residence, and apply a difference-in-differences approach to assess the effect of the stimulus payment. We compare consumption for the treatment (eligible for the payment) and control (ineligible but with a similar level of income) groups before and after the implementation of the payment. The results show that the payment increased consumer spending for the treatment group by about 12%. Recipients of the means-tested payment have a marginal propensity of consumption at no less than 59%, larger than that found for a universal emergency payment made by the Korean government and similar stimulus checks in other countries.

Investigating the associations of consumer financial knowledge and financial behaviors of credit card use.

Project description:The growing economic uncertainty makes consumers realize the importance of financial preparedness and management ability. Based on the U.S. National Financial Capability Study dataset from 2009, 2012, 2015, and 2018, this study explores the nexus between consumer financial knowledge and financial behaviors of credit card use. The results indicate that financial knowledge positively affects consumer credit card ownership and desirable financial behaviors of credit card use, and is negatively related to undesirable credit card behaviors. The results are robust to different regression methods and after removing income outliers. The heterogeneity test shows that financial knowledge cannot enhance desirable credit card behaviors because of the income limitations in the low-income group. Therefore, there are implications for policymakers, financial sectors, and consumers to improve consumers' usage of credit cards and cultivate proper consumption habits by enhancing consumer financial knowledge.

Sequences of purchases in credit card data reveal lifestyles in urban populations.

Project description:Zipf-like distributions characterize a wide set of phenomena in physics, biology, economics, and social sciences. In human activities, Zipf's law describes, for example, the frequency of appearance of words in a text or the purchase types in shopping patterns. In the latter, the uneven distribution of transaction types is bound with the temporal sequences of purchases of individual choices. In this work, we define a framework using a text compression technique on the sequences of credit card purchases to detect ubiquitous patterns of collective behavior. Clustering the consumers by their similarity in purchase sequences, we detect five consumer groups. Remarkably, post checking, individuals in each group are also similar in their age, total expenditure, gender, and the diversity of their social and mobility networks extracted from their mobile phone records. By properly deconstructing transaction data with Zipf-like distributions, this method uncovers sets of significant sequences that reveal insights on collective human behavior.

Neural mechanisms of credit card spending.

Project description:Credit cards have often been blamed for consumer overspending and for the growth in household debt. Indeed, laboratory studies of purchase behavior have shown that credit cards can facilitate spending in ways that are difficult to justify on purely financial grounds. However, the psychological mechanisms behind this spending facilitation effect remain conjectural. A leading hypothesis is that credit cards reduce the pain of payment and so 'release the brakes' that hold expenditures in check. Alternatively, credit cards could provide a 'step on the gas,' increasing motivation to spend. Here we present the first evidence of differences in brain activation in the presence of real credit and cash purchase opportunities. In an fMRI shopping task, participants purchased items tailored to their interests, either by using a personal credit card or their own cash. Credit card purchases were associated with strong activation in the striatum, which coincided with onset of the credit card cue and was not related to product price. In contrast, reward network activation weakly predicted cash purchases, and only among relatively cheaper items. The presence of reward network activation differences highlights the potential neural impact of novel payment instruments in stimulating spending-these fundamental reward mechanisms could be exploited by new payment methods as we transition to a purely cashless society.

Countercyclical capital buffers and credit supply: Evidence from the COVID-19 crisis☆

Project description:This paper examines how European banks adjusted their lending subsequent to the release of the countercyclical capital buffers (CCyB) during the COVID-19 pandemic. At its onset in 2020Q1, being exposed to a higher ex-ante countercyclical capital buffer led to a reduction in banks’ lending. Yet the relief of the CCyBs removed this negative effect from 2020Q2 onwards. We find that the reduction in CCyBs led to a significant relative increase in the average bank’s lending by about 5.6 percentage points of their total assets. This increase happened mainly in retail mortgage loans and was stronger for poorly-capitalized banks. These results imply that the release of the CCyBs was effective in promoting bank lending during the pandemic.

Consumer credit, chronic disease and risk behaviours.

Project description:BACKGROUND:Credit scores have been identified as a marker of disease burden. This study investigated credit scores' association with chronic diseases and health behaviours that are associated with chronic diseases. METHODS:This cross-sectional analysis included data on 2083 residents of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA in 2015. Nine-digit ZIP code level FICO credit scores were appended to individual self-reported chronic diseases (obesity, diabetes, hypertension) and related health behaviours (smoking, exercise, and salt intake and medication adherence among those with hypertension). Models adjusted for individual-level and area-level demographics and retail pharmacy accessibility. RESULTS:Median ZIP code credit score was 665 (SD=58). In adjusted models, each 50-point increase in ZIP code credit score was significantly associated with: 8% lower chronic disease risk; 6% lower overweight/obesity risk, 19% lower diabetes risk; 9% lower hypertension risk and 14% lower smoking risk. Other health behaviours were not significantly associated. Compared with high prime credit, subprime credit score was significantly associated with a 15%-70% increased risk of chronic disease, following a dose-response pattern with a prime rating. CONCLUSION:Lower area level credit scores may be associated with greater chronic disease prevalence but not necessarily with related health behaviours. Area-level consumer credit may make a novel contribution to identifying chronic disease patterns.

Unequal but essential: How subsistence consumer-entrepreneurs negotiate unprecedented shock with extraordinary resilience during COVID-19.

Project description:We use qualitative interviews to study subsistence consumers confronting the global, pervasive and extended challenges of COVID-19, encompassing literally all realms of daily life. For subsistence consumers whose circumstances are filled with day-to-day uncertainty and a small margin of error to begin with, the pandemic has led to manifold uncertainties and a disappearing margin of error, with potentially lethal consequences. Their constraints to thinking and lack of self-confidence arising from both low income and low literacy are magnified in the face of the complex, invisible pandemic and the fear and panic it has caused. Characteristic relational strengths are weakened with social distancing and fear of infection. Yet, subsistence consumers display humanity in catastrophe, and confront the uncontrollable by reiterating a higher power. Consumption is reduced to the very bare essentials and income generation involves staying the course versus finding any viable alternative. We derive implications for consumer affairs.

Credit card fraud detection using a hierarchical behavior-knowledge space model.

Project description:With the advancement in machine learning, researchers continue to devise and implement effective intelligent methods for fraud detection in the financial sector. Indeed, credit card fraud leads to billions of dollars in losses for merchants every year. In this paper, a multi-classifier framework is designed to address the challenges of credit card fraud detections. An ensemble model with multiple machine learning classification algorithms is designed, in which the Behavior-Knowledge Space (BKS) is leveraged to combine the predictions from multiple classifiers. To ascertain the effectiveness of the developed ensemble model, publicly available data sets as well as real financial records are employed for performance evaluations. Through statistical tests, the results positively indicate the effectiveness of the developed model as compared with the commonly used majority voting method for combination of predictions from multiple classifiers in tackling noisy data classification as well as credit card fraud detection problems.

How does non-interest income affect bank credit risk? Evidence before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Project description:This paper considers the COVID-19 pandemic's role and investigates the impact of non-interest income on bank credit risk. Specifically, it performs a comparative analysis between before and during the pandemic periods. The data of listed banks are extracted from the BankFocus for 14 Asian emerging markets. The regression results indicate the positive influence of non-interest income on bank credit risk. Interestingly, the magnitude of the impact is higher in the pre-pandemic period, and it significantly reduces during the pandemic period. This study provides implications for bank practitioners and regulators.

Consumer credit usage in Canada during the coronavirus pandemic

Project description:Abstract The recent COVID‐19 pandemic has devastated economies worldwide. Using detailed, monthly data from a major consumer credit reporting agency in Canada, we have examined individuals’ use of credit cards and home‐equity lines of credit (HELOCs). We found a dramatic leftward shift in the distribution of credit card and HELOC outstanding balances, providing evidence for a widespread reduction in credit usage. Our findings suggest that, during the COVID‐19 recession, Canadian consumers were able to meet their financial needs without increasing their debt burdens. These results complement other findings concerning a decline in consumer spending and the results of government assistance programs, and imply that the economic consequences of this pandemic are very different from those in other recessions.
