The Tat proteins of HIV-1 and simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) are essential for activating viral transcription. In addition, Tat stimulates nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) signaling pathways to regulate viral gene expression although its molecular mechanism is unclear.
