Project description:Alloyed metals in nanoscale exhibit some intriguing features that are absent in mono-metallic nanostructures. Here we report silver and gold alloyed nanoislands with high tunability of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) wavelength in the visible range for wafer-level plasmonic color filter arrays. The nanofabrication includes two simple steps of concurrent thermal evaporation of Ag and Au grains and solid-state dewetting of the as-deposited nanocomposite thin film. The alloy ratio during the evaporation precisely tunes the LSPR wavelengths within 415-609 nm spectrum range. The elemental composition map reveals that alloyed nanoislands are completely miscible while preserving uniform size, regardless of the alloy ratio. Besides, the multiple lift-off processes and thermal dewetting of Ag/Au nanocomposite thin films successfully demonstrate the wafer-level nanofabrication of plasmonic color filter mosaic. Each plasmonic color pixel comprises different alloy ratio and efficiently transmits colors ranging from cyan, yellow, and magenta. The transmission spectra transposed onto a CIE 1931 color map show comparable color diversity to the plasmonic color filters fabricated by conventional e-beam lithographic techniques. This novel method provides a new direction for large-scale and visible plasmonic color filter arrays in advanced display or imaging applications.

Project description:We report the plasmonic enhancement of the photocatalytic properties of Pt/n-Si/Ag photodiode photocatalysts using Au/Ag core/shell nanorods. We show that Au/Ag core/shell nanorods can be synthesized with tunable plasmon resonance frequencies and then conjugated onto Pt/n-Si/Ag photodiodes using well-defined chemistry. Photocatalytic studies showed that the conjugation with Au/Ag core/shell nanorods can significantly enhance the photocatalytic activity by more than a factor of 3. Spectral dependence studies further revealed that the photocatalytic enhancement is strongly correlated with the plasmonic absorption spectra of the Au/Ag core/shell nanorods, unambiguously demonstrating the plasmonic enhancement effect.

Project description:Multimetallic plasmonic systems usually have distinct advantages over monometallic nanoparticles due to the peculiarity of the electronic structure appearing in advanced functionality systems, which is of great importance in a variety of applications including catalysis and sensing. Despite several reported techniques, the controllable synthesis of multimetallic plasmonic nanoparticles in soft conditions is still a challenge. Here, mono-, bi- and tri-metallic nanoparticles were successfully obtained as a result of a single step laser-induced deposition approach from monometallic commercially available precursors. The process of nanoparticles formation is starting with photodecomposition of the metal precursor resulting in nucleation and the following growth of the metal phase. The deposited nanoparticles were studied comprehensively with various experimental techniques such as SEM, TEM, EDX, XPS, and UV-VIS absorption spectroscopy. The size of monometallic nanoparticles is strongly dependent on the type of metal: 140-200 nm for Au, 40-60 nm for Ag, 2-3 nm for Pt. Bi- and trimetallic nanoparticles were core-shell structures representing monometallic crystallites surrounded by an alloy of respective metals. The formation of an alloy phase took place between monometallic nanocrystallites of different metals in course of their growth and agglomeration stage.

Project description:A promising route to realize solar-to-chemical energy conversion resorts to water splitting using plasmon photocatalysis. However, the ultrafast carrier dynamics and underlying mechanism in such processes has seldom been investigated, especially when the single-atom catalyst is introduced. Here, from the perspective of quantum dynamics at the atomic length scale and femtosecond time scale, we probe the carrier and structural dynamics of plasmon-assisted water splitting on an Ag-alloyed Pt single-atom catalyst, represented by the Ag19Pt nanocluster. The substitution of an Ag atom by the Pt atom at the tip of the tetrahedron Ag20 enhances the interaction between water and the nanoparticle. The excitation of localized surface plasmons in the Ag19Pt cluster strengthens the charge separation and electron transfer upon illumination. These facts cooperatively turn on more than one charge transfer channels and give rise to enhanced charge transfer from the metal nanoparticle to the water molecule, resulting in rapid plasmon-induced water splitting. These results provide atomistic insights and guidelines for the design of efficient single-atom photocatalysts for plasmon-assisted water splitting.

Project description:A solid-phase photochemical method produces Au-Ag alloy nanoparticles (NPs) with a sharp size distribution and varying composition in AgBr crystals (Au-Ag@AgBr). These features render Au-Ag@AgBr promising as a material for the plasmonic photocatalyst further to provide a possibility of elucidating the action mechanism due to the optical tunability. This study shows that the visible-light activity of Au-Ag@AgBr for degradation of model water pollutant is very sensitive to the alloy composition with a maximum at the mole percent of Au to all Ag in AgBr (y) = 0.012 mol%. Clear positive correlation is observed between the photocatalytic activity and the quality factor defined as the ratio of the peak energy to the full width at half maximum of the localized surface plasmon resonance band. This finding indicates that Au-Ag@AgBr works as a local electromagnetic field enhancement-type plasmonic photocatalyst in which the Au-Ag NPs mainly promotes the charge separation. This conclusion was further supported by the kinetic analysis of the light intensity-dependence of external quantum yield.

Project description:Plasmonic resonances in metallic nano-triangles have been investigated by irradiating these structures with short laser pulses and imaging the resulting ablation and melting patterns. The triangular gold structures were prepared on Si substrates and had a thickness of 40 nm and a side length of ca. 500 nm. Irradiation was carried out with single femtosecond and picosecond laser pulses at a wavelength of 800 nm, which excited higher order plasmon modes in these triangles. The ablation distribution as well as the local melting of small parts of the nanostructures reflect the regions of large near-field enhancement. The observed patterns are reproduced in great detail by FDTD simulations with a 3-dimensional model, provided that the calculations are not based on idealized, but on realistic structures. In this realistic model, details like the exact shape of the triangle edges and the dielectric environment of the structures are taken into account. The experimental numbers found for the field enhancement are typically somewhat smaller than the calculated ones. The results demonstrate the caveats for FDTD simulations and the potential and the limitations of "near field photography" by local ablation and melting for the mapping of complex plasmon fields and their applications.

Project description:A distinctive synthetic method for the efficient synthesis of multifunctional bimetallic plasmonic Au@Ag core@shell nanoparticles (NPs) with tunable size, morphology, and localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) using Triton X-100/hexanol-1/deionized water/cyclohexane-based water-in-oil (W/O) microemulsion (ME) is described. The W/O ME acted as a "true nanoreactor" for the synthesis of Au@Ag core@shell NPs by providing a confined and controlled environment and suppressing the nucleation, growth, agglomeration, and aggregation of the NPs. High-resolution transmission electron microscopic analysis of the synthesized Au@Ag core@shell NPs revealed an "unusual core@shell" contrast, and the selected area electron diffraction and Moiré patterns showed that Au layers are paralleled to Ag layers, thus indicating the formation of Au@Ag core@shell NPs. Interestingly, the UV-visible spectrum of the Au@Ag core@shell NPs exhibited enthralling plasmonic properties by introducing a high-frequency quadrupolar LSPR mode originated from the isolated Au@Ag NPs along with a low-frequency dipolar LSPR mode originated from the coupled Au@Ag NPs. The effective plasmonic enhancement of the Au@Ag core@shell NPs is attributed to the extreme enhancement of the localized electromagnetic field by coupling of the localized surface plasmons of the Au core and Ag shell. The mechanisms for the nucleation and growth of Au@Ag core@shell NPs in W/O ME have been proposed. A unique electron transfer phenomenon between the Au core and Ag shell is elucidated for better understanding and manipulation of the electronic properties, which evinced the development of Au@Ag core@shell NPs through suppression of the galvanic replacement reaction.

Project description:Noble metal nanostructures can produce the surface plasmon resonance under appropriate photoexcitation, which can be used to promote or facilitate chemical reactions, as well as photocatalytic materials, due to their strong plasmon resonance in the visible light region. In the current work, Ag/Au nanoislands (NIs) and Ag NIs/Au film composite systems were designed, and their thermocatalysis performance was investigated using luminescence of Eu3+ as a probe. Compared with Ag NIs, the catalytic efficiency and stability of surface plasmons of Ag/Au NIs and Ag NIs/Au film composite systems were greatly improved. It was found that the metal NIs can also generate strong localized heat at low temperature environment, enabling the transition of NaYF4:Eu3+ to Y2O3: Eu3+, and anti-oxidation was realized by depositing gold on the surface of silver, resulting in the relative stability of the constructed complex.

Project description:Ag, Pt, and Rh monometallic colloids were produced via laser ablation. Separate Ag-Rh and Ag-Pt heterostructures were formed by mixing and resulted in groupings of Rh/Pt nanoparticles adsorbing to the concavities of the larger Ag nanostructures. The 400 nm Ag plasmonic absorption peak was slightly blue-shifted for Ag-Pt and red-shifted for Ag-Rh heterostructures. Catalytic activity for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol increased significantly for Ag-Pt and Ag-Rh compared to the monometallic constituents, and persisted at lower loading ratios and consecutive reduction cycles. The enhancement is attributed to the Rh and Pt nanoparticles forming antenna-reactor-type plasmonic catalysts with the Ag nanostructures.

Project description:Surfaces functionalized with metal nanoparticles (NPs) are of great interest due to their wide potential applications in sensing, biomedicine, nanophotonics, etc. However, the precisely controllable decoration with plasmonic nanoparticles requires sophisticated techniques that are often multistep and complex. Here, we present a laser-induced deposition (LID) approach allowing for single-step surface decoration with NPs of controllable composition, morphology, and spatial distribution. The formation of Ag, Pt, and mixed Ag-Pt nanoparticles on a substrate surface was successfully demonstrated as a result of the LID process from commercially available precursors. The deposited nanoparticles were characterized with SEM, TEM, EDX, X-ray diffraction, and UV-VIS absorption spectroscopy, which confirmed the formation of crystalline nanoparticles of Pt (3-5 nm) and Ag (ca. 100 nm) with plasmonic properties. The advantageous features of the LID process allow us to demonstrate the spatially selective deposition of plasmonic NPs in a laser interference pattern, and thereby, the formation of periodic arrays of Ag NPs forming diffraction grating.
