Adaptive multi-temperature control for transport and storage containers enabled by phase-change materials.

ABSTRACT: The transportation of essential items, such as food and vaccines, often requires adaptive multi-temperature control to maintain high safety and efficiency. While existing methods utilizing phase change materials have shown promise, challenges related to heat transfer and materials' physicochemical properties remain. In this study, we present an adaptive multi-temperature control system using liquid-solid phase transitions to achieve highly effective thermal management using a pair of heat and cold sources. By leveraging the properties of stearic acid and distilled water, we fabricated a multi-temperature maintenance container and demonstrated temperature variations of only 0.14-2.05% over a two-hour period, underscoring the efficacy of our approach. Our findings offer a practical solution to address critical challenges in reliable transportation of goods, with potential implications for various fields in physical, engineering, and life sciences.

Stabilization of low-cost phase change materials for thermal energy storage applications.

Project description:Sodium sulfate decahydrate (Na2SO4.10H2O, SSD), a low-cost phase change material (PCM), can store thermal energy. However, phase separation and unstable energy storage capacity (ESC) limit its use. To address these concerns, eight polymer additives-sodium polyacrylate (SPA), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), Fumed silica (SiO2), potassium polyacrylate (PPA), cellulose nanofiber (CNF), hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC), dextran sulfate sodium (DSS), and poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS)-were used to explore several stabilization mechanisms. The ESC of PCMs deteriorated when thickeners, SPA, PPA, and CNF, were added. DSS-modified PCMs exhibited greater stability up to 150 cycles. Rheology measurements indicated that DSS did not impact SSD viscosity significantly during stabilization. Dynamic light scattering showed that DSS reduces SSD particle size and electrostatically suspends salt particles in a stable homogeneous solution, avoiding phase separation. This study proposes a promising method to improve the thermal stability of salt hydrate PCMs by utilizing polyelectrolyte-salt hydrate mixture for thermal energy storage applications.

Printing Composites with Salt Hydrate Phase Change Materials for Thermal Energy Storage.

Project description:Salt hydrate phase change materials are important in advancing thermal energy storage technologies for the development of renewable energies. At present, their widespread use is limited by undesired undercooling and phase separation, as well as their tendency to corrode container materials. Herein, we report a direct ink writing (DIW) additive manufacturing technique to print noncorrosive salt hydrate composites with thoroughly integrated nucleating agents and thermally conductive additives. First, salt hydrate particles are prepared from nonaqueous Pickering emulsions and then employed as rheological modifiers to formulate thixotropic inks with polymer dispersions in toluene serving as the matrix. These inks are successfully printed at room temperature and cured by solvent evaporation under ambient conditions. The resulting printed and cured composites, containing up to 70 wt % of the salt hydrate, exhibit reliable thermal cyclability for 10 cycles and suppressed undercooling compared to the bulk salt hydrate. Remarkably, the composites consistently maintain their structural integrity and thermal performance throughout the entirety of both the melting and solidification processes. We demonstrate the versatility of this approach by utilizing two salt hydrates, magnesium nitrate hexahydrate (MNH, Tm = 89 °C) and zinc nitrate hexahydrate (ZNH, Tm = 36 °C), to achieve desired thermal characteristics across a wide range of temperatures. Further, we establish that the incorporation of carbon black in these inks enhances the thermal conductivity by at least 33%. This approach consolidates the strengths of additive manufacturing and salt hydrate phase change materials to harness customizable thermal properties, well suited for targeted thermal energy management applications.

Machine learning enabled rational design for dynamic thermal emitters with phase change materials.

Project description:Dynamic thermal emitters have attracted considerable attention due to their potential in widespread applications such as radiative cooling, thermal switching, and adaptive camouflage. However, the state-of-art performances of dynamic emitters are still far below expectations. Here, customized to the special and stringent requirement of dynamic emitters, a neural network model is developed to effectively bridge the structural and spectral spaces and further realizes the inverse design with coupling to genetic algorithms, which considers the broadband spectral responses in different phase-states and utilizes comprehensive measures to ensure the modeling accuracy and computational speed. Besides achieving an outstanding emittance tunability of 0.8, the physics and empirical rules have also been mined qualitatively through decision trees and gradient analyses. The study demonstrates the feasibility of using machine learning to obtain the near-perfect performance of dynamic emitters, as well as guiding the design of other thermal and photonic nanostructures with multifunctions.

Practical long?term storage of strawberries in refrigerated containers at ice temperature

Project description:Abstract This study investigated the effect of storage temperature in the presence or absence of film packaging on the Benihoppe and Kirapika varieties of Japanese strawberries stored for 28 days at 0°C and 3°C. The study was conducted in a 20?foot reefer container for practicality. Storage at 0°C suppressed decay and reduction in sugars and organic acids more efficiently than that at 3°C. Softening of fruit hardness was also suppressed depending on the variety. The reduction in sugars and organic acids did not affect strawberry palatability. Along with low temperature, long?term storage of strawberries also requires the use of film packaging, which prevents drying. Without film packaging, storage at both 0°C and 3°C decreased fresh weight significantly, resulting in loss of commercial value. In contrast, storage in film packaging decreased weight reduction to <5%, even after 28 days cold storage. Storage at 0°C suppressed decay, and reduction of sugars and organic acids more efficiently than that at 3°C. Along with low temperature, long?term storage of strawberries also requires the use of film packaging, which prevents drying. Without film packaging, storage at both 0°C and 3°C decreased fresh weight significantly, resulting in loss of commercial value. The proposed method can enhance the storage period of strawberries to 28 days or more.

Excellent Temperature-Control Based on Reversible Thermochromic Materials for Light-Driven Phase Change Materials System.

Project description:Light-driven phase change materials (PCMs) have received significant attention due to their capacity to convert visible light into thermal energy, storing it as latent heat. However, continuous photo-thermal conversion can cause the PCMs to reach high thermal equilibrium temperatures after phase transition. In our study, a novel light-driven phase change material system with temperature-control properties was constructed using a thermochromic compound. Thermochromic phase change materials (TC-PCMs) were prepared by introducing 2-anilino-6-dibutylamino-3-methylfluoran (ODB-2) and bisphenol A (BPA) into 1-hexadecanol (1-HD) in various proportions. Photo-thermal conversion performance was investigated with solar radiation (low power of 0.09 W/cm2) and a xenon lamp (at a high power of 0.14 W/cm2). The TC-PCMs showed a low equilibrium temperature due to variations in absorbance. Specifically, the temperature of TC-PCM180 (ODB-2, bisphenol A and 1-HD ratio 1:2:180) could stabilize at 54 °C approximately. TC-PCMs exhibited reversibility and repeatability after 20 irradiation and cooling cycles.

Light-Responsive Solid-Solid Phase Change Materials for Photon and Thermal Energy Storage.

Project description:We report a series of adamantane-functionalized azobenzenes that store photon and thermal energy via reversible photoisomerization in the solid state for molecular solar thermal (MOST) energy storage. The adamantane unit serves as a 3D molecular separator that enables the spatial separation of azobenzene groups and results in their facile switching even in the crystalline phase. Upon isomerization, the phase transition from crystalline to amorphous solid occurs and contributes to additional energy storage. The exclusively solid-state MOST compounds with solid-solid phase transition overcome a major challenge of solid-liquid phase transition materials that require encapsulation for practical applications.

Effects of stoichiometry on the transport properties of crystalline phase-change materials.

Project description:It has recently been shown that a metal-insulator transition due to disorder occurs in the crystalline state of the GeSb2Te4 phase-change compound. The transition is triggered by the ordering of the vacancies upon thermal annealing. In this work, we investigate the localization properties of the electronic states in selected crystalline (GeTe)x-(Sb2Te3)y compounds with varying GeTe content by large-scale density functional theory simulations. In our models, we also include excess vacancies, which are needed to account for the large carrier concentrations determined experimentally. We show that the models containing a high concentration of stoichiometric vacancies possess states at the Fermi energy localized inside vacancy clusters, as occurs for GeSb2Te4. On the other hand, the GeTe-rich models display metallic behavior, which stems from two facts: a) the tail of localized states shrinks due to the low probability of having sizable vacancy clusters, b) the excess vacancies shift the Fermi energy to the region of extended states. Hence, a stoichiometry-controlled metal-insulator transition occurs. In addition, we show that the localization properties obtained by scalar-relativistic calculations with gradient-corrected functionals are unaffected by the inclusion of spin-orbit coupling or the use of hybrid functionals.

Optically-controlled long-term storage and release of thermal energy in phase-change materials.

Project description:Thermal energy storage offers enormous potential for a wide range of energy technologies. Phase-change materials offer state-of-the-art thermal storage due to high latent heat. However, spontaneous heat loss from thermally charged phase-change materials to cooler surroundings occurs due to the absence of a significant energy barrier for the liquid-solid transition. This prevents control over the thermal storage, and developing effective methods to address this problem has remained an elusive goal. Herein, we report a combination of photo-switching dopants and organic phase-change materials as a way to introduce an activation energy barrier for phase-change materials solidification and to conserve thermal energy in the materials, allowing them to be triggered optically to release their stored latent heat. This approach enables the retention of thermal energy (about 200 J g-1) in the materials for at least 10 h at temperatures lower than the original crystallization point, unlocking opportunities for portable thermal energy storage systems.

Organic Phase Change Materials for Thermal Energy Storage: Influence of Molecular Structure on Properties.

Project description:Materials that change phase (e.g., via melting) can store thermal energy with energy densities comparable to batteries. Phase change materials will play an increasing role in reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, by scavenging thermal energy for later use. Therefore, it is useful to have summaries of phase change properties over a wide range of materials. In the present work, we review the relationship between molecular structure and trends in relevant phase change properties (melting temperature, and gravimetric enthalpy of fusion) for about 200 organic compounds from several chemical families, namely alkanes (paraffins), fatty acids, fatty alcohols, esters, diamines, dinitriles, diols, dioic acids, and diamides. We also review availability and cost, chemical compatibility, and thermal and chemical stabilities, to provide practical information for PCM selection. Compounds with even chain alkyl lengths generally give higher melting temperatures, store more thermal energy per unit mass due to more efficient packing, and are of lower cost than the comparable compounds with odd alkyl chains.

Microencapsulation of metal-based phase change material for high-temperature thermal energy storage.

Project description:Latent heat storage using alloys as phase change materials (PCMs) is an attractive option for high-temperature thermal energy storage. Encapsulation of these PCMs is essential for their successful use. However, so far, technology for producing microencapsulated PCMs (MEPCMs) that can be used above 500°C has not been established. Therefore, in this study, we developed Al-Si alloy microsphere MEPCMs covered by α-Al2O3 shells. The MEPCM was prepared in two steps: (1) the formation of an AlOOH shell on the PCM particles using a boehmite treatment, and (2) heat-oxidation treatment in an O2 atmosphere to form a stable α-Al2O3 shell. The MEPCM presented a melting point of 573°C and latent heat of 247 J g(-1). The cycling performance showed good durability. These results indicated the possibility of using MEPCM at high temperatures. The MEPCM developed in this study has great promise in future energy and chemical processes, such as exergy recuperation and process intensification.
