Project description:This paper proposes a convenient route to oxidize the -CH2-OH groups in the water-soluble pullulan, using a new catalytic polymer-supported N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) immobilized on polystyrene. The protocol involves the presence of sodium hypochlorite and sodium bromide. The conversion is possible at room temperature, atmospheric pressure, and pH = 10. The characterization of both the catalysts and oxidized pullulan was done using NMR and FTIR methods. Using polyelectrolyte titration with end-point indication by means of a particle-charge detector (PCD), we were able to assess the degree of electrokinetic charge in all oxidized samples as a consequence of the conversion of the -CH2-OH group into -COOH moieties. The possibility of recovery and recycling of the polymer-supported NHPI catalyst was tested for up to four cycles, since the morphological analyses performed on the catalysts using SEM revealed no significant changes.

Project description:Herein, it has been shown that betulin can be transformed into its biologically active oxo-derivatives (betulone, betulinic and betulonic aldehydes) by liquid-phase oxidation over supported silver catalysts under mild conditions. In order to identify the main factors determining the catalytic behavior of nanosilver catalysts in betulin oxidation, silver was deposited on various alumina supports (γ-alumina and boehmite) using deposition-precipitation with NaOH and incipient wetness impregnation methods, followed by treatment in H2 or O2. Silver catalysts and the corresponding supports were characterized by X-ray diffraction, nitrogen physisorption, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy, photoelectron spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. It was found that the support nature, preparation and treatment methods predetermine not only the average Ag nanoparticles size and their distribution, but also the selectivity of betulin oxidation, and thereby, the catalytic behavior of Ag catalysts. In fact, the support nature had the most considerable effect. Betulin conversion, depending on the support, increased in the following order: Ag/boehmite < Ag/boehmite (calcined) < Ag/γ-alumina. However, in the same order, the share of side reactions catalyzed by strong Lewis acid centers of the support also increased. Poisoning of the latter by NaOH during catalysts preparation can reduce side reactions. Additionally, it was revealed that the betulin oxidation catalyzed by nanosilver catalysts is a structure-sensitive reaction.

Project description:Toluene treatment has received extensive attention, and ozone synergistic catalytic oxidation was thought to be a potential method to degrade VOCs (violate organic compounds) due to its low reaction temperature and high catalytic efficiency. A series of bimetal/Cord monolithic catalysts were prepared by impregnation with cordierite, including MnxCu5-x/Cord, MnxCo5-x/Cord and CuxCo5-x/Cord (x = 1, 2, 3, 4). Analysis of textural properties, structures and morphology characteristics on the prepared catalysts were conducted to evaluate their performance on toluene conversion. Effects of active component ratio, ozone addition and space velocity on the catalytic oxidation of toluene were investigated. Results showed that MnxCo5-x/Cord was the best among the three bimetal catalysts, and toluene conversion and mineralization rates reached 100 and 96% under the condition of Mn2Co3/Cord with 3.0 g/m3 O3 at the space velocity of 12,000 h-1. Ozone addition in the catalytic oxidation of toluene by MnxCo5-x/Cord could efficiently avoid the 40% reduction of the specific surface area of catalysts, because it could lower the optimal temperature from 300 to 100 °C. (Co/Mn)(Co/Mn)2O4 diffraction peaks in XRD spectra indicated all the four MnxCo1-x/Cord catalysts had a spinel structure, and diffraction peak intensity of spinel reached the largest at the ratio of Mn:Co = 2:3. Toluene conversion rate increased with rising ozone concentration because intermediate products generated by toluene degradation might react with excess ozone to generate free radicals like ·OH, which would improve the toluene mineralization rate of Mn2Co3/Cord catalyst. This study would provide a theoretical support for its industrial application.

Project description:Nitroxide radicals are widely utilized as catalysts for the oxidation of primary alcohols. Here, the aerobic catalytic oxidation cycle of nitroxide radicals has been implemented within a mechanically interlocked rotaxane architecture consisting of a paramagnetic crown ether, which is confined by a molecular axle containing a dialkylammonium station and a 1,2,3-triazole unit. The rotaxane is engineered to exploit the oxidation of a primary alcohol: the primary catalyst is the wheel, a nitroxide radical capable of altering its oxidation state during the catalytic cycle, while the co-oxidant is the Cerium(IV)/O2 couple. The synthesis of the proposed rotaxane, along with its characterization using EPR, HRMS, voltammetry and NMR data, is reported in the paper. The aerobic catalytic oxidation cycle was further investigated using EPR, NMR and GC-MS analyses. This study can aid in the design of autonomously driven molecular machines that exploit the aerobic catalytic oxidation of nitroxide radicals.

Project description:We report the first FeII -catalyzed biomimetic aerobic oxidation of alcohols. The principle of this oxidation, which involves several electron-transfer steps, is reminiscent of biological oxidation in the respiratory chain. The electron transfer from the alcohol to molecular oxygen occurs with the aid of three coupled catalytic redox systems, leading to a low-energy pathway. An iron transfer-hydrogenation complex was utilized as a substrate-selective dehydrogenation catalyst, along with an electron-rich quinone and an oxygen-activating Co(salen)-type complex as electron-transfer mediators. Various primary and secondary alcohols were oxidized in air to the corresponding aldehydes or ketones with this method in good to excellent yields.

Project description:In this paper, Raman spectroscopy is used as a tool to study the mechanism of furfural oxidation using H2O2 as a reagent on gold nanoparticles (NPs) supported on hydrotalcites (HTs). This reaction was repeated, under the same conditions, but with different reaction times in a parallel multireactor system. The reaction media were analyzed using a macro device associated with a multipass cell permitting us to enhance the Raman signal by reflecting the laser beam 3 times. The Raman spectra showed the conversion of furfural to furoic acid without any chemical intermediates, thus privileging a direct pathway. Combining the results of the catalytic tests with those of the Raman study, the mechanism of furfural oxidation to furoic acid using gold NPs supported on HTs is proposed. The key points of this mechanism were found to be as follows: (i) the in situ formation of a base, originating from the Mg leaching from the HT support, initiates the oxidation of furfural by deprotonation; (ii) H2O2 used as a reagent in the solution increases the catalytic activity by its dissociation to form hydroxide ions; and (iii) the oxidation of furfural occurs on the surface of gold NPs and leads to higher furoic acid yield.

The dehydrogenation process, involving several electron-transfer steps, is inspired by oxidations occurring in the respiratory chain. An environmentally friendly and inexpensive iron catalyst together with a hydroquinone/cobalt Schiff base hybrid catalyst as electron-transfer mediator were used for the substrate-selective dehydrogenation reaction of various N-heterocycles. The method shows a broad substrate scope and delivers important heterocycles in good-to-excellent yields.

Project description:Homogeneous Cu/TEMPO catalyst systems (TEMPO = 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxyl) have emerged as some of the most versatile and practical catalysts for aerobic alcohol oxidation. Recently, we disclosed a (bpy)Cu(I)/TEMPO/NMI catalyst system (NMI = N-methylimidazole) that exhibits fast rates and high selectivities, even with unactivated aliphatic alcohols. Here, we present a mechanistic investigation of this catalyst system, in which we compare the reactivity of benzylic and aliphatic alcohols. This work includes analysis of catalytic rates by gas-uptake and in situ IR kinetic methods and characterization of the catalyst speciation during the reaction by EPR and UV-visible spectroscopic methods. The data support a two-stage catalytic mechanism consisting of (1) "catalyst oxidation" in which Cu(I) and TEMPO-H are oxidized by O(2) via a binuclear Cu(2)O(2) intermediate and (2) "substrate oxidation" mediated by Cu(II) and the nitroxyl radical of TEMPO via a Cu(II)-alkoxide intermediate. Catalytic rate laws, kinetic isotope effects, and spectroscopic data show that reactions of benzylic and aliphatic alcohols have different turnover-limiting steps. Catalyst oxidation by O(2) is turnover limiting with benzylic alcohols, while numerous steps contribute to the turnover rate in the oxidation of aliphatic alcohols.

Project description:The electrochemical oxidation of 2,4-toluene diisocyanate (2,4-TDI) in an ionic liquid (IL) has been systematically characterized to determine plausible electrochemical and chemical reaction mechanisms and to define the optimal detection methods for such a highly significant analyte. It has been found that the use of an IL as the electrolyte allows the oxidation of 2,4-TDI to occur at a less positive anodic potential with no side reactions as compared to traditional acetonitrile based electrolytes. UV-Vis, FT-IR, cyclic voltammetry and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) studies have revealed the unique mechanisms of dimerization of 2,4-TDI at the electrode interface by self-addition reactions, which can be utilized to improve the selectivity of detection. The study of 2,4-TDI redox chemistry further facilitates the development of a robust amperometric sensing methodology by selecting a hydrophobic IL ([C4mpy][NTf2]) and by restricting the potential window to only include the oxidation process. Thus, this innovative electrochemical sensor is capable of avoiding the two most ubiquitous interferents in ambient conditions (i.e. humidity and oxygen), thereby enhancing the sensor performance and reliability for real world applications. The method was established to detect 2,4-TDI in both liquid and gas phases. The limits of detection (LOD) values were 130.2 ppm and 0.7862 ppm, respectively, for the two phases, and are comparable to the safety standards reported by NIOSH. The as-developed 2.4-TDI amperometric sensor exhibits a sensitivity of 1.939 μA ppm(-1). Moreover, due to the simplicity of design and the use of an IL both as a solvent and non-volatile electrolyte, the sensor has the potential to be miniaturized for smart sensing protocols in distributed sensor applications.
