Project description:Supramolecular luminescent materials in water have attracted much interest due to their excellent tunability, multi-color emission, and environment-friendly behavior. However, hydrophobic chromophores are often affected by poor solubility and aggregation-caused quenching effects in aqueous media. Herein, we report a water-phase artificial light-harvesting system based on an AIE-type supramolecular polymer. Specifically, dispersed nanoparticles in water were prepared from an AIE chromophore-bridged ditopic ureidopyrimidinone (M) based supramolecular polymer with the assistance of surfactants. By co-assembling the hydrophobic chromophores NDI as energy acceptor into the nanocarriers, artificial light-harvesting systems (M-NDI) could be successfully constructed, exhibiting efficient energy transfer and high antenna effects. Furthermore, the spectral emission of the system could be continuously tuned with a relatively small number of acceptors. This work develops an efficient supramolecular light-harvesting system in water, which has potential applications in dynamic luminescent materials.

Project description:Water-mediated organic reactions significantly contribute to the protection of the environment. Desymmetrization reactions, which convert only one of the identical functional groups within one molecule, are cost-effective because of the low cost of the starting materials. In combination with these two merits, highly efficient and practical selective monohydrolysis reactions of symmetric diesters were previously reported. The products of these reactions are versatile building blocks. The mechanisms of this reaction are hypothesized to proceed through micellar aggregates in which the hydrophilic carboxylate anions formed by monohydrolysis are directed outward and the remaining hydrophobic groups are directed inward in governing the selectivities. Here, dynamic light scattering and electrophoretic light scattering experiments were performed for detection of the key intermediates in the reaction. These experiments revealed the existence of aggregates with negative charges on the surface in the mainly aqueous media, supporting the reaction mechanisms that control the high selectivities.

Project description:Herein, we report the crystal structure and characterization of mono-6-(l-aminopropanol)-deoxy-β-cyclodextrin (L n @β-CD). A highly efficient, in situ generated catalyst, PdCl2(L n @β-CD), was synthesized for palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions under mild reaction conditions, and the use of this catalyst in Suzuki cross-couplings was investigated. Low palladium loadings of 0.01 mol % PdCl2(L n @β-CD) (Pd accounted for approximately 8.4% of the catalyst by mass) were found to be highly efficient for Suzuki cross-couplings in water and afforded the corresponding biaryl compounds in excellent yields. The catalyst can be recycled and reused.

Project description:A study on room temperature Suzuki cross-coupling in an aqueous medium was carried out using a simple hydrophilic palladium (II) complex, trans-PdCl2(NH2CH2COOH)2 as catalyst in the presence of K2CO3 in air. This approach with a comparatively inexpensive and hydrophilic catalyst, mild reaction condition and aqueous media exhibits excellent catalytic activity towards the Suzuki coupling of aryl bromides and arylboronic acids, and good yields were obtained in the Suzuki coupling of activated aryl chlorides.

Project description:Photosynthesis is a process wherein the chromophores in plants and bacteria absorb light and convert it into chemical energy. To mimic this process, an emissive poly(ethylene glycol)-decorated tetragonal prismatic platinum(II) cage was prepared and used as the donor molecule to construct a light-harvesting system in water. Eosin Y was chosen as the acceptor because of its good spectral overlap with that of the metallacage, which is essential for the preparation of light-harvesting systems. Such a combination showed enhanced catalytic activity in catalyzing the cross-coupling hydrogen evolution reaction, as compared with eosin Y alone. This study offers a pathway for using the output energy from the light-harvesting system to mimic the whole photosynthetic process.

Project description:Peroxygenases offer attractive means to address challenges in selective oxyfunctionalisation chemistry. Despite their attractiveness, the application of peroxygenases in synthetic chemistry remains challenging due to their facile inactivation by the stoichiometric oxidant (H2O2). Often atom inefficient peroxide generation systems are required, which show little potential for large scale implementation. Here we show that visible light-driven, catalytic water oxidation can be used for in situ generation of H2O2 from water, rendering the peroxygenase catalytically active. In this way the stereoselective oxyfunctionalisation of hydrocarbons can be achieved by simply using the catalytic system, water and visible light.

Reaction efficiency with copper(II) sulfate and sodium iodide in an aqueous slurry under mild conditions is a manifold higher than in organic solvents. Water-soluble hosts of the cyclodextrin family solubilize the compounds in aqueous media and affect the reaction efficiency through conformation control and steric interactions. Computational chemistry and spectral titration provide information on the host-guest complex structure and insight into the mechanistic basis of the observed effects.

Project description:A hybrid for the visible-light-driven photocatalytic reduction of CO2 using methanol as a reducing agent was developed by combining two different types of photocatalysts: a Ru(II) dinuclear complex (RuBLRu') used for CO2 reduction is adsorbed onto Ag-loaded TaON (Ag/TaON) for methanol oxidation. Isotope experiments clearly showed that this hybrid photocatalyst mainly produced HCOOH (TN = 41 for 9 h irradiation) from CO2 and HCHO from methanol. Therefore, it converted light energy into chemical energy (?G° = +83.0 kJ/mol). Photocatalytic reaction proceeds by the stepwise excitation of Ag/TaON and the Ru dinuclear complex on Ag/TaON, similar to the photosynthesis Z-scheme.

Project description:The present study was performed to fabricate a titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanocatalyst with proper characteristics for the removal of some insecticides (dimethoate and methomyl) from aqueous media. A TiO2 catalyst of regular (TiO2-commercial-/H2O2/UV) or nano (TiO2-synthesized-/H2O2/UV) size was employed as an advanced oxidation process by combining it with H2O2 under light. Moreover, the total detoxification of insecticides after treatment with the most effective system (TiO2(s)/H2O2/UV) was also investigated through exploring the biochemical alterations and histopathological changes in the liver and kidneys of the treated rats. Interestingly, the present study reported that degradation rates of the examined insecticides were faster using the TiO2 catalyst of nano size. Complete degradation of the tested insecticides (100%) was achieved under the TiO2(s)/H2O2/UV system after 320 min of irradiation. The half-life values of the tested insecticides under H2O2/TiO2(c)/UV were 43.86 and 36.28 for dimethoate and methomyl, respectively, whereas under the H2O2/TiO2(c)/UV system, the half-life values were 27.72 and 19.52 min for dimethoate and methomyl, respectively. On the other hand, no significant changes were observed in the biochemical and histopathological parameters of rats administrated with water treated with TiO2(s)/H2O2/UV compared to the control, indicating low toxicity of the TiO2 nanocatalyst-. Altogether, the advanced oxidation processes using TiO2 nanocatalyst can be considered as a promising and effective remediation technology for the complete detoxification of methomyl and dimethoate in water. However, further future research is needed to identify the possible breakdown products and to verify the safety of the used nanomaterials.

Project description:Unlike their SCS analogues, SNS pincer complexes are poorly studied for their use in coupling reactions. Accordingly, a series of water soluble cationic Pd(II) SNS pincer complexes have been successfully synthesised and investigated in detail for their catalytic activity in Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reactions. By using only 0.5 mol % loading of the complexes, the coupling of inactivated aryl bromides and activated aryl chlorides with various boronic acids in water was achieved in excellent yields and the catalysts were found to be reusable for three cycles without a significant loss of activity. The investigation of the mechanism of the reaction revealed that a Pd(II) to Pd(IV) route is the more likely pathway which was further supported by computational studies.
