Project description:The monomer 2-methacrylamido-caprolactam (4) was synthesized from methacryloyl chloride (3) and racemic ?-amino-?-caprolactam (2). Copolymerization of 4 with N,N-dimethylacrylamide (5) was carried out by a free-radical mechanism using 2,2'-azobis(2-methylpropionitrile) (AIBN) as an initiator. The new copolymers show a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) in water and an upper critical solution temperature (UCST) in ethanol, 1-propanol, and 1-butanol. The solubility properties of the copolymers can be influenced significantly by the addition of randomly methylated ?-cyclodextrin (CD). The complexation of the copolymers with CD, was confirmed by the use of ROESY-NMR-spectroscopy.

Project description:Thermosensitive polymers are useful as intelligent materials. Dendrimers have well-defined structures, which can work as multifunctional polymers. In this study, we designed and synthesized various phenylalanine (Phe)-modified zwitterionic dendrimers as pH- and thermo-sensitive polymers. First, polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers were modified with Phe and succinic anhydride (Suc) to prepare carboxy-terminal Phe-modified dendrimers (PAMAM-Suc-Phe and PAMAM-Phe-Suc). Both these dendrimers showed upper critical solution temperature (UCST)-type thermosensitivity. Interestingly, PAMAM-Phe-Suc demonstrated lower critical solution temperature (LCST)-type thermosensitivity at lower pH, but PAMAM-Suc-Phe did not. This indicates that PAMAM-Phe-Suc can switch LCST/UCST-type thermosensitivity according to the solution's pH. PAMAM-Phe-SO3Na with sulfonic acid termini also demonstrated LCST/UCST-type thermosensitivity switched by pH, with a higher sensitivity than PAMAM-Phe-Suc. Coacervation occurred during the phase separation. The quaternized dendrimers (QPAMAM-Phe-Suc and QPAMAM-Phe-SO3Na) and dendrimers conjugating isoleucine or 4-(amino methyl)benzoic acid did not show the unique thermosensitive properties, indicating that the tertiary amines in the dendrimer core and the Phe residues at the termini are indispensable. PAMAM-Phe-SO3Na could separate a model compound (rose bengal) from an aqueous solution because of its encapsulation ability. This is the first report of pH-switchable LCST/UCST-type thermosensitive dendrimers.

Project description:It is well-recognized that block copolymer self-assembly in solution typically produces spheres, worms or vesicles, with the relative volume fraction of each block dictating the copolymer morphology. Stimulus-responsive diblock copolymers that can undergo either sphere/worm or vesicle/worm transitions are also well-documented. Herein we report a new amphiphilic diblock copolymer that can form spheres, worms, vesicles or lamellae in aqueous solution. Such self-assembly behavior is unprecedented for a single diblock copolymer of fixed composition yet is achieved simply by raising the solution temperature from 1 °C (spheres) to 25 °C (worms) to 50 °C (vesicles) to 70 °C (lamellae). Heating increases the degree of hydration (and hence the effective volume fraction) of the core-forming block, with this parameter being solely responsible for driving the sphere-to-worm, worm-to-vesicle and vesicle-to-lamellae transitions. The first two transitions exhibit excellent reversibility but the vesicle-to-lamellae transition exhibits hysteresis on cooling. This new thermoresponsive diblock copolymer provides a useful model for studying such morphological transitions and is likely to be of significant interest for theoretical studies.

Project description:With the purpose of investigating new polymeric materials as potential flow modifiers for their future application in enhanced oil recovery (EOR), a series of amphiphilic poly(di(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate-co-oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate) [P(DEGMA-co-OEGMA)]-based core-shell nanoparticles were prepared by aqueous reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer-mediated polymerization-induced self-assembly. The developed nano-objects were shown to be thermoresponsive, demonstrating a reversible lower-critical solution temperature (LCST)-type phase transition with increasing solution temperature. Characterization of their thermoresponsive nature by variable-temperature UV-vis and dynamic light scattering analyses revealed that these particles reversibly aggregate when heated above their LCST and that the critical transition temperature could be accurately tuned by simply altering the molar ratio of core-forming monomers. Sandpack experiments were conducted to evaluate their pore-blocking performance at low flow rates in a porous medium heated at temperatures above their LCST. This analysis revealed that particles aggregated in the sandpack column and caused pore blockage with a significant reduction in the porous medium permeability. The developed aggregates and the increased pressure generated by the blockage were found to remain stable under the injection of brine and were observed to rapidly dissipate upon reducing the temperature below the LCST of each formulation. Further investigation by double-column sandpack analysis showed that the blockage was able to reform when re-heated and tracked the thermal front. Moreover, the rate of blockage formation was observed to be slower when the LCST of the injected particles was higher. Our investigation is expected to pave the way for the design of "smart" and versatile polymer technologies for EOR applications in future studies.

Project description:The synthesis of cyclic amphiphilic graft copolymers with a hydrophobic polycarbonate backbone and hydrophilic poly(N-acryloylmorpholine) (PNAM) side arms via a combination of ring-opening polymerization (ROP), cyclization via copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC), and reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization is reported. The ability of these cyclic graft copolymers to form unimolecular micelles in water is explored using a combination of light scattering, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryoTEM) analyses, where particle size was found to increase with increasing PNAM arm length. Further analysis revealed differences in the solution conformations, loading capabilities, and morphologies of the cyclic graft copolymers in comparison to equivalent linear graft copolymer unimolecular micelle analogues. Furthermore, the cyclic and linear graft copolymers were found to exhibit significantly different cloud point temperatures. This study highlights how subtle changes in polymer architecture (linear graft copolymer versus cyclic graft copolymer) can dramatically influence a polymer's nanostructure and its properties.

Project description:Self-healing hydrogels have drawngreat attention in the past decade since the self-healing property is one of the characteristics of living creatures. In this study, poly(acrylamide-stat-diacetone acrylamide) P(AM-stat-DAA) with a pendant ketone group was synthesized from easy accessible monomers, and thermo-responsive self-healing hydrogels were prepared through a series of diacylhydrazide compounds cross-linking without any additional stimulus. Although the copolymers do not show thermo-response, the hydrogels became thermo-responsive andboth the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) and upper critical solution temperature (UCST) varied with the composition of the copolymer and structure of cross-linkers. With a dynamic covalent bond connection, the hydrogel showed gel-sol-gel transition triggered by acidity, redox, and ketone to acylhydrazide group ratios. This is another interesting cross-linking induced thermo-responsive (CIT) hydrogel with different properties compared to PNIPAM-based thermo-responsive hydrogels. The self-healing hydrogel with CIT properties could have great potential for application in areas related to bioscience, life simulation, and temperature switching.

Project description:Most polymeric thermoresponsive hydrogels contract upon heating beyond the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the polymers used. Herein, we report a supramolecular hydrogel system that shows the opposite temperature dependence. When the non-thermosesponsive hydrogel NaphtGel, containing dialkoxynaphthalene guest molecules, becomes complexed with the tetra cationic macrocyclic host CBPQT4+ , swelling occurred as a result of host-guest complex formation leading to charge repulsion between the host units, as well as an osmotic contribution of chloride counter-ions embedded in the network. The immersion of NaphtGel in a solution of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) with tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) end groups complexed with CBPQT4+ induced positive thermoresponsive behaviour. The LCST-induced dethreading of the polymer-based pseudorotaxane upon heating led to transfer of the CBPQT4+ host and a concomitant swelling of NaphtGel. Subsequent cooling led to reformation of the TTF-based host-guest complexes in solution and contraction of the hydrogel.

Project description:Thermoresponsive polymer 2-hydroxy-3-isopropoxypropyl hydroxyethyl celluloses (HIPECs) were successfully synthesized, characterized, and applied for thermoresponsive drug delivery. The lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of HIPEC could be easily tuned from 21.1 to 56.1 °C as the molar substitution (MS) increased from 1.21 to 2.88. Dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy experiments revealed that HIPEC can self-assemble into nano-sized aggregates, and their size could be changed by variation in temperature. Additionally, the critical aggregation concentration (CAC) ranged from 0.101 to 0.805 g L-1 by changing MS of HIPEC. In vitro drug delivery studies indicated that the amphotericin B (AmpB) release rate was much faster at temperatures above LCST; approximately 95% of the drug was released from aggregates in 40 h. MTT assays were conducted to evaluate the cytotoxicity of HIPEC, and the observation of the Hoechst 33342 living cell stain using confocal laser scanning microscopy confirmed the high cell viability as HIPECs were used.

Project description:Reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) aqueous dispersion polymerization of 2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate was used to prepare three poly(glycerol monomethacrylate) x -poly(2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate) y (denoted G x -H y or PGMA-PHPMA) diblock copolymers, namely G37-H80, G54-H140, and G71-H200. A master phase diagram was used to select each copolymer composition to ensure that a pure worm phase was obtained in each case, as confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) studies. The latter technique indicated a mean worm cross-sectional diameter (or worm width) ranging from 11 to 20 nm as the mean degree of polymerization (DP) of the hydrophobic PHPMA block was increased from 80 to 200. These copolymer worms form soft hydrogels at 20 °C that undergo degelation on cooling. This thermoresponsive behavior was examined using variable temperature DLS, oscillatory rheology, and SAXS. A 10% w/w G37-H80 worm dispersion dissociated to afford an aqueous solution of molecularly dissolved copolymer chains at 2 °C; on returning to ambient temperature, these chains aggregated to form first spheres and then worms, with the original gel strength being recovered. In contrast, the G54-H140 and G71-H200 worms each only formed spheres on cooling to 2 °C, with thermoreversible (de)gelation being observed in the former case. The sphere-to-worm transition for G54-H140 was monitored by variable temperature SAXS: these experiments indicated the gradual formation of longer worms at higher temperature, with a concomitant reduction in the number of spheres, suggesting worm growth via multiple 1D sphere-sphere fusion events. DLS studies indicated that a 0.1% w/w aqueous dispersion of G71-H200 worms underwent an irreversible worm-to-sphere transition on cooling to 2 °C. Furthermore, irreversible degelation over the time scale of the experiment was also observed during rheological studies of a 10% w/w G71-H200 worm dispersion. Shear-induced polarized light imaging (SIPLI) studies revealed qualitatively different thermoreversible behavior for these three copolymer worm dispersions, although worm alignment was observed at a shear rate of 10 s-1 in each case. Subsequently conducting this technique at a lower shear rate of 1 s-1 combined with ultra small-angle x-ray scattering (USAXS) also indicated that worm branching occurred at a certain critical temperature since an upturn in viscosity, distortion in the birefringence, and a characteristic feature in the USAXS pattern were observed. Finally, SIPLI studies indicated that the characteristic relaxation times required for loss of worm alignment after cessation of shear depended markedly on the copolymer molecular weight.

Project description:Nanocomposites of encapsulated silica nanoparticles were prepared by in situ emulsion polymerization of acrylate monomers. The synthesized material showed good uniformity and dispersion of the inorganic components in the base polymer, which enhances the properties of the nanocomposite material. A nonionic surfactant with lower critical solution temperature (LCST) was used to encapsulate the silica nanoparticles in the acrylic copolymer matrix. This in situ method combined the surface modification and the encapsulation in a single pot, which greatly simplified the process compared with other conventional methods requiring separate processing steps. The morphology of the encapsulated nanosilica particles was investigated by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), which confirmed the uniform distribution of the nanoparticles without any agglomerations. A neat copolymer was also prepared as a control sample. Both the neat copolymer and the prepared nanocomposite were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermal gravimetric analyses (TGA), dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) and the flame resistance test. Due to the uniform dispersion of the non-agglomerated nanoparticles in the matrix of the polymer, TGA and flame resistance test results showed remarkably improved thermal stability. Furthermore, DMTA results demonstrated an enhanced storage modulus of the nanocomposite samples compared with that of the neat copolymer, indicating its superior mechanical properties.
