Citizen science approach to assessing patient perception of MRI with flexible radiofrequency coils.

ABSTRACT: Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a major medical imaging modality, which is non-invasive and provides unique soft tissue contrast without ionizing radiation. The successful completion of MRI exams critically depends on patient compliance, and, thus patient comfort. The design, appearance and usability of local MRI radiofrequency (RF) coils potentially influences the patients' perception of the exam. However, systematic investigations and empirical evidence for these aspects are missing. A questionnaire specifically evaluating the impact of RF coils on patient comfort in MRI would be a valuable addition to clinical studies comparing the performance of novel flexible RF coils with standard rigid coils. This paper describes the development of such a questionnaire in the scope of a citizen science (CS) initiative conducted with a group of students at the upper secondary school level. In this work, the CS initiative is presented in the format of a case report and its impact on scientific projects and the students' education is outlined. The resulting questionnaire is made available in German and English so as to be directly applicable by researchers working on the clinical evaluation of novel RF coils or the comfort evaluation of specific hardware setups in general.

Project description:BackgroundMetasurface coils (MCs) are a promising magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology. Aiming to evaluate the image quality of MCs for knee and elbow imaging, we compared signal-to-noise ratio (SNRs) obtained in standard clinical setups.MethodsKnee and elbow MRI routine sequences were applied at 1.5 T, implementing four coil scenarios: (1) 15-channel transmit/receive knee coil; (2) four-channel multipurpose coil (flex coil); (3) MC + spine coil; and (4) MC + multipurpose coil. Three regions of interest (ROIs) at different anatomical depths were compared.ResultsSeven participants (aged 28 ± 2 years; 6 males) were enrolled. In elbow MRI, the MC + spine coil demonstrated the highest SNR across all ROIs (superficial-anterior: +114%, p = 0.008; middle: +147%, p = 0.008; deep-posterior: +24%, p = 0.039) compared to the flex coil and all ROIs, except the deepest from the MC, compared to the knee coil (superficial-anterior: +28%, p = 0.016; middle: +104%, p = 0.008; deep-posterior: -1%, p = 0.531). In knee MRI, the MC + spine coil provided higher SNR compared to the flex coil, except posterior (superficial-anterior: +69%, p = 0.008; middle: +288%, p = 0.008; deep-posterior: -12%, p = 0.148) versus the knee coil, the MC + spine coil was superior in the middle but non-different in superficial pre-patellar areas and less in deep-posterior areas (superficial-anterior: -8%, p = 0.188; middle: +44%, p = 0.008; deep-posterior: -36%, p = 0.016).ConclusionWireless MCs exhibited great potential for knee and elbow MRI outperforming the flex coil. Future developments will improve the posterior illumination to increase its clinical value.Relevance statementMCs offer enhanced versatility, flexibility, and patient comfort. If universal MC designs can achieve image quality comparable to those of standard coils and simultaneously be utilized across multiple body areas, the technology may revolutionize future musculoskeletal MRIs.Key pointsMCs are promising in MRI, but homogeneity is challenging depending on the design. Signal-to-noise-ratio was improved for knee and elbow imaging with slight inhomogeneous illumination. MCs could match the image quality of standard coils in both knee and elbow imaging.

Project description:Tracking the state of biodiversity over time is critical to successful conservation, but conventional monitoring schemes tend to be insufficient to adequately quantify how species' abundances and distributions are changing. One solution to this issue is to leverage data generated by citizen scientists, who collect vast quantities of data at temporal and spatial scales that cannot be matched by most traditional monitoring methods. However, the quality of citizen science data can vary greatly. In this paper, we develop three metrics (inventory completeness, range completeness, spatial bias) to assess the adequacy of spatial observation data. We explore the adequacy of citizen science data at the species level for Australia's terrestrial native birds and then model these metrics against a suite of seven species traits (threat status, taxonomic uniqueness, body mass, average count, range size, species density, and human population density) to identify predictors of data adequacy. We find that citizen science data adequacy for Australian birds is increasing across two of our metrics (inventory completeness and range completeness), but not spatial bias, which has worsened over time. Relationships between the three metrics and seven traits we modelled were variable, with only two traits having consistently significant relationships across the three metrics. Our results suggest that although citizen science data adequacy has generally increased over time, there are still gaps in the spatial adequacy of citizen science for monitoring many Australian birds. Despite these gaps, citizen science can play an important role in biodiversity monitoring by providing valuable baseline data that may be supplemented by information collected through other methods. We believe the metrics presented here constitute an easily applied approach to assessing the utility of citizen science datasets for biodiversity analyses, allowing researchers to identify and prioritise regions or species with lower data adequacy that will benefit most from targeted monitoring efforts.

Project description:Wild penguins are facing increased threats to their populations and their welfare as a consequence of human activities. Understanding the perception of animal welfare is essential to identify ethical concerns related to the negative impact of anthropogenic factors on wild species and to guide conservation efforts that reflect societal values. Since penguin conservation is of general interest, we examined the human dimension of welfare assessment across a range of interest groups concerned with penguins, seabird biology and wildlife conservation. We provided participants with a Penguin Welfare Assessment Tool (PWAT) based on the five domains model. The PWAT supports consideration of the impact of four physical aspects on welfare-relevant mental states. Bibliometric analysis of keywords from 347 scientific articles indicated that penguins around the world face five main types (themes) of anthropogenic factors and we then developed five hypothetical scenarios, each related to one theme. Seventy-five participants scored the overall impact of the events described in the scenarios on penguin welfare as negative using the PWAT. Participants rated short-duration, high-intensity events (i.e., being trapped in a ghost fishing net) as having a significantly more severe impact on penguin welfare than low-intensity, long-duration events (P < 0.0001). Scores provided by participants for each domain for each scenario were largely as expected and we found good correlation (all P < 0.0001) between the physical domains and "mental state" for all scenarios, indicating that the tool was facilitating the participants' assessment of welfare. No evidence was found that experience of working or studying penguins, or indeed any other demographic factor investigated, influenced the assessments of welfare. We found little agreement between participants in the scores provided (unalike scores mostly between 0.7 and 0.8), and agreement between participants with experience of working with penguins was no better than between participants without such experience. We discuss the possibility that low agreement within different interest groups may be improved by providing more scientific information to support the evaluation of penguin welfare. We conclude that scientific knowledge of penguin biological responses to anthropogenic factors is vital to support the evaluation of wild penguin welfare by the public and other stakeholders.
