La-doped BaSnO3 for electromagnetic shielding transparent conductors.

ABSTRACT: In this work, we find that La-doped BaSnO₃ (BLSO) is shown to be a promising electromagnetic shielding transparent conductor. While films grown on industrially practical optoelectronic MgAl₂O₄ substrates have higher sheet resistance by three orders of magnitude than in previous reports, we show how to recover the sheet resistance close to the single-crystal level by use of an MgO template layer which enables high quality (001)-oriented BLSO epitaxial film growth on (001) MgAl₂O₄. There is a positive correlation between crystallinity and conductivity; high crystallinity minimizes scattering of free electrons. By applying this design principle to 5-20% doped films, we find that highly crystalline 5% La-doped BLSO films exhibit low sheet resistance of ~ 8.7 Ω ▯ ^-1, high visible transmittance of ~ 80%, and high X-band electromagnetic shielding effectiveness of ~ 25.9 dB, thus outperforming transparent conducting oxides films of Sn-doped In₂O₃ and SrMoO₃.

Silver Meshes for Record-Performance Transparent Electromagnetic Interference Shielding.

Project description:We present a simulation and experimental study of silver meshes to determine their performance for transparent electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding. Simulations were employed to study the effects of the silver mesh's width, pitch, and thickness on EMI shielding efficiency (SE) in the 8-18 GHz frequency range and transparency in the visible spectrum. We demonstrate a scalable, facile fabrication method that involves embedding meshes in glass by etching trenches in glass and filling and curing reactive particle-free silver ink in these trenches. Our silver meshes achieve 58.4 dB EMI SE with 83% visible light transmission and 48.3 dB EMI SE with 90.3% visible transmission. The combination of high-conductivity silver, small widths (1.3 to 5 μm), and large thicknesses (0.5 to 2.0 μm) enables the best performance of metal meshes as well as single-sided shielding materials for transparent EMI shielding, as reported in the literature.

Strong conductivity enhancement of La-doped BaSnO3 transparent films on Al2O3 with the assistance of templated epitaxy for electromagnetic shielding in extreme environments.

Project description:Transparent La-doped BaSnO3 (BLSO) epitaxial films grown on expensive perovskites show promising conductive properties. However, BLSO films on Al2O3 have a higher sheet resistance by two orders of magnitude. In this research, the sheet resistance of BLSO films is recovered to that of the single-crystalline level by growing (111)-oriented BLSO epitaxial films on (0001)Al2O3 with the assistance of (111)BaZrO3/MgO template bilayer. Their intriguing transparent conductive properties, including high electromagnetic shielding effectiveness (~ 13.2 dB at 10 GHz) and high stability at 700 °C, will promote stable optoelectronic applications in extreme environments with economic benefits.

Solution Combustion Synthesis of Hafnium-Doped Indium Oxide Thin Films for Transparent Conductors.

Project description:Indium oxide (In2O3)-based transparent conducting oxides (TCOs) have been widely used and studied for a variety of applications, such as optoelectronic devices. However, some of the more promising dopants (zirconium, hafnium, and tantalum) for this oxide have not received much attention, as studies have mainly focused on tin and zinc, and even fewer have been explored by solution processes. This work focuses on developing solution-combustion-processed hafnium (Hf)-doped In2O3 thin films and evaluating different annealing parameters on TCO's properties using a low environmental impact solvent. Optimized TCOs were achieved for 0.5 M% Hf-doped In2O3 when produced at 400 °C, showing high transparency in the visible range of the spectrum, a bulk resistivity of 5.73 × 10-2 Ω.cm, a mobility of 6.65 cm2/V.s, and a carrier concentration of 1.72 × 1019 cm-3. Then, these results were improved by using rapid thermal annealing (RTA) for 10 min at 600 °C, reaching a bulk resistivity of 3.95 × 10 -3 Ω.cm, a mobility of 21 cm2/V.s, and a carrier concentration of 7.98 × 1019 cm-3, in air. The present work brings solution-based TCOs a step closer to low-cost optoelectronic applications.

Far-infrared transparent conductors.

Project description:The long-standing challenge in designing far-infrared transparent conductors (FIRTC) is the combination of high plasma absorption edge (λp) and high conductivity (σ). These competing requirements are commonly met by tuning carrier concentration or/and effective carrier mass in a metal oxide/oxonate with low optical dielectric constant (εopt = 2-7). However, despite the high σ, the transparent band is limited to mid-infrared (λp < 5 μm). In this paper, we break the trade-off between high σ and λp by increasing the "so-called constant" εopt that has been neglected, and successfully develop the material family of FIRTC with εopt > 15 and λp > 15 μm. These FIRTC crystals are mainly octahedrally-coordinated heavy-metal chalcogenides and their solid solutions with shallow-level defects. Their high εopt relies on the formation of electron-deficiency multicenter bonds resulting in the great electron-polarization effect. The new FIRTC enables us to develop the first "continuous film" type far-infrared electromagnetic shielder that is unattainable using traditional materials. Therefore, this study may inaugurate a new era in far-infrared optoelectronics.

Flexible Embedded Metal Meshes by Sputter-Free Crack Lithography for Transparent Electrodes and Electromagnetic Interference Shielding.

Project description:A facile and novel fabrication method is demonstrated for creating flexible poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)-embedded silver meshes using crack lithography, reactive ion etching (RIE), and reactive silver ink. The crack width and spacing in a waterborne acrylic emulsion polymer are controlled by the thickness of the polymer and the applied stress due to heating and evaporation. Our innovative fabrication technique eliminates the need for sputtering and ensures stronger adhesion of the metal meshes to the PET substrate. Crack trench depths over 5 μm and line widths under 5 μm have been achieved. As a transparent electrode, our flexible embedded Ag meshes exhibit a visible transmission of 91.3% and sheet resistance of 0.54 Ω/sq as well as 93.7% and 1.4 Ω/sq. This performance corresponds to figures of merit (σDC/σOP) of 7500 and 4070, respectively. For transparent electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, the metal meshes achieve a shielding efficiency (SE) of 42 dB with 91.3% visible transmission and an EMI SE of 37.4 dB with 93.7% visible transmission. We demonstrate the highest transparent electrode performance of crack lithography approaches in the literature and the highest flexible transparent EMI shielding performance of all fabrication approaches in the literature. These metal meshes may have applications in transparent electrodes, EMI shielding, solar cells, and organic light-emitting diodes.

Layered metals as polarized transparent conductors.

Project description:The quest to improve transparent conductors balances two key goals: increasing electrical conductivity and increasing optical transparency. To improve both simultaneously is hindered by the physical limitation that good metals with high electrical conductivity have large carrier densities that push the plasma edge into the ultra-violet range. Technological solutions reflect this trade-off, achieving the desired transparencies only by reducing the conductor thickness or carrier density at the expense of a lower conductance. Here we demonstrate that highly anisotropic crystalline conductors offer an alternative solution, avoiding this compromise by separating the directions of conduction and transmission. We demonstrate that slabs of the layered oxides Sr2RuO4 and Tl2Ba2CuO6+δ are optically transparent even at macroscopic thicknesses >2 μm for c-axis polarized light. Underlying this observation is the fabrication of out-of-plane slabs by focused ion beam milling. This work provides a glimpse into future technologies, such as highly polarized and addressable optical screens.

Flexible, Transparent and Conductive Metal Mesh Films with Ultra-High FoM for Stretchable Heating and Electromagnetic Interference Shielding.

Project description:Despite the growing demand for transparent conductive films in smart and wearable electronics for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, achieving a flexible EMI shielding film, while maintaining a high transmittance remains a significant challenge. Herein, a flexible, transparent, and conductive copper (Cu) metal mesh film for EMI shielding is fabricated by self-forming crackle template method and electroplating technique. The Cu mesh film shows an ultra-low sheet resistance (0.18 Ω □-1), high transmittance (85.8%@550 nm), and ultra-high figure of merit (> 13,000). It also has satisfactory stretchability and mechanical stability, with a resistance increases of only 1.3% after 1,000 bending cycles. As a stretchable heater (ε > 30%), the saturation temperature of the film can reach over 110 °C within 60 s at 1.00 V applied voltage. Moreover, the metal mesh film exhibits outstanding average EMI shielding effectiveness of 40.4 dB in the X-band at the thickness of 2.5 μm. As a demonstration, it is used as a transparent window for shielding the wireless communication electromagnetic waves. Therefore, the flexible and transparent conductive Cu mesh film proposed in this work provides a promising candidate for the next-generation EMI shielding applications.

Pulsed-grown graphene for flexible transparent conductors.

Project description:In the race to find novel transparent conductors for next-generation optoelectronic devices, graphene is supposed to be one of the leading candidates, as it has the potential to satisfy all future requirements. However, the use of graphene as a truly transparent conductor remains a great challenge because its lowest sheet resistance demonstrated so far exceeds that of the commercially available indium tin oxide. The possible cause of low conductivity lies in its intrinsic growth process, which requires further exploration. In this work, I have approached this problem by controlling graphene nucleation during the chemical vapor deposition process as well as by adopting three distinct procedures, including bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide doping, post annealing, and flattening of graphene films. Additionally, van der Waals stacked graphene layers have been prepared to reduce the sheet resistance effectively. I have demonstrated an efficient and flexible transparent conductor with the extremely low sheet resistance of 40 Ω sq-1, high transparency (T r ∼90%), and high mechanical flexibility, making it suitable for electrode materials in future optoelectronic devices.

Films of Carbon Nanomaterials for Transparent Conductors.

Project description:The demand for transparent conductors is expected to grow rapidly as electronic devices, such as touch screens, displays, solid state lighting and photovoltaics become ubiquitous in our lives. Doped metal oxides, especially indium tin oxide, are the commonly used materials for transparent conductors. As there are some drawbacks to this class of materials, exploration of alternative materials has been conducted. There is an interest in films of carbon nanomaterials such as, carbon nanotubes and graphene as they exhibit outstanding properties. This article reviews the synthesis and assembly of these films and their post-treatment. These processes determine the film performance and understanding of this platform will be useful for future work to improve the film performance.
