A dataset of global tropical cyclone wind and surface wave measurements from buoy and satellite platforms.

ABSTRACT: There are now a range of potential data sources for wind and surface wave conditions within tropical cyclones. These sources include: in situ buoy data and remote sensing data from satellite altimeters, scatterometers, and radiometers. In addition, data providing estimates of tropical cyclone tracks and wind field parameters are available from best track archives. The present dataset brings together this information in a single archive, providing the available data for each tropical cyclone from each of the data sources in a single file. The data consists of observations in a total of 2927 global tropical cyclones over the period from 1985 to 2017. Global statistics of the observations are provided, along with data on the geographic distribution of tropical cyclones within the database.

Estimation of global tropical cyclone wind speed probabilities using the STORM dataset.

Project description:Tropical cyclones (TC) are one of the deadliest and costliest natural disasters. To mitigate the impact of such disasters, it is essential to know extreme exceedance probabilities, also known as return periods, of TC hazards. In this paper, we demonstrate the use of the STORM dataset, containing synthetic TCs equivalent of 10,000 years under present-day climate conditions, for the calculation of TC wind speed return periods. The temporal length of the STORM dataset allows us to empirically calculate return periods up to 10,000 years without fitting an extreme value distribution. We show that fitting a distribution typically results in higher wind speeds compared to their empirically derived counterparts, especially for return periods exceeding 100-yr. By applying a parametric wind model to the TC tracks, we derive return periods at 10 km resolution in TC-prone regions. The return periods are validated against observations and previous studies, and show a good agreement. The accompanying global-scale wind speed return period dataset is publicly available and can be used for high-resolution TC risk assessments.

Global tropical cyclone extreme wave height climatology.

Project description:A global study of extreme value (1 in 100-year return period) tropical cyclone generated waves is conducted across all tropical cyclone basins. The study uses a 1000 year tropical cyclone synthetic track database to force a validated parametric wave model. The resulting distributions of extreme significant wave height show that values in the North Atlantic and Western Pacific basins are the largest globally. This is partly due to the relative intensities and frequencies of occurrence of storms in these basins but also because the typical velocities of forward movement of storms are larger and hence can sustain the generation of larger waves. These larger values of velocity of forward movement tend to occur at higher latitudes. As a result, in both of these basins the largest extreme waves occur at higher latitudes than the maximum tropical cyclone winds. In all other tropical cyclone basins, storms tend to propagate more east-west and hence the maximum values of extreme significant wave height and wind speed occur at comparable latitudes.

Dataset of outer tropical cyclone size from a radial wind profile.

Project description:Pérez-Alarcón et al. [1] developed a comparative climatology of the outer radius of tropical cyclones (TCs) from several radial wind profiles. They showed that the Willoughby et al. (2006) (W06) profile can be used to reproduce the TC tangential wind speed; thus, this profile is skilful for estimating the TC outer radius. Here, we present a database of TC sizes estimated from the W06 radial wind profile in each cyclogenetic basin worldwide. The database incorporates the critical wind radii, where the tangential wind speed is approximately 17.5 ms-1 (R34), 26 ms-1 (R50), 33 ms-1 (R64), and 51 ms-1 (R100), estimated by the W06 profile. The database has a comma-delimited text format with six-hour information on the location, maximum wind speed, central pressure, and the different TC metrics mentioned above. This database has a similar structure to that of the Atlantic Hurricane Database (HURDAT2) of the National Hurricane Center. The database presented here is applicable to studies on TC storm surge risks as well as to the determination of the sources and sinks of atmospheric moisture related to tropical cyclogenesis processes.

Tropical cyclone dataset for a high-resolution global nonhydrostatic atmospheric simulation.

Project description:This dataset is a time series of tropical cyclones simulated using the high-resolution Nonhydrostatic Icosahedral Atmospheric Model (NICAM). By tracking tropical cyclones from 30 years of simulation data, 2,463 tracks that include the life stages of precursors (pre-TCs), tropical cyclones (TCs), and post-tropical cyclones (post-TCs), if any, were extracted. Each track data includes the time, latitude, longitude, maximum wind speed, minimum pressure, elapsed time since onset, and life-stage label of the tropical cyclone. The numbers of steps (6 h) for pre-TCs, TCs, and post-TCs were 45,288, 55,206, and 37,312, respectively. The dataset for each step also consists of atmospheric field data of multiple physical quantities, such as outgoing longwave radiation at the top-of-the-atmosphere, sea level pressure, sea surface temperature, specific humidity at 600 hPa, and zonal and meridional winds at 850 and 200 hPa over a 1000 km2 area that includes a tropical cyclone at its center. This dataset can be used to develop machine-learning models for the detection, intensity prediction, and cyclogenesis prediction of tropical cyclones.

Generation of a global synthetic tropical cyclone hazard dataset using STORM.

Project description:Over the past few decades, the world has seen substantial tropical cyclone (TC) damages, with the 2017 Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria entering the top-5 costliest Atlantic hurricanes ever. Calculating TC risk at a global scale, however, has proven difficult given the limited temporal and spatial information on TCs across much of the global coastline. Here, we present a novel database on TC characteristics on a global scale using a newly developed synthetic resampling algorithm we call STORM (Synthetic Tropical cyclOne geneRation Model). STORM can be applied to any meteorological dataset to statistically resample and model TC tracks and intensities. We apply STORM to extracted TCs from 38 years of historical data from IBTrACS to statistically extend this dataset to 10,000 years of TC activity. We show that STORM preserves the TC statistics as found in the original dataset. The STORM dataset can be used for TC hazard assessments and risk modeling in TC-prone regions.

Global changes in extreme tropical cyclone wave heights under projected future climate conditions.

Project description:Tropical cyclone risks are expected to increase with climate change. One such risk is extreme ocean waves generated by surface winds from these systems. We use synthetic databases of both historical (1980-2017) and future (2015-2050) tropical cyclone tracks to generate wind fields and force a computationally efficient wave model to estimate significant wave heights across all global tropical cyclone basins. These data are then used to estimate 1 in 100-year return period significant wave height for both the historical period and the future under an SSP585 high emissions scenario. The results show that by 2050, there are projected increases in 100-year significant wave height of up to 1.5 m (10%) in the Eastern and Western Pacific, South Indian and South Pacific Ocean basins. The North Atlantic basin shows no consistent trend, whilst the North Indian basin (particularly the Bay of Bengal) shows a statistically significant decrease in extreme significant wave height. The results represent the first attempt to quantify the magnitude of expected changes in extreme wave height conditions generated by extreme tropical cyclones across all tropical cyclone basins.

Physical understanding of the tropical cyclone wind-pressure relationship.

Project description:The relationship between the two common measures of tropical cyclone intensity, the central pressure deficit and the peak near-surface wind speed, is a long-standing problem in tropical meteorology that has been approximated empirically yet lacks physical understanding. Here we provide theoretical grounding for this relationship. We first demonstrate that the central pressure deficit is highly predictable from the low-level wind field via gradient wind balance. We then show that this relationship reduces to a dependence on two velocity scales: the maximum azimuthal-mean azimuthal wind speed and half the product of the Coriolis parameter and outer storm size. This simple theory is found to hold across a hierarchy of models spanning reduced-complexity and Earth-like global simulations and observations. Thus, the central pressure deficit is an intensity measure that combines maximum wind speed, storm size, and background rotation rate. This work has significant implications for both fundamental understanding and risk analysis, including why the central pressure better explains historical economic damages than does maximum wind speed.

Extreme air-sea turbulent fluxes during tropical cyclone Barijat observed by a newly designed drifting buoy.

Project description:Using in situ observations collected by a drifting air-sea interface buoy (DrIB) in the northern South China Sea from August 30 to September 13, 2018, the extreme air-sea turbulent fluxes that occurred from September 8 to 13 during tropical cyclone (TC) Barijat were investigated. The most striking features were substantial increases in momentum and heat fluxes, with maximum increases of 10.8 m s-1 in the wind speed (WS), 0.73 N m-2 in the wind stress, 68.1 W m-2 in the sensible heat fluxes (SH) and 258.8 W m-2 in the latent heat fluxes (LH). The maximum WS, wind stress, SH and LH values amounted to 15.3 m s-1, 0.8 N m-2, 70.9 W m-2 and 329.9 W m-2, respectively. Using these new DrIB observations, the performance of two state-of-the-art, high-resolution reanalysis products, ERA5 and MERRA2, was assessed. The consistency of the observed values with ERA5 was slightly better than with MERRA2, reflected in higher correlations but both products underestimated the WS during TC conditions. In calm weather conditions, the turbulent heat fluxes were overestimated, because they simulated a too dry and cold atmospheric state, enhancing the air-sea differences in temperature and humidity. Considering that an accurate representation of the air-sea turbulent and momentum fluxes is essential for understanding and predicting ocean and atmospheric variability, our findings indicate that more high-quality temperature and relative humidity observations are required to evaluate and improve existing reanalysis products.

Global warming changes tropical cyclone translation speed.

Project description:Slow-moving tropical cyclones (TCs) can cause heavy rain because of their duration of influence. Combined with expected increase in rain rates associated with TCs in a warmer climate, there is growing interest in TC translation speed in the past and future. Here we present that a slowdown trend of the translation speed is not simulated for the period 1951-2011 based on historical model simulations. We also find that the annual-mean translation speed could increase under global warming. Although previous studies show large uncertainties in the future projections of TC characteristics, our model simulations show that the average TC translation speed at higher latitudes becomes smaller in a warmer climate, but the relative frequency of TCs at higher latitudes increases. Since the translation speed is much larger in the extratropics, the increase in the relative frequency of TCs at higher latitudes compensates the reduction of the translation speed there, leading to a global mean increase in TC translation speed.

Global increase in tropical cyclone rain rate.

Project description:Theoretical models of the potential intensity of tropical cyclones (TCs) suggest that TC rainfall rates should increase in a warmer environment but limited observational evidence has been studied to test these hypotheses on a global scale. The present study explores the general trends of TC rainfall rates based on a 19-year (1998-2016) time series of continuous observational data collected by the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission and the Global Precipitation Measurement mission. Overall, observations exhibit an increasing trend in the average TC rainfall rate of about 1.3% per year, a fact that is contributed mainly by the combined effect of the reduction in the inner-core rainfall rate with the increase in rainfall rate on the rainband region. We found that the increasing trend is more pronounced in the Northwestern Pacific and North Atlantic than in other global basins, and it is relatively uniform for all TC intensities. Further analysis shows that these trends are associated with increases in sea surface temperature and total precipitable water in the TC environment.
