In animals, stem cell populations of varying potency facilitate regeneration and tissue homeostasis. Notably, germline stem cells in both vertebrates and invertebrates express highly conserved RNA binding proteins, such as <i>nanos</i>, <i>vasa</i>, and <i>piwi</i>.
