Food LEGO: Building hollow cage and sheet superstructures from starch.

ABSTRACT: The idea of building large structures from small building blocks has had a long history in the human imagination, from the beautifully intricate shells assembled from silica by unicellular algae to the Egyptian pyramids built from stone. Carrying this idea into the food industry has important implications. Here, we introduce a Pickering emulsion platform for building superstructures like hollow cages and sheets using starch granules as building blocks. In food, these superstructures occupy up to six times more space than their constituent parts, thereby delivering a viscosity greater by an order of magnitude than unstructured starch. To achieve this higher viscosity, they use an alternative superstructure mechanism as opposed to the classic swelling mechanism of individual particles. These super-thickeners may reduce calories, cut production costs, and stretch the global food supply, demonstrating how we can design the future by playing with our food.

Lego Serious Play: Building engagement with cell biology.

Project description:A Lego Serious Play (LSP) - based exercise was developed to support student engagement with learning consolidation at the end of a first-year undergraduate cell biology course. The exercise was offered in addition to a regular revision session in preparation for the summative exam. Students were studying four-year BSc (Hons) degrees in: Animal Biology, Environmental Biology, Marine and Freshwater Biology, Biological Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Microbiology & Biotechnology in Scotland, UK. Although many students studied Human Biology at High School, in-depth cell biology was studied for the first time by the majority of students during this course. The LSP process was adapted for use in the classroom. Core concepts were identified from the twelve-week cell biology course as the basis for LSP build challenges and incorporated into LSP build - share - reflect cycles by students individually and then joined together by the group to explore the interconnected nature of cell biology processes. Student and lecturer evaluations were thematically analyzed to explore the impact of the technique on student engagement. Results indicate that the method supports student cognitive and affective engagement who report improved and understanding of the topic, and enjoyment and interest. In addition, behavioral engagement such as learner interaction, independence, and empowerment were revealed by the lecturer interview. Identified barriers to the adoption of LSP include perceived issues around creativity, play and exploration and scientific identity, together with a lack of evidence of efficacy. This study seeks to remedy that gap.

Hollow Li20B60 Cage: Stability and Hydrogen Storage.

Project description:A stable hollow Li20B60 cage with D2 symmetry has been identified using first-principles density functional theory studies. The results of vibrational frequency analysis and molecular dynamics simulations demonstrate that this Li20B60 cage is exceptionally stable. The feasibility of functionalizing Li20B60 cage for hydrogen storage was explored theoretically. Our calculated results show that the Li20B60 molecule can adsorb a maximum of 28 hydrogen molecules. With a hydrogen uptake of 8.190 wt% and an average binding energy of 0.336 eV/H2, Li20B60 is a remarkable high-capacity storage medium.

Culture's building blocks: investigating cultural evolution in a LEGO construction task.

Project description:ONE OF THE MOST ESSENTIAL BUT THEORETICALLY VEXING ISSUES REGARDING THE NOTION OF CULTURE IS THAT OF CULTURAL EVOLUTION AND TRANSMISSION: how a group's accumulated solutions to invariant challenges develop and persevere over time. But at the moment, the notion of applying evolutionary theory to culture remains little more than a suggestive trope. Whereas the modern synthesis of evolutionary theory has provided an encompassing scientific framework for the selection and transmission of biological adaptations, a convincing theory of cultural evolution has yet to emerge. One of the greatest challenges for theorists is identifying the appropriate time scales and units of analysis in order to reduce the intractably large and complex phenomenon of "culture" into its component "building blocks." In this paper, we present a model for scientifically investigating cultural processes by analyzing the ways people develop conventions in a series of LEGO construction tasks. The data revealed a surprising pattern in the selection of building bricks as well as features of car design across consecutive building sessions. Our findings support a novel methodology for studying the development and transmission of culture through the microcosm of interactive LEGO design and assembly.

Anion binding properties of a hollow PdL-cage.

Project description:The hollow [PdL][BArF]2 complex 1 of a tetra-pyridyl (py) ligand (L) has a [Pd(py)4]2+ coordination environment. Addition of coordinating anions resulted in the formation of a neutral species with Pd(py)2(anion)2 coordination environment (12A). These species bind further to the coordinating anions in the order Cl- > N3- > Br- > I- > AcO- with Ka1 : 1 ≤ 414 M-1. With relatively non-coordinating anions 1 remains intact and displays 1 : 2 binding behaviour dominated by the 1 : 1 stoichiometry in the order NO3- (∼105 M-1) » ClO4- and BF4- (∼103 M-1). As evidenced by crystal structure data, DFT calculations and {1H-19F}-HOESY NMR with BF4-, the anions are bound by charge assisted [C-H]+···anion interactions.

Modular super-assembly of hierarchical superstructures from monomicelle building blocks.

Project description:Manipulating the super-assembly of polymeric building blocks still remains a great challenge due to their thermodynamic instability. Here, we report on a type of three-dimensional hierarchical core-satellite SiO2@monomicelle spherical superstructures via a previously unexplored monomicelle interfacial super-assembly route. Notably, in this superstructure, an ultrathin single layer of monomicelle subunits (~18 nm) appears in a typically hexagon-like regular discontinuous distribution (adjacent micelle distance of ~30 nm) on solid spherical interfaces (SiO2), which is difficult to achieve by conventional super-assembled methods. Besides, the number of the monomicelles on colloidal SiO2 interfaces can be quantitatively controlled (from 76 to 180). This quantitative control can be precisely manipulated by tuning the interparticle electrostatic interactions (the intermicellar electrostatic repulsion and electrostatic attractions between the monomicelle units and the SiO2 substrate). This monomicelle interfacial super-assembly strategy will enable a controllable way for building multiscale hierarchical regular micro- and/or macroscale materials and devices.

Expeditious synthesis and assembly of sub-100 nm hollow spherical gold nanoparticle superstructures.

Project description:Sub-100 nm hollow gold nanoparticle superstructures were prepared in a direct one-pot reaction. A gold-binding peptide conjugate, C(6)-AA-PEP(Au) (PEP(Au) = AYSSGAPPMPPF), was constructed and used to direct the simultaneous synthesis and assembly of gold nanoparticles. Transmission electron microscopy and electron tomography revealed that the superstructures are uniform and consist of monodisperse gold nanoparticles arranged into a spherical monolayer shell.

Building carbon structures inside hollow carbon spheres.

Project description:The synthesis and characterization of helical carbon nanofibers (CNFs) contained within a fully confined nanoreactor is described. In particular, hollow carbon spheres (od = ca. 310 nm; wall thickness ca. 20 nm) were infiltrated with Cu ions (1%) to produce CuO particles (<10 nm) and the CuO was converted to Cu particles at temperature of 300 °C. Acetylene was then used as a carbon source to grow helical CNFs within the hollow carbon spheres. The diameter and helicity of the CNFs was influenced by the Cu content within a hollow carbon sphere, the limited Cu sintering inside a sphere as well as the dimensions of the sphere. The procedures employed suggest that the philosophy of building other structures (and molecules) with any elements within confined nanoreactors is possible.

Cooperative Assembly of Asymmetric Carbonaceous Bivalve-Like Superstructures from Multiple Building Blocks.

Project description:The assembly of superstructures from building blocks is of fundamental importance for engineering materials with distinct morphologies and properties, and deepening our understanding of self-assembly processes in nature. Up to now, it is still a great challenge in materials science to construct multiple-component superstructure with unprecedented architectural complexity and symmetry from molecular. Here, we demonstrate an improved one-pot hydrothermal carbonization of biomass strategy that is capable of fabricating unprecedented asymmetric carbonaceous bivalve-like superstructures with in suit generated solid particles and ordered porous polymers as two kinds of building blocks. In our system, different building blocks can be controllably generated, and they will assemble into complex superstructures through a proposed "cooperative assembly of particles and ordered porous polymers" mechanism. We believe that this assembly principle will open up new potential fields for the synthesis of superstructures with diverse morphologies, compositions, and properties.

Project description:LEGO bricks are commercially available interlocking pieces of plastic that are conventionally used as toys. We describe their use to build engineered environments for cm-scale biological systems, in particular plant roots. Specifically, we take advantage of the unique modularity of these building blocks to create inexpensive, transparent, reconfigurable, and highly scalable environments for plant growth in which structural obstacles and chemical gradients can be precisely engineered to mimic soil.
