Polyamines are positively charged alkylamines ubiquitous among eukaryotes, prokaryotes, and archaea. Humans obtain polyamines through dietary intake, metabolic production, or uptake of polyamines made by gut microbes. The polyamine biosynthetic pathway used by most gut microbes differs from that used by human cells.
