Characterization of WO₃/Silicone Rubber Composites for Hydrogen-Sensitive Gasochromic Application.

ABSTRACT: WO₃ and silicone rubber (SR)-based gasochromic composites were fabricated to detect hydrogen leaks at room temperature. WO₃ rod-like nanostructures were uniformly distributed in the SR matrix, with a particle size of 60-100 nm. The hydrogen permeability of these composites reached 1.77 cm³·cm/cm²·s·cm_Hg. At a 10% hydrogen concentration, the visible light reflectance of the composite decreased 49% during about 40 s, with a color change rate of 6.4% s^-1. Moreover, the composite detected hydrogen concentrations as low as 0.1%. And a color scale was obtained for easily assessing hydrogen concentrations in the environment based on the color of composites. Finally, the composite materials as disposable sensors underwent testing at several Sinopec hydrogen refueling stations.

Multipurpose Processing Additives for Silica/Rubber Composites: Synthesis, Characterization, and Application.

Project description:Processing additives are a special group of chemicals included in rubber formulations to facilitate the flowability of the resultant compounds. Their addition generally affects the cured properties of the subsequent rubber composites, and fine-tuning of the compound formulation is therefore required. In this work, an attempt has been made to address this issue through the preparation of new bio-based processing additives capable of promoting the mixing of the rubber compound while at the same time enhancing mechanical properties following curing. A significant decrease in the mixing energy at the first stage of mixing (~10%) has been observed by substituting only a small percentage of the conventional petroleum-derived process oil with aminated epoxidized soybean oil. Concomitantly, it is found that this aminated epoxidized soybean oil promotes rubber curing and increases the tensile strength of the final composite by ~20% compared to the control.

Relationship between dynamic fatigue crack propagation properties and viscoelasticity of natural rubber/silicone rubber composites.

Project description:In this paper, dynamic fatigue crack propagation properties of natural rubber/silicone rubber (NR/VMQ) composites are studied under constant tearing energy (G) input. Through dynamic fatigue crack growth testing, it is found that with the increase of VMQ fraction, NR/VMQ exhibits a lower crack growth rate (dc/dN). The viscoelastic parameters have been recorded in real-time during crack propagation, including the storage modulus E', loss factor tan δ, and loss compliance modulus J'', and their relationships with crack propagation behaviour have been established. The improved crack propagation resistance is attributed to the reduced J'', resulting from the synergistic effect of increased E' and decreased tan δ, and thus more energy dissipation occurred in the linear viscoelastic region in front of the crack tip, which consumed part of the energy for crack growth. Finally, good correlation between dc/dN and J'' could be successfully established.

Improving the Ablation Properties of Liquid Silicone Rubber Composites by Incorporating Hexaphenoxycyclotriphosphonitrile.

Project description:The ablative properties of epoxy-modified vinyl silicone rubber (EMVSR) composites containing hexaphenoxycyclotriphosphonitrile (HPCTP) have been systematically studied. The strength of the ablation char layer was greatly enhanced with the addition of HPCTP, which induced the formation of a more complete, denser, and thicker char during oxyacetylene ablation tests. Moreover, the HPCTP-containing EMVSR composites demonstrated lower thermal conductivity and pyrolysis rate when compared with those without HPTCP. At the same time, the thermal insulation properties of HPCTP-filled composites were improved under low heat flow ablation scenarios. The reduction of graphitic carbon content, the formation of phosphate-like crystals as well as the increase of SiC content contributed to strengthening the char layer, which was critical for improving the ablation properties. The optimum char layer strength and thermal insulation properties were achieved when the content of HPCTP was 15 phr, whereas an optimum ablation resistance was achieved at 25 phr HPCTP. This suggests that HPCTP-modified EMVSR composites can be used for thermal protection purposes, especially in the fields of aerospace and aeronautics.

Improving the Heat and Ablation Resistance of Silicone Rubber Composites by Incorporating Hollow Microspheres.

Project description:For thermal protection materials (TPMs) which are used to protect space vehicles from extreme thermomechanical environments, the thermal conductivity of the original material and the char layer that has formed during ablation plays a significant role in determining the ablation performance. In order to investigate this, in this study, we introduced glass hollow microspheres (GHMs), phenolic hollow microspheres (PHMs), and acrylonitrile-methyl methacrylate copolymer hollow microspheres (AMHMs) into silicone rubber (SR), and the ablation performance of these composites was systematically studied. The thermogravimetric results showed that the residue yield of the SR composites was increased with the incorporation of the hollow microspheres. Compared to the SR composites without the hollow microspheres, the residue weight values under 800 °C (R800) of the SR composites with the 30 parts of fumed silica per hundred of the SR (phr) addition of GHMs, PHMs, and AMHMs were increased from 10.11% to 21.70%, 18.31%, and 20.83%, respectively. The ablation tests showed that the addition of the AMHMs enhanced the ablation performance of the SR composites because the linear ablation rates and the backplane temperature were clearly decreased when compared to the SR composites without the hollow microspheres. This work provides an effective and potential method for preparing thermal protection materials with an improved ablation performance.

Silanized Graphene Oxide-Supported Pd Nanoparticles and Silicone Rubber for Enhanced Hydrogen Elimination.

Project description:Hydrogen is a dangerous gas because it reacts very easily with oxygen to explode, and the accumulation of hydrogen in confined spaces is a safety hazard. Composites consisting of polymers and catalysts are a common getter, where the commonly used catalyst is usually commercial Pd/C. However, it often shows poor compatibility with polymers, making it difficult to form a homogeneous and stable composite. In this work, palladium chloride (PdCl2) was converted to palladium (Pd) nanoparticles by reduction reaction and supported on graphene oxide (GO) modified by silanization. Spherical Pd nanoparticles with a size of 2-36 nm were uniformly distributed over the Silanized graphene oxide (SGO) matrix. When mixed with Pd/SGO, polymethylvinylsiloxane can be cured to silicone rubber (SR) by B2O3. Afterwards, the vinyl in the polymer can interact with hydrogen under the catalysis of Pd through the addition reaction, thus achieving the purpose of hydrogen elimination. The polymer elastomers with excellent self-healing properties and improved hydrogen elimination performance were prepared and were superior to the commercial Pd/C. In addition, excellent environmental adaptability was also demonstrated. The new getter SR-Pd/SGO provides a new avenue for developing polymer getters with superior properties.

Properties of Silicone Rubber-Based Composites Reinforced with Few-Layer Graphene and Iron Oxide or Titanium Dioxide.

Project description:The increasing demand for polymer composites with novel or improved properties requires novel fillers. To meet the challenges posed, nanofillers such as graphene, carbon nanotubes, and titanium dioxide (TiO2) have been used. In the present work, few-layer graphene (FLG) and iron oxide (Fe3O4) or TiO2 were used as fillers in a room-temperature-vulcanized (RTV) silicone rubber (SR) matrix. Composites were prepared by mixing RTV-SR with nanofillers and then kept for vulcanization at room temperature for 24 h. The RTV-SR composites obtained were characterized with respect to their mechanical, actuation, and magnetic properties. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis was performed to investigate the composite raw materials and finished composites, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis was used to study composite surface elemental compositions. Results showed that mechanical properties were improved by adding fillers, and actuation displacements were dependent on the type of nanofiller used and the applied voltage. Magnetic stress-relaxation also increased with filler amount and stress-relaxation rates decreased when a magnetic field was applied parallel to the deformation axes. Thus, this study showed that the inclusion of iron oxide (Fe3O4) or TiO2 fillers in RTV-SR improves mechanical, actuation, and magnetic properties.

Preparation of High-Strength and Excellent Compatibility Fluorine/Silicone Rubber Composites under the Synergistic Effect of Fillers.

Project description:Fluorine/silicone composite rubber is widely used as a sealing material in aerospace, missile, automotive, petroleum, and other industries, but the traditional process does not use synergistic fillers to strengthen the composite system. In this research, fumed SiO2 and black caron (N990) were used as synergistic fillers, fluorine/silicone composite rubber was prepared by mechanical mixing process, and three different fluorine rubber systems were used to find the best composite material. The mechanical properties, thermal properties, aging properties, moderate strength properties, and microstructure of the composites were evaluated. Studies have shown that mixing the two can produce a certain interface interaction and effectively improve the compatibility. The physical properties of the material tended to decrease during the increase in the added amount of silicone rubber (MVQ). The maximum tensile strength of the hybrid material can reach 15 MPa. The optimal mixing ratio is fluororubber/silicone rubber (FKM/MVQ) = 9/1. At this time, the mechanical properties of the composite material are in the best state, and SiO2 and black caron (N990) have a reinforcing effect, which can effectively improve the mechanical properties. After the composite was kept at 200 °C for 48 h, the tensile strength and elongation of the best sample A1 were 99.5 and 97.0%, respectively, showing excellent anti-aging properties. This work provides a method to fabricate high-strength fluorine/silicone composites using synergistic fillers that may be used in heat-medium-sealed environments.

Improved Ablation Resistance of Silicone Rubber Composites by Introducing Montmorillonite and Silicon Carbide Whisker.

Project description:Montmorillonite (MMT) was added to silicone rubber (SR) to improve the ablation resistance of the silicone. Following this, different quantities of silicon carbide whiskers (SiCw) were incorporated into the MMT/SR to yield a hybrid, ablative composite. The tensile strength and elongation at break of the composite increased after the addition of MMT. The ablation test results showed that MMT helped to form a covering layer by bonding with the silica and other components on the ablated surface. The linear and mass ablation rates exhibited decreases of 22.5% and 18.2%, respectively, in comparison to a control sample. After further incorporation of SiCw as the second filler, the resulting composites exhibited significantly higher tensile strength and ablation resistance, but not particularly lower elongation at break in comparison to the control sample. The SiCw/MMT fillers were beneficial in forming a dense and compact covering layer that delayed the heat and oxygen diffusion into the inner layers, which improved the ablation properties effectively. The remaining whiskers acted as a micro skeleton to maintain the composite's char strength. Compared to the control sample, the linear and mass ablation rates of the composite after incorporating 6 phr SiCw and 10 phr MMT decreased by 59.2% and 43.6%, respectively. These experimental results showed that the fabricated composites exhibited outstanding mechanical properties and excellent ablation resistance.

Al@SiO2 Core-Shell Fillers Enhance Dielectric Properties of Silicone Composites.

Project description:Over the past decade, there has been significant interest in polysiloxane-based dielectric elastomers as promising soft electroactive materials. Nevertheless, the natural low permittivity of polydimethylsiloxane has limited its practical applications. In this study, we have developed silicone rubber/Al@SiO2 composites with a high dielectric constant, low dielectric loss, and high electrical breakdown strength by controlling the shell layer thickness and the content of the core-shell filler. We also investigated the dielectric behavior of the composites. The use of core-shell fillers has increased the Maxwell-Wagner-Sillars (MWS) relaxation process while reducing the dielectric loss of direct current conductance in silicone rubber composites. Moreover, the temperature dependence of the MWS relaxation time in the composites follows the Arrhenius equation. This strategy of increasing the permittivity of silicone composites through core-shell structural fillers can inspire the preparation of other high dielectric constant composites.

Effect of Functionalization of Graphene Nanoplatelets on the Mechanical and Thermal Properties of Silicone Rubber Composites.

Project description:This study investigated the effect of silane and surfactant treatments of graphene nanoplatelets (GnPs) on the mechanical and thermal properties of silicone rubber (SR) composites. GnPs were modified with aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES), vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS), and Triton X-100, and then the pristine GnPs and functionalized GnPs were individually incorporated into the SR. Compared with the pristine GnP/SR composite, the composites reinforced with modified GnP showed better tensile strength, elongation at break, and thermal conductivity properties due to better dispersion of modified GnPs and stronger interfacial interactions between the modified GnPs and matrix. The mechanical properties and thermal conductivity of the VTMS-GnP/SR composite were comparable to the properties of the Triton-GnP counterpart, but better than that of the APTES-GnP/SR composite. In addition, the VTMS-GnP/SR composite demonstrated the highest thermal stability and crystallization temperature among the four types of composites. The remarkable improvement of mechanical and thermal properties of the VTMS-GnP/SR composite was mainly due to the covalent linkage of VTMS-GnP with SR. The VTMS treatment was a more appropriate modification of GnP particles to improve the multifunctional properties of SR.
