Global increase in tropical cyclone rain rate.

ABSTRACT: Theoretical models of the potential intensity of tropical cyclones (TCs) suggest that TC rainfall rates should increase in a warmer environment but limited observational evidence has been studied to test these hypotheses on a global scale. The present study explores the general trends of TC rainfall rates based on a 19-year (1998-2016) time series of continuous observational data collected by the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission and the Global Precipitation Measurement mission. Overall, observations exhibit an increasing trend in the average TC rainfall rate of about 1.3% per year, a fact that is contributed mainly by the combined effect of the reduction in the inner-core rainfall rate with the increase in rainfall rate on the rainband region. We found that the increasing trend is more pronounced in the Northwestern Pacific and North Atlantic than in other global basins, and it is relatively uniform for all TC intensities. Further analysis shows that these trends are associated with increases in sea surface temperature and total precipitable water in the TC environment.

Increase in tropical cyclone rain rate with translation speed.

Project description:In general, tropical cyclone (TC) rainfall accumulation usually decreases with faster TC translation speed but increases with heavier rain rate. However, how the TC rain rate changes with translation speed is unclear. Here we show that, in all TC basins, the average TC rain rate significantly increases with translation speed. On average, the rain rate in a fast-moving TC is 24% higher than in a slow one. This difference increases with TC intensity, with category 3-5 TCs having a 42% increase while tropical depressions exhibit only a 9% increase. The increase in the average TC rain rate with translation speed is mainly caused by the TC net inflow in the lower troposphere, as well as vertical wind shear. These findings have important implications not only for a deeper understanding of rain rate changes in a translating TC but also for short-term forecasts of TC rainfall and disaster preparedness.

Global increase in tropical cyclone ocean surface waves.

Project description:The long-term changes of ocean surface waves associated with tropical cyclones (TCs) are poorly observed and understood. Here, we present the global trend analysis of TC waves for 1979-2022 based on the ERA5 wave reanalysis. The maximum height and the area of the TC wave footprint in the six h reanalysis have increased globally by about 3%/decade and 6%/decade, respectively. The TC wave energy transferred at the interface from the atmosphere to the ocean has increased globally by about 9%/decade, which is three times larger than that reported for all waves. The global energy changes are mostly driven by the growing area of the wave footprint. Our study shows that the TC-associated wave hazard has increased significantly and these changes are larger than those of the TC maximum wind speed. This suggests that the wave hazard should be a concern in the future.

Classification of tropical cyclone rain patterns using convolutional autoencoder.

Project description:Heavy rainfall produced by tropical cyclones (TCs) frequently causes wide-spread damage. TCs have different patterns of rain depending on their development stage, geographical location, and surrounding environmental conditions. However, an objective system for classifying TC rain patterns has not yet been established. This study objectively classifies rain patterns of North Atlantic TCs using a Convolutional Autoencoder (CAE). The CAE is trained with 11,991 images of TC rain rates obtained from satellite precipitation estimates during 2000-2020. The CAE consists of an encoder which compresses the original TC rain image into low-dimensional features and a decoder which reconstructs an image from the compressed features. Then, TC rain images are classified by applying a k-means method to the compressed features from the CAE. We identified six TC rain patterns over the North Atlantic and confirmed that they exhibited unique characteristics in their spatial patterns (e.g., area, asymmetry, dispersion) and geographical locations. Furthermore, the characteristics of rain patterns in each cluster were closely related to storm intensity and surrounding environmental conditions of moisture supply, vertical wind shear, and land interaction. This classification of TC rain patterns and further investigations into their evolution and spatial variability can improve forecasts and help mitigate damage from these systems.

A potential explanation for the global increase in tropical cyclone rapid intensification

Project description:Tropical cyclone rapid intensification events often cause destructive hurricane landfalls because they are associated with the strongest storms and forecasts with the highest errors. Multi-decade observational datasets of tropical cyclone behavior have recently enabled documentation of upward trends in tropical cyclone rapid intensification in several basins. However, a robust anthropogenic signal in global intensification trends and the physical drivers of intensification trends have yet to be identified. To address these knowledge gaps, here we compare the observed trends in intensification and tropical cyclone environmental parameters to simulated natural variability in a high-resolution global climate model. In multiple basins and the global dataset, we detect a significant increase in intensification rates with a positive contribution from anthropogenic forcing. Furthermore, thermodynamic environments around tropical cyclones have become more favorable for intensification, and climate models show anthropogenic warming has significantly increased the probability of these changes. This study shows intensification rates of tropical cyclones around the world have significantly increased, and environmental conditions around storms are becoming more favorable. Human-caused climate change is contributing to both trends.

Global increase in major tropical cyclone exceedance probability over the past four decades.

Project description:Theoretical understanding of the thermodynamic controls on tropical cyclone (TC) wind intensity, as well as numerical simulations, implies a positive trend in TC intensity in a warming world. The global instrumental record of TC intensity, however, is known to be heterogeneous in both space and time and is generally unsuitable for global trend analysis. To address this, a homogenized data record based on satellite data was previously created for the period 1982-2009. The 28-y homogenized record exhibited increasing global TC intensity trends, but they were not statistically significant at the 95% confidence level. Based on observed trends in the thermodynamic mean state of the tropical environment during this period, however, it was argued that the 28-y period was likely close to, but shorter than, the time required for a statistically significant positive global TC intensity trend to appear. Here the homogenized global TC intensity record is extended to the 39-y period 1979-2017, and statistically significant (at the 95% confidence level) increases are identified. Increases and trends are found in the exceedance probability and proportion of major (Saffir-Simpson categories 3 to 5) TC intensities, which is consistent with expectations based on theoretical understanding and trends identified in numerical simulations in warming scenarios. Major TCs pose, by far, the greatest threat to lives and property. Between the early and latter halves of the time period, the major TC exceedance probability increases by about 8% per decade, with a 95% CI of 2 to 15% per decade.

Recent global decrease in the inner-core rain rate of tropical cyclones.

Project description:Heavy rainfall is one of the major aspects of tropical cyclones (TC) and can cause substantial damages. Here, we show, based on satellite observational rainfall data and numerical model results, that between 1999 and 2018, the rain rate in the outer region of TCs has been increasing, but it has decreased significantly in the inner-core. Globally, the TC rain rate has increased by 8 ± 4% during this period, which is mainly contributed by an increase in rain rate in the TC outer region due to increasing water vapor availability in the atmosphere with rising surface temperature. On the other hand, the rain rate in the inner-core of TCs has decreased by 24 ± 3% during the same period. The decreasing trend in the inner-core rain rate likely results mainly from an increase in atmospheric stability.

Global tropical cyclone extreme wave height climatology.

Project description:A global study of extreme value (1 in 100-year return period) tropical cyclone generated waves is conducted across all tropical cyclone basins. The study uses a 1000 year tropical cyclone synthetic track database to force a validated parametric wave model. The resulting distributions of extreme significant wave height show that values in the North Atlantic and Western Pacific basins are the largest globally. This is partly due to the relative intensities and frequencies of occurrence of storms in these basins but also because the typical velocities of forward movement of storms are larger and hence can sustain the generation of larger waves. These larger values of velocity of forward movement tend to occur at higher latitudes. As a result, in both of these basins the largest extreme waves occur at higher latitudes than the maximum tropical cyclone winds. In all other tropical cyclone basins, storms tend to propagate more east-west and hence the maximum values of extreme significant wave height and wind speed occur at comparable latitudes.

Global warming changes tropical cyclone translation speed.

Project description:Slow-moving tropical cyclones (TCs) can cause heavy rain because of their duration of influence. Combined with expected increase in rain rates associated with TCs in a warmer climate, there is growing interest in TC translation speed in the past and future. Here we present that a slowdown trend of the translation speed is not simulated for the period 1951-2011 based on historical model simulations. We also find that the annual-mean translation speed could increase under global warming. Although previous studies show large uncertainties in the future projections of TC characteristics, our model simulations show that the average TC translation speed at higher latitudes becomes smaller in a warmer climate, but the relative frequency of TCs at higher latitudes increases. Since the translation speed is much larger in the extratropics, the increase in the relative frequency of TCs at higher latitudes compensates the reduction of the translation speed there, leading to a global mean increase in TC translation speed.

Decreasing global tropical cyclone frequency in CMIP6 historical simulations.

Project description:The impact of anthropogenic global warming on tropical cyclone (TC) frequency remains a challenging issue, partly due to a relatively short period of reliable observational TC records and inconsistencies in climate model simulations. Using TC detection from 20 CMIP6 historical simulations, we show that the majority (75%) of these models show a decrease in global-scale TC frequency from 1850 to 2014. We demonstrated that this result is largely explained by weakened mid-tropospheric upward motion in CMIP6 models over the Pacific and Atlantic main development regions. The reduced upward motion is due to a zonal circulation adjustment and shifts in Intertropical Convergence Zone in response to global warming. In the South Indian Ocean, reduced TC frequency is mainly due to the decreased survival rate of TC seeds because of an increased saturation deficit in a warming climate. Our analysis highlights global warming's potential impact on the historical decrease in global TC frequency.

Tropical cyclone activity over western North Pacific favors Arctic sea ice increase.

Project description:Teleconnections between the tropics and the Arctic have attracted a lot of scientific interest. However, the mechanisms by which tropical synoptic-scale systems influence the variability of Arctic sea ice remain unknown. In this study, we highlight the impacts of tropical cyclone (TC) activity over the western North Pacific (WNP) on Arctic Sea Ice Concentration (SIC) using observational evidence and climate model simulation experiments. Our findings demonstrate significant positive correlations between Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE) in the WNP and SIC in the Arctic-Pacific Sector (APS), particularly when considering a 30-day lag. The TC activity over the WNP induces Rossby wave train propagation towards the Arctic, leading to anomalous cyclonic circulation over the upper troposphere of the APS. The anomalous cyclone over the Arctic, on one hand, signifies the deepening of the Arctic polar vortex and diminishes adiabatic warming over the APS, subsequently inducing cooling and drying of the lower Arctic air. This process reduces downward longwave radiation, promoting an increase in September APS SIC. On the other hand, the anomalous cyclone over the Arctic hinders the export of sea ice and local melting processes throughout the Fram Strait. These findings contribute to a deeper comprehension of tropics-Arctic teleconnections.
