Fracture and relaxation in dense cornstarch suspensions.

ABSTRACT: Dense suspensions exhibit the remarkable ability to switch dynamically and reversibly from a fluid-like to a solid-like, shear-jammed (SJ) state. Here, we show how this transition has important implications for the propensity for forming fractures. We inject air into bulk dense cornstarch suspensions and visualize the air invasion into the opaque material using time-resolved X-ray radiography. For suspensions with cornstarch mass fractions high enough to exhibit discontinuous shear thickening and shear jamming, we show that air injection leads to fractures in the material. For high mass fractions, these fractures grow quasistatically as rough cavities with fractured interfaces. For lower mass fractions, remarkably, the fractures can relax to smooth bubbles that then rise under buoyancy. We show that the onset of the relaxation occurs as the shear rate induced by the air cavity growth decreases below the critical shear rate denoting the onset of discontinuous shear thickening, which reveals a structural signature of the SJ state.

Behavior and mechanics of dense microgel suspensions.

Project description:Suspensions of soft and highly deformable microgels can be concentrated far more than suspensions of hard colloids, leading to their unusual mechanical properties. Microgels can accommodate compression in suspensions in a variety of ways such as interpenetration, deformation, and shrinking. Previous experiments have offered insightful, but somewhat conflicting, accounts of the behavior of individual microgels in compressed suspensions. We develop a mesoscale computational model to probe the behavior of compressed suspensions consisting of microgels with different architectures at a variety of packing fractions and solvent conditions. We find that microgels predominantly change shape and mildly shrink above random close packing. Interpenetration is only appreciable above space filling, remaining small relative to the mean distance between cross-links. At even higher packing fractions, microgels solely shrink. Remarkably, irrespective of the single-microgel properties, and whether the suspension concentration is changed via changing the particle number density or the swelling state of the particles, which can even result in colloidal gelation, the mechanics of the suspension can be quantified in terms of the single-microgel bulk modulus, which thus emerges as the correct mechanical measure for these type of soft-colloidal suspensions. Our results rationalize the many and varied experimental results, providing insights into the relative importance of effects defining the mechanics of suspensions comprising soft particles.

Droplet formation and scaling in dense suspensions.

Project description:When a dense suspension is squeezed from a nozzle, droplet detachment can occur similar to that of pure liquids. While in pure liquids the process of droplet detachment is well characterized through self-similar profiles and known scaling laws, we show here the simple presence of particles causes suspensions to break up in a new fashion. Using high-speed imaging, we find that detachment of a suspension drop is described by a power law; specifically we find the neck minimum radius, r(m), scales like near breakup at time τ = 0. We demonstrate data collapse in a variety of particle/liquid combinations, packing fractions, solvent viscosities, and initial conditions. We argue that this scaling is a consequence of particles deforming the neck surface, thereby creating a pressure that is balanced by inertia, and show how it emerges from topological constraints that relate particle configurations with macroscopic Gaussian curvature. This new type of scaling, uniquely enforced by geometry and regulated by the particles, displays memory of its initial conditions, fails to be self-similar, and has implications for the pressure given at generic suspension interfaces.

Dense bidisperse suspensions under non-homogeneous shear.

Project description:We study the rheological behaviour of bidisperse suspensions in three dimensions under a non-uniform shear flow, made by the superimposition of a linear shear and a sinusoidal disturbance. Our results show that (i) only a streamwise disturbance in the shear-plane alters the suspension dynamics by substantially reducing the relative viscosity, (ii) with the amplitude of the disturbance determining a threshold value for the effect to kick-in and its wavenumber controlling the amount of reduction and which of the two phases is affected. We show that, (iii) the rheological changes are caused by the effective separation of the two phases, with the large or small particles layering in separate regions. We provide a physical explanation of the phase separation process and of the conditions necessary to trigger it. We test the results in the whole flow curve, and we show that the mechanism remains substantially unaltered, with the only difference being the nature of the interactions between particles modified by the phase separation.

Fracture of Jammed Colloidal Suspensions.

Project description:Concentrated colloidal suspensions display dramatic rises in viscosity, leading to jamming and granulation, with increasing shear rate. It has been proposed that these effects result from inter particle friction, as lubrication forces are overcome. This suggests the jamming of concentrated colloidal suspensions should exhibit some shared phenomenology with macroscopic granular systems where friction leads to two different types of jammed state. Here we show that transient rheological measurements can be used to probe the processes of granulation in concentrated colloidal suspensions. Our results support the idea that frictional contacts are created between jammed particles. The jamming behaviour displays two qualitatively different regimes separated by a critical strain rate with qualitatively different types of fracture/break up behaviour. In the lower strain rate regime, it is found that vibrations can be used to control jamming and granulation, resulting in a flowable fluid.

Localized stress fluctuations drive shear thickening in dense suspensions.

Project description:Dense particulate suspensions exhibit a dramatic increase in average viscosity above a critical, material-dependent shear stress. This thickening changes from continuous to discontinuous as the concentration is increased. Using direct measurements of spatially resolved surface stresses in the continuous thickening regime, we report the existence of clearly defined dynamic localized regions of substantially increased stress that appear intermittently at stresses above the critical stress. With increasing applied stress, these regions occupy an increasing fraction of the system, and the increase accounts quantitatively for the observed shear thickening. The regions represent high-viscosity fluid phases, with a size determined by the distance between the shearing surfaces and a viscosity that is nearly independent of shear rate but that increases rapidly with concentration. Thus, we find that continuous shear thickening arises from increasingly frequent localized discontinuous transitions between distinct fluid phases with widely differing viscosities.

Designing Stress-Adaptive Dense Suspensions Using Dynamic Covalent Chemistry.

Project description:The non-Newtonian behaviors of dense suspensions are central to their use in technological and industrial applications and arise from a network of particle-particle contacts that dynamically adapt to imposed shear. Reported herein are studies aimed at exploring how dynamic covalent chemistry between particles and the polymeric solvent can be used to tailor such stress-adaptive contact networks, leading to their unusual rheological behaviors. Specifically, a room temperature dynamic thia-Michael bond is employed to rationally tune the equilibrium constant (K eq) of the polymeric solvent to the particle interface. It is demonstrated that low K eq leads to shear thinning, while high K eq produces antithixotropy, a rare phenomenon where the viscosity increases with shearing time. It is proposed that an increase in K eq increases the polymer graft density at the particle surface and that antithixotropy primarily arises from partial debonding of the polymeric graft/solvent from the particle surface and the formation of polymer bridges between particles. Thus, the implementation of dynamic covalent chemistry provides a new molecular handle with which to tailor the macroscopic rheology of suspensions by introducing programmable time dependence. These studies open the door to energy-absorbing materials that not only sense mechanical inputs and adjust their dissipation as a function of time or shear rate but also can switch between these two modalities on demand.

Origin of polar order in dense suspensions of phototactic micro-swimmers.

Project description:A main question for the study of collective motion in living organisms is the origin of orientational polar order, i.e., how organisms align and what are the benefits of such collective behaviour. In the case of micro-organisms swimming at a low Reynolds number, steric repulsion and long-range hydrodynamic interactions are not sufficient to explain a homogeneous polar order state in which the direction of motion is aligned. An external symmetry-breaking guiding field such as a mechanism of taxis appears necessary to understand this phonemonon. We have investigated the onset of polar order in the velocity field induced by phototaxis in a suspension of a motile micro-organism, the algae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, for density values above the limit provided by the hydrodynamic approximation of a force dipole model. We show that polar order originates from a combination of both the external guiding field intensity and the population density. In particular, we show evidence for a linear dependence of a phototactic guiding field on cell density to determine the polar order for dense suspensions and demonstrate the existence of a density threshold for the origin of polar order. This threshold represents the density value below which cells undergoing phototaxis are not able to maintain a homogeneous polar order state and marks the transition to ordered collective motion. Such a transition is driven by a noise dominated phototactic reorientation where the noise is modelled as a normal distribution with a variance that is inversely proportional to the guiding field strength. Finally, we discuss the role of density in dense suspensions of phototactic micro-swimmers.

A general constitutive model for dense, fine-particle suspensions validated in many geometries.

Project description:Fine-particle suspensions (such as cornstarch mixed with water) exhibit dramatic changes in viscosity when sheared, producing fascinating behaviors that captivate children and rheologists alike. Examination of these mixtures in simple flow geometries suggests intergranular repulsion and its influence on the frictional nature of granular contacts is central to this effect-for mixtures at rest or shearing slowly, repulsion prevents frictional contacts from forming between particles, whereas when sheared more forcefully, granular stresses overcome the repulsion allowing particles to interact frictionally and form microscopic structures that resist flow. Previous constitutive studies of these mixtures have focused on particular cases, typically limited to 2D, steady, simple shearing flows. In this work, we introduce a predictive and general, 3D continuum model for this material, using mixture theory to couple the fluid and particle phases. Playing a central role in the model, we introduce a microstructural state variable, whose evolution is deduced from small-scale physical arguments and checked with existing data. Our space- and time-dependent model is implemented numerically in a variety of unsteady, nonuniform flow configurations where it is shown to accurately capture a variety of key behaviors: 1) the continuous shear-thickening (CST) and discontinuous shear-thickening (DST) behavior observed in steady flows, 2) the time-dependent propagation of "shear jamming fronts," 3) the time-dependent propagation of "impact-activated jamming fronts," and 4) the non-Newtonian, "running on oobleck" effect, wherein fast locomotors stay afloat while slow ones sink.

Tunable solidification of cornstarch under impact: How to make someone walking on cornstarch sink.

Project description:Hundreds of YouTube videos show people running on cornstarch suspensions demonstrating that dense shear thickening suspensions solidify under impact. Such processes are mimicked by impacting and pulling out a plate from the surface of a thickening cornstarch suspension. Here, using both experiments and simulations, we show that applying fast oscillatory shear transverse to the primary impact or extension directions tunes the degree of solidification. The forces acting on the impacting surface are modified by varying the dimensionless ratio of the orthogonal shear to the compression and extension flow rate. Simulations show varying this parameter changes the number of particle contacts governing solidification. To demonstrate this strategy in an untethered context, we show the sinking speed of a cylinder dropped onto the suspension varies markedly by changing this dimensionless ratio. These results suggest applying orthogonal shear while people are running on cornstarch would de-solidify the suspension and cause them to sink.

Twist-Bend Stage in the Relaxation of Sheared Chiral Nematic Suspensions of Cellulose Nanocrystals.

Project description:Aqueous suspensions of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), prepared from natural cellulose by sulfuric acid hydrolysis, form stable chiral nematic suspensions above a critical CNC concentration. The chiral nematic organization may be preserved in films prepared from the suspensions by evaporation. However, shrinkage, gelation, and shear during film formation impair the optical properties of the dry film. In this article, we report an unusual behavior for a sample in which gelation occurred before the sample reached iridescent pitch values. In attempting to decouple changes in texture due to evaporation from those due to shear relaxation effects for this sample, we observed a transitory nematic-like texture that was induced by shear during the preparation of the sample for polarized light microscopy. We propose that the transition between chiral nematic and nematic structures involves a twist-bend-like intermediate and not an untwisting of the chiral nematic phase.
