Project description:A simple method for the fabrication of porous silicon (Si) by metal-assisted etching was developed using gold nanoparticles as catalytic sites. The etching masks were prepared by spin-coating of colloidal gold nanoparticles onto Si. An appropriate functionalization of the gold nanoparticle surface prior to the deposition step enabled the formation of quasi-hexagonally ordered arrays by self-assembly which were translated into an array of pores by subsequent etching in HF solution containing H2O2. The quality of the pattern transfer depended on the chosen preparation conditions for the gold nanoparticle etching mask. The influence of the Si surface properties was investigated by using either hydrophilic or hydrophobic Si substrates resulting from piranha solution or HF treatment, respectively. The polymer-coated gold nanoparticles had to be thermally treated in order to provide a direct contact at the metal/Si interface which is required for the following metal-assisted etching. Plasma treatment as well as flame annealing was successfully applied. The best results were obtained for Si substrates which were flame annealed in order to remove the polymer matrix - independent of the substrate surface properties prior to spin-coating (hydrophilic or hydrophobic). The presented method opens up new resources for the fabrication of porous silicon by metal-assisted etching. Here, a vast variety of metal nanoparticles accessible by well-established wet-chemical synthesis can be employed for the fabrication of the etching masks.

Project description:Silicon has been identified as a highly promising anode for next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The key challenge for Si anodes is large volume change during the lithiation/delithiation cycle that results in chemomechanical degradation and subsequent rapid capacity fading. Here we report a novel fabrication method for hierarchically porous Si nanospheres (hp-SiNSs), which consist of a porous shell and a hollow core. On charge/discharge cycling, the hp-SiNSs accommodate the volume change through reversible inward Li breathing with negligible particle-level outward expansion. Our mechanics analysis revealed that such inward expansion is enabled by the much stiffer lithiated layer than the unlithiated porous layer. LIBs assembled with the hp-SiNSs exhibit high capacity, high power and long cycle life, which is superior to the current commercial Si-based anode materials. The low-cost synthesis approach provides a new avenue for the rational design of hierarchically porous structures with unique materials properties.

Project description:The use of mesoporous silicon particles for drug delivery has been widely explored thanks to their biodegradability and biocompatibility. The ability to tailor the physicochemical properties of porous silicon at the micro- and nanoscale confers versatility to this material. A method for the fabrication of highly reproducible, monodisperse, mesoporous silicon particles with controlled physical characteristics through electrochemical etching of patterned silicon trenches is presented. The particle size is tailored in the micrometer range and pore size in the nanometer range, the shape from tubular to discoidal to hemispherical, and the porosity from 46 to over 80%. In addition, the properties of the porous matrix are correlated with the loading of model nanoparticles (quantum dots) and their three-dimensional arrangement within the matrix is observed by transmission electron microscopy tomography. The methods developed in this study provide effective means to fabricate mesoporous silicon particles according to the principles of rational design for therapeutic vectors and to characterize the distribution of nanoparticles within the porous matrix.

Project description:Silicon (Si) has been well recognized as a promising candidate to replace graphite because of its earth abundance and high-capacity storage, but its large volume changes upon lithiation/delithiation and the consequential material fracturing, loss of electrical contact, and over-consumption of the electrolyte prevent its full application. As a countermeasure for rapid capacity decay, a composite electrode of graphite and Si has been adopted by accommodating Si nanoparticles in a graphite matrix. Such an approach, which involves two materials that interact electrochemically with lithium in the electrode, necessitates an analytical methodology to determine the individual electrochemical behavior of each active material. In this work, a methodology comprising differential plots and integral calculus is established to analyze the complicated interplay among the two active batteries and investigate the failure mechanism underlying capacity fade in the blend electrode. To address performance deficiencies identified by this methodology, an aluminum alkoxide (alucone) surface-modification strategy is demonstrated to stabilize the structure and electrochemical performance of the graphite-Si composite electrode. The integrated approach established in this work is of great importance to the design and diagnostics of a multi-component composite electrode, which is expected to be high interest to other next-generation battery system.

Project description:Highly monodisperse porous silicon nanospheres (MPSSs) are synthesized via a simple and scalable hydrolysis process with subsequent surface-protected magnesiothermic reduction. The spherical nature of the MPSSs allows for a homogenous stress-strain distribution within the structure during lithiation and delithiation, which dramatically improves the electrochemical stability. To fully extract the real performance of the MPSSs, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were added to enhance the electronic conductivity within the composite electrode structure, which has been verified to be an effective way to improve the rate and cycling performance of anodes based on nano-Si. The Li-ion battery (LIB) anodes based on MPSSs demonstrate a high reversible capacity of 3105 mAh g(-1). In particular, reversible Li storage capacities above 1500 mAh g(-1) were maintained after 500 cycles at a high rate of C/2. We believe this innovative approach for synthesizing porous Si-based LIB anode materials by using surface-protected magnesiothermic reduction can be readily applied to other types of SiOx nano/microstructures.

Project description:To develop an advanced anode for lithium-ion batteries, the electrochemical performance of a novel material comprising a porous artificial carbon (PAC)-Si composite was investigated. To increase the pore size and surface area of the composite, ammonium bicarbonate (ABC) was introduced during high-energy ball-milling, ensuring a uniform distribution of silicon within the PAC matrix. The physical and structural properties of the developed material were evaluated using several advanced techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and galvanostatic intermittent titration (GITT). Artificial graphite contains several macropores that can accommodate volume hysteresis and provide effective sites for anchoring Si nanoparticles, enabling efficient electrochemical reactions. GITT analysis revealed that the PAC-Si-CB-ABC composite exhibited superior lithium-ion diffusion compared to conventional graphite. The developed PAC(55%)-Si(45%)-CB-ABC electrode with PAA as the binder demonstrated a reversible capacity of 850 mAh g-1 at 100 mA g-1 and a high-rate capability of 600 mAh g-1 at 2000 mA g-1. A full cell employing the NCM622 cathode exhibited reversible cyclability of 128.9 mAh g-1 with a reasonable energy density of 323.3 Wh kg-1. These findings suggest that the developed composite is a useful anode system for advanced lithium-ion batteries.

Project description:Heavy-phosphorus-doped silicon anodes were fabricated on CuO nanorods for application in high power lithium-ion batteries. Since the conductivity of lithiated CuO is significantly better than that of CuO, after the first discharge, the voltage cut-off window was then set to the range covering only the discharge-charge range of Si. Thus, the CuO core was in situ lithiated and acts merely as the electronic conductor in the following cycles. The Si anode presented herein exhibited a capacity of 990 mAh/g at the rate of 9 A/g after 100 cycles. The anode also presented a stable rate performance even at a current density as high as 20 A/g.

Project description:To achieve superior lithium storage performance, SiO x is usually designed into nanostructured SiO x /C composites by complex or expensive methods. Here, micron-sized interconnected SiO x /N-doped carbon (NC) microspheres composed of evenly dispersed SiO x nano-domains and NC have been fabricated by a scalable microemulsion method and following pyrolysis, using vinyltriethoxysilane and chitosan as precursors. The unique structure of the micron-sized SiO x /NC spheres leads to enhanced structural integrity and enables stable long-term cycling (800 cycles at 2 A g-1). Benefiting from the enhanced electron/Li+ diffusion kinetics originated from the unique structure and N-doping, SiO x /NC-2 presents considerable capacitive-controlled Li storage capacity, which leads to outstanding rate capability. Consequently, the assembled SiO x /NC-2//LiFePO4 full cell exhibits superior rate capability (106 mA h g-1 at 4C) and stable long-term cycling at 2C (102 mA h g-1 after 350 cycles). This work opens a new door for the application of chitosan in building micron-sized high-performance SiO x /C anode materials, and to some extent facilitates the recycling of waste seafood shells.

Project description:Lithium iron phosphate, LiFePO4 (LFP) has demonstrated promising performance as a cathode material in lithium ion batteries (LIBs), by overcoming the rate performance issues from limited electronic conductivity. Nano-sized vanadium-doped LFP (V-LFP) was synthesized using a continuous hydrothermal process using supercritical water as a reagent. The atomic % of dopant determined the particle shape. 5 at. % gave mixed plate and rod-like morphology, showing optimal electrochemical performance and good rate properties vs. Li. Specific capacities of >160 mAh g-1 were achieved. In order to increase the capacity of a full cell, V-LFP was cycled against an inexpensive micron-sized metallurgical grade Si-containing anode. This electrode was capable of reversible capacities of approximately 2000 mAh g-1 for over 150 cycles vs. Li, with improved performance resulting from the incorporation of few layer graphene (FLG) to enhance conductivity, tensile behaviour and thus, the composite stability. The cathode material synthesis and electrode formulation are scalable, inexpensive and are suitable for the fabrication of larger format cells suited to grid and transport applications.

Project description:Electrochemical oxidation processes usually favored specific degradation pathways depending on anode materials. In this work, a series of sulfonamides (SNs) were degraded by electrochemical oxidation. Compared to Pt anodes (0.1567-0.1795?h-1), degradation rates of SNs were much higher at boron-doped diamond (BDD) anodes (2.4290-13.1950?h-1). However, the same intermediates were detected in the two anode systems. Due to the strong oxidizing ability of BDD anodes, a large amount of intermediates with high toxicities were initially generated and then finally reduced in the BDD anode systems, while the amount of intermediates continuously increased in the Pt anode systems. Additionally, SNs were degraded faster in Na2SO4 than NaH2PO4 electrolytes at BDD anodes, while they were similar at Pt anodes. This study demonstrated that the degradation pathways of SNs at BDD and Pt anodes were similar, but the evolutions of intermediate amounts and toxicities were different due to their varied oxidizing abilities.
