Emissions of pesticides in the European Union: a new regional-level dataset.

ABSTRACT: We present a European Union (EU)-wide dataset of estimated quantities of active substances of plant protection product applied on crops (also called "emissions"). Our estimates are derived from data reported by eight EU countries and extrapolated to encompass all EU regions using regression models. These models consider both climate and agricultural land use data. This allows us to spatially represent pesticide use at NUTS Level 3 of the European statistical mapping units, and within various agricultural land cover classes in each region. We compare our estimates with aggregated data provided by EUROSTAT and with independent, detailed data for the United Kingdom, highlighting an error typically within one order of magnitude. Our estimates can provide insights into the distribution and patterns of pesticide use in the EU around the year 2015. The estimate is most reliable for Western and Southern Europe. Outside these regions, data scarcity makes extrapolation more uncertain, potentially limiting the ability to accurate depict regional variations in pesticide use.

Project description:BackgroundThe ability to measure regional health inequalities across Europe and to build adequate population health indices depends significantly on the availability of reliable and comparable data at the regional level. Within the scope of the EU-funded project EURO-HEALTHY, a Population Health Index (PHI) was built. This model aggregates 39 indicators considered relevant by experts and stakeholders to evaluate and monitor population health on the regional level within the European Union (269 regions). The aim of this research was to assess the data availability for those indicators. As a subsequent aim, an adequate protocol to overcome issues arising from missing data will be presented, as well as key messages for both national and European statistical authorities meant to improve data collection on population health.MethodsThe methodology for the study includes three consecutive phases: (i) assessing the data availability for the respective indicators at the regional level for the last year available (ii) applying a protocol for missing data and completing the database and (iii) developing a scoring system ranging from 0 (no data available; worst) to 1 (all data available; best) to evaluate the availability of data by indicator and EU region.ResultsAlthough the missing data on the set of the PHI indicators was significant, the mean availability score for the EURO-HEALTHY PHI indicators is 0.8 and the regional availability score is 0.7, which reveal the strength of the indicators as well as the data completeness protocol for missing data.ConclusionsThis study provides a comprehensive data availability assessment for population health indicators from multiple areas of concern, at the EU regional level. The results highlight that the data completeness protocol and availability scores are suitable tools to apply on any indicator's data source mapping. It also raises awareness to the urgent need for sub-national data in several domains and for closing the data gaps between and within countries. This will require policies clearly focused on improving equity between regions and a coordinated effort from the producers of data (the EU28 national statistics offices and EUROSTAT) and the stakeholders who design policies at EU, regional and local level.

Project description:In the current era of globalization, a clean environment remains a crucial factor for the health of the population. Thus, improving air quality is a major focus of environmental policies, as it affects all aspects of nature, including humans. For these reasons, it is appropriate to take into account the health risks posed by greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions released into the atmosphere. With regard to global GHG emissions, there are concerns about the loss of protection of the ozone layer and it is very likely that climate change can be expected, which multiplies the environmental threat and has potentially serious global consequences. In this regard, it is important to pay increased attention to emissions that enter the atmosphere, which include countless toxic substances. The aim of this study was to examine the associations between selected GHG emissions and the health of the European Union (EU) population represented by disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). This aim was achieved using several analytical procedures (descriptive analysis, correlation analysis, cluster analysis, and panel regression analysis), which included five environmental variables (carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) in CO2 equivalent, nitrous oxide (N2O) in CO2 equivalent, hydrofluorocarbons (HFC) in CO2 equivalent, sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) in CO2 equivalent) and one health variable (DALYs). An emphasis was placed on the use of quantitative methods. The results showed that CO2 emissions have a dominant position among selected GHG emissions. The revealed positive link between CO2 and DALYs indicated that a decrease in CO2 may be associated with a decrease in DALYs, but it is also true that this cannot be done without reducing emissions of other combustion products. In terms of CO2, the least positive scores were observed in Luxembourg and Estonia. Germany had the lowest score of DALYs, representing the most positive health outcome in the EU. In terms of total GHG emissions, Ireland and Luxembourg were considered to be less positive countries compared to the other analyzed countries. Countries should focus on reducing GHG emissions in general, but from a health point of view, reducing CO2 emissions seems to be the most beneficial.

Project description:BackgroundDrug-induced lung disease (DILD) is a considerable and potentially fatal adverse event with poorly understood risk factors. Large-scale, data-driven analyses investigating regional discrepancies in DILD incidence are lacking. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential association among DILD prevalence, regional differences and other factors based on large-scale data base.MethodsThis retrospective observational study analyzed spontaneous adverse event reports from the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database between January 2010 and December 2020. Regional disparities in DILD incidence were assessed among reports from the United States of America (USA), the European Union (EU), and Japan (JP). Using multivariate logistic regression accounting for age, sex, and reporting years, we calculated the reporting odds ratios (RORs) with 95% confidence intervals. Subgroup analyses were performed for different types of anticancer agents, including tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), and cytotoxic agents.ResultsRegional differences in RORs were observed for anticancer drugs in reports from JP and the EU compared with those from the USA (JP, ROR 4.432; EU, ROR 1.291) and for non-anticancer drugs (JP, ROR 3.481; EU, ROR 1.086). Significantly higher RORs were observed for all anticancer drug regimens reported in JP than in the USA (TKIs, ROR 3.274; ICIs, ROR 2.170; ADCs, ROR 2.335; cytotoxic agents, ROR 3.989). The EU reports exhibited higher RORs for TKIs and cytotoxic agents than the USA reports, with no significant differences in ICIs or ADCs (TKIs, ROR 1.679; ICIs, ROR 1.041; ADCs, ROR 1.046; cytotoxic agents, ROR 1.418).ConclusionThe prevalence of DILD in JP, the EU, and the USA differed. These findings have important implications in evaluating the safety profiles of drugs and patient safety in drug development and clinical practice. This study is the first to identify regional differences in DILDs using a large global database.
