Directed Self-Assembly of Diamond Networks in Triblock Terpolymer Films on Patterned Substrates.

ABSTRACT: Block copolymers (BCPs) are particularly effective in creating soft nanostructured templates for transferring complex 3D network structures into inorganic materials that are difficult to fabricate by other methods. However, achieving control of the local ordering within these 3D networks over large areas remains a significant obstacle to advancing material properties. Here, we address this challenge by directing the self-assembly of a 3D alternating diamond morphology by solvent vapor annealing of a triblock terpolymer film on a chemically patterned substrate. The hexagonal substrate patterns were designed to match a (111) plane of the diamond lattice. Commensurability between the sparse substrate pattern and the BCP lattice produced a uniformly ordered diamond network within the polymer film, as confirmed by a combination of atomic force microscopy and cross-sectional imaging using focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy. The successful replication of the complex and well-ordered 3D network structure in gold promises to advance optical metamaterials and has potential applications in nanophotonics.

Project description:The study of excited-state energy diffusion has had an important impact in the development and optimization of organic electronics. For instance, optimizing excited-state energy migration in the photoactive layer in an organic solar cell device has been shown to yield efficient solar energy conversion. Despite the crucial role that energy migration plays in molecular electronic device physics, there is still a great deal to be explored to establish how molecular orientation impacts energy diffusion mechanisms. In this work, we have synthesized a new library of solution-processable, Zn (alkoxycarbonyl)phenylporphyrins containing butyl (ZnTCB4PP), hexyl (ZnTCH4PP), 2-ethylhexyl (ZnTCEH4PP), and octyl (ZnTCO4PP) alkoxycarbonyl groups. We establish that, by varying the length of the peripheral alkyl chains on the metalloporphyrin macrocycle, preferential orientation and molecular self-assembly is observed in solution-processed thin films. The resultant arrangement of molecules consequently affects the electronic and photophysical characteristics of the metalloporphyrin thin films. The various molecular arrangements in the porphyrin thin films and their resultant impact were determined using UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence emission lifetimes, and X-ray diffraction in thin films. The films were doped with C60 quencher molecules and the change in fluorescence was measured to derive a relative quenching efficiency. Using emission decay, relative quenching efficiency, and dopant volume fraction as input, insights on exciton diffusion coefficient and exciton diffusion lengths were obtained from a Monte Carlo simulation. The octyl derivative (ZnTCO4PP) showed the strongest relative fluorescence quenching and, therefore, the highest exciton diffusion coefficient (5.29 × 10-3 cm2 s-1) and longest exciton diffusion length (~81 nm). The octyl derivative also showed the strongest out-of-plane stacking among the metalloporphyrins studied. This work demonstrates how molecular self-assembly can be used to modulate and direct exciton diffusion in solution-processable metalloporphyrin thin films engineered for optoelectronic and photonic applications.

Project description:Biofilm formation on the surfaces of indwelling medical devices has become a growing health threat due to the development of antimicrobial resistance to infection-causing bacteria. For example, ventilator-associated pneumonia caused by Pseudomonas and Staphylococci species has become a significant concern in treatment of patients during COVID-19 pandemic. Nanostructured surfaces with antifouling activity are of interest as a promising strategy to prevent bacterial adhesion without triggering drug resistance. In this study, we report a facile evaporative approach to prepare block copolymer film coatings with nanoscale topography that resist bacterial adhesion. The initial attachment of the target bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 to copolymer films as well as homopolymer films was evaluated by fluorescence microscopy. Significant reduction in bacterial adhesion (93-99% less) and area coverage (>92% less) on the copolymer films was observed compared with that on the control and homopolymer films [poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA)─only 40 and 23% less, respectively]. The surfaces of poly(styrene)-PMAA copolymer films with patterned nanoscale topography that contains sharp peaks ranging from 20 to 80 nm spaced at 30-50 nm were confirmed by atomic force microscopy and the corresponding surface morphology analysis. Investigation of the surface wettability and surface potential of polymer films assists in understanding the effect of surface properties on the bacterial attachment. Comparison of bacterial growth studies in polymer solutions with the growth studies on coatings highlights the importance of physical nanostructure in resisting bacterial adhesion, as opposed to chemical characteristics of the copolymers. Such self-patterned antifouling surface coatings, produced with a straightforward and energy-efficient approach, could provide a convenient and effective method to resist bacterial fouling on the surface of medical devices and reduce device-associated infections.
