Eco-friendly and sustainable basil seed hydrogel-loaded copper hydroxide-based catalyst for the synthesis of propargylamines and tetrazoles.

ABSTRACT: The broad use of propargyl amines and tetrazoles in pharmaceutical applications presents a well-established challenge. Their synthesis relies heavily on catalysis, which, in turn, has been hindered by the scarcity of stable and practical catalysts. In response to this issue, we have developed an environmentally friendly and sustainable catalyst by infusing copper hydroxide into basil seed hydrogel (Cu(OH)₂-BSH), creating a 3D nanoreactor support structure. To verify the structural, physical, chemical, and morphological properties of the prepared samples, a comprehensive analysis using various techniques, including FT-IR, EDX, FE-SEM, TEM, XRD, BET, TGA, and XPS, were conducted. The results not only confirmed the presence of Cu(OH)₂ but also revealed a porous structure, facilitating faster diffusion and providing a substantial number of active sites. This catalyst boasts a high surface area and can be easily recovered, making it a cost-effective, safe, and readily available option. This catalyst was applied to the synthesis of propargyl amines and tetrazoles through multi-component reactions (MCRs), achieving excellent results under mild conditions and in a remarkably short timeframe. Consequently, this work offers a straightforward and practical approach for designing and synthesizing metal hydroxides and 3D hydrogels for use in heterogeneous catalysis during organic syntheses. This can be achieved using basic and affordable starting materials at the molecular level.

Project description:ObjectivesThe current study aimed to investigate how regulatory frameworks and policies are used to support the use of sustainable medicines within the pharmaceutical sector.MethodsThe Scopus database was searched to retrieve papers. Advanced search tool of the Scopus online database was used focused on the papers that have the search query included in their titles. Data analysis incorporated bibliometric indicators like publication counts and trends, visualized through VOSviewer software version 1.6.20.Key findingsA total of 43 publications on Sustainable Medicines Use were found between 2000 and 2024. Leading countries in publication output on sustainable medicines use were United Kingdom, United States, India, Italy, Portugal, and Switzerland, indicating their collaborative relationships and publication volumes. A total of 92 institutions have been involved in research on Sustainable Medicines Use. Key institutions such as the Faculty of Engineering and the Laboratory for Process and Environmental Engineering, Lowell Center for Sustainable Production, Greiner Environmental Inc., and the University of Florence are prominently featured, indicating their significant contributions to research in this area. Key journals such as the "Journal of Cleaner Production," "Business Strategy and the Environment," "Chemical Engineering Transactions," "Benchmarking," and "Lecture Notes in Mechanical Engineering" are prominently featured. The retrieved articles have been cited an average count of 22.26. Achieving sustainable pharmaceutical practices that support worldwide environmental and public health objectives requires sustained research, policy development, and international cooperation. The area needs to keep developing and implementing sustainable methods like green chemistry to decrease environmental harm and improve sustainability. Furthermore, collaborations among academia, industry, and international organizations are essential to progress and interchange effective strategies.

Project description:Malva parviflora L. is an edible and medicinal herb containing mucilaginous cells in its leaves. Mucilage obtained from M. parviflora leaves (MLM) was extracted in distilled water (1:10 w/v) at 70 °C followed by precipitation with alcohol. Preliminary phytochemical tests were performed to assess the purity of the extracted mucilage. Results showed that the yield of mucilage was 7.50%, and it was free from starch, alkaloids, glycosides, saponins, steroids, lipids and heavy metals. MLM had 16.19% carbohydrates, 13.55% proteins and 4.76% amino acids, which indicate its high nutritional value. Physicochemical investigations showed that MLM is neutral and water-soluble, having 5.84% moisture content, 15.60% ash content, 12.33 swelling index, 2.57 g/g water-holding capacity and 2.03 g/g oil-binding capacity. The functional properties, including emulsion capacity, emulsion stability, foaming capacity and stability increased with increased concentrations. Micromeritic properties, such as bulk density, tapped density, Carr's index, Hausner ratio, and angle of repose, were found to be 0.69 g/cm3, 0.84 g/cm3, 17.86%, 1.22 and 28.5, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that MLM is an amorphous powder possessing particles of varying size and shape; meanwhile, rheological studies revealed the pseudoplastic behavior of MLM. The thermal transition process of MLM revealed by a differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) thermogram, occurring at a reasonable enthalpy change (∆H), reflects its good thermal stability. The presence of functional groups characteristic of polysaccharides was ascertained by the infrared (IR) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analyses. GC revealed the presence of five neutral monosaccharides; namely, galactose, rhamnose, arabinose, glucose and mannose, showing 51.09, 10.24, 8.90, 1.80 and 0.90 mg/g of MLM, respectively. Meanwhile, galacturonic acid is the only detected acidic monosaccharide, forming 15.06 mg/g of MLM. It showed noticeable antioxidant activity against the DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) radical with an IC50 value of 154.27 µg/mL. It also prevented oxidative damage to DNA caused by the Fenton reagent, as visualized in gel documentation system. The sun protection factor was found to be 10.93 ± 0.15 at 400 µg/mL. Thus, MLM can be used in food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry and as a therapeutic agent due to its unique properties.
