Terpolymerization of Ethylene with Hexene and Styrene Derivatives by Half-Sandwich Scandium Catalyst.

ABSTRACT: The terpolymerization of ethylene with hexene and styrene derivatives was achieved with a rare earth metal catalyst (C₅Me₄SiMe₃)Sc(CH₂C₆H₄NMe₂-o)₂ to prepare functional polyethylene. The catalyst system exhibited high activity in the terpolymerization of ethylene with hexene and amine-substituted styrene, affording terpolymers a moderate molecular weight and a unimodal molecular weight distribution. In addition, the comonomer content of the terpolymers can be controlled by changing the feeding ratio of monomers. The aliphatic region of the ¹³C NMR spectra reveals that the structural units of the comonomers are separately incorporated into the polyethylene backbone. Terpolymers containing styrene derivatives exhibit enhanced tensile strength and significantly improve hydrophilic properties.

Terpolymerization of Substituted Cycloolefin with Ethylene and Norbornene by Transition Metal Catalyst.

Project description:Ethylene-norbornene terpolymerization experiments using 5-alkyl-substituted norbornenes (5-pentyl-2-norbornene (C₅N) and 5-octyl-2-norbornene (C₈N)) or dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) were conducted with two ansa-metallocenes, [Zr{(η⁵-C₉H₆)₂C₂H₄}Cl2] (1) and [Zr{(η⁵-2,5-Me₂C₅H₂)₂CHEt}Cl₂] (2), activated by methylaluminoxane (MAO). The terpolymers obtained were investigated in detail by determining the microstructure and termonomer contents by 13C NMR, molar masses and thermal properties. Results were compared to those of ethylene (E)-norbornene (N) terpolymerizations with 1-octene. 2, with lower steric hindrance and a shorter bridge, gave the best activities, termonomer incorporation and molar masses. The size of the substituent in 5-alkyl substituted norbornene also plays a role. C₈N gives the highest activities and molar masses, while DCPD terpolymers have the highest cycloolefin content. Terpolymers are random; their molar masses, much higher than those in 1-octene terpolymers, are in a range useful for industrial applications. Finally, Tg values up to 152 °C were obtained. For similar N content, poly(E-ter-N-ter-C₈N)s and poly(E-ter-N-ter-DCPD)s have the lowest and the highest Tg values, respectively. Thus, the presence of an eight-carbon atom pendant chain in C₈N increases the flexibility of the polymer chain more than a five-carbon atom pendant chain in C₅N. The higher rigidity of C₅N may lead to lower activities and to increasing probability of σ-bond metathesis and chain termination, as evidenced by chain-end group analysis.

Half-Sandwich Zirconium and Hafnium Amidoborane Complexes: Precursors of Hydride Derivatives.

Project description:Half-sandwich zirconium(IV) and hafnium(IV) complexes with amidoborane and hydride ligands have been isolated in the stoichiometric reactions of mono(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)metal alkyl and amido derivatives with the amine-boranes NHR2BH3 (R2 = H2, Me2, HtBu). Treatment of the tris(trimethylsilylmethyl) complexes [M(η5-C5Me5)(CH2SiMe3)3] with NH3BH3 (3 equiv) gives the seven-coordinate species [M(η5-C5Me5)(NH2BH3)3] (M = Zr (1), Hf (2)) with three κ2N,H-NH2BH3 ligands. The tris(neophyl) [M(η5-C5Me5)(CH2CMe2Ph)3] or tris(dimethylamido) [M(η5-C5Me5)(NMe2)3] derivatives react with NHMe2BH3 (≥3 equiv) to afford bis(dimethylamidoborane) hydride complexes [M(η5-C5Me5)H(NMe2BH3)2] (M = Zr (3), Hf (4)) via thermally unstable [M(η5-C5Me5)(NMe2BH3)3] species. The reaction of [M(η5-C5Me5)(NMe2)3] and NH2tBuBH3 (≥4 equiv) affords analogous mixed amidoborane hydride derivatives [M(η5-C5Me5)H(NHtBuBH3)(NMe2BH3)] (M = Zr (5), Hf (6)) with κ2N,H-NHtBuBH3 and κ3N,H,H-NMe2BH3 ligands. The addition of NHR2BH3 (≥1 equiv) on the mono(dimethylamido) complexes [M(η5-C5Me5)Cl2(NMe2)] in hexane leads to the precipitation of the ionic compounds [(NHR2)2BH2][{M(η5-C5Me5)Cl2}2(μ-H)3] (R2 = Me2, M = Zr (7), Hf (8); R2 = HtBu, M = Zr (9), Hf (10)). Molecular hydride species [Cl2(η5-C5Me5)M(μ-Cl)(μ-H)2M(η5-C5Me5)Cl(NH2tBu)] (M = Zr (11), Hf (12)) could be isolated from mixtures of complexes [M(η5-C5Me5)Cl2(NMe2)] and lower ratios of NH2tBuBH3. The zirconium complex 11 decomposes in solution to give the mononuclear tert-butylamido derivative [Zr(η5-C5Me5)Cl2(NHtBu)] (13) along with other byproducts.

Synthesis of ultra-high molecular weight poly(ethylene)-co-(1-hexene) copolymers through high-throughput catalyst screening.

Project description:A family of permethylindenyl titanium constrained geometry complexes, Me2SB(R'N,3-RI*)TiX2 ((3-R-η5-C9Me5)Me2Si(R'TiX2)), supported on solid polymethylaluminoxane (sMAO) are investigated as slurry-phase catalysts for ethylene/H2 homopolymerisation and ethylene/1-hexene copolymerisation by high-throughput catalyst screening. Me2SB( tBuN,I*)TiCl2 supported on sMAO [sMAO-Me2SB( tBuN,I*)TiCl2] is responsive to small quantities of H2 (<1.6%), maintaining high polymerisation activities (up to 4900 kgPE molTi -1 h-1 bar-1) and yielding polyethylenes with significantly decreased molecular weight (M w) (from 2700 to 41 kDa with 1.6% H2). In slurry-phase ethylene/1-hexene copolymerisation studies, a decrease in polymerisation activity and polymer molecular weights compared to ethylene homopolymerisation is observed. Compared to many solid supported system, these complexes all display high 1-hexene incorporation levels up to a maximum incorporation of 14.2 mol% for sMAO-Me2SB(iPrN,I*)TiCl2). We observe a proportionate increase in 1-hexene incorporation with concentration, highlighting the ability of these catalysts to controllably tune the amount of 1-hexene incorporated into the polymer chain to produce linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) materials.

Alternating styrene-propylene and styrene-ethylene copolymers prepared by photocatalytic decarboxylation.

Project description:Synthesis of olefin-styrene copolymers with defined architecture is challenging due to the limitations associated with the inherent reactivity ratios for these monomers in radical or metal-catalyzed polymerizations. Herein, we developed a straightforward approach to alternating styrene-propylene and styrene-ethylene copolymers by combining radical polymerizations and powerful post-polymerization modification reactions. We employed reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) copolymerization between styrene derivatives and saccharin (meth)acrylamide to generate alternating copolymers. Once polymerized, the amide bond of the saccharin monomers was highly reactive toward hydrolysis, an observation exploited to obtain alternating styrene-acrylic acid/methacrylic acid copolymers. Subsequent mild decarboxylation of the (meth)acrylic acid groups in the presence of a photocatalyst and a hydrogen source under visible light resulted in the styrene-alt-ethylene/propylene copolymers. Alternating copolymers comprised of either propylene or ethylene units alternating with functional styrene derivatives were also prepared, illustrating the compatibility of this approach for functional polymer synthesis. Finally, the thermal properties of the alternating copolymers were compared to those from statistical copolymer analogs to elucidate the effect of microarchitecture and styrene substituents on the glass transition temperature.

Influence of Ultraviolet Radiation Exposure Time on Styrene-Ethylene-Butadiene-Styrene (SEBS) Copolymer.

Project description:The effect of ultraviolet radiation on styrene-ethylene-butadiene-styrene (SEBS) has been studied at different exposures times in order to obtain a better understanding of the mechanism of ageing. The polymer materials were mechanically tested and then their surfaces were analyzed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Moreover, the optical analysis of contact angle (OCA) was used to evaluate the surface energy (?s) and the yellowing index (YI) and attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) were used to observe structural and physical changes in aging SEBS. The results obtained for the SEBS, in relation to the duration of exposure, showed superficial changes that cause a decrease in the surface energy (?s) and, therefore, a decrease in surface roughness. This led to a reduction in mechanical performance, decreasing the tensile strength by about 50% for exposure times of around 200 h.

"Living" Polymerization of Ethylene and 1-Hexene Using Novel Binuclear Pd⁻Diimine Catalysts.

Project description:We report the synthesis of two novel binuclear Pd⁻diimine catalysts and their unique behaviors in initiating "living" polymerization of ethylene and 1-hexene. These two binuclear catalysts, [(N^N)Pd(CH₂)₃C(O)O(CH₂)mO(O)C(CH₂)₃Pd(N^N)](SbF₆)₂ (3a: m = 4, 3b: m = 6) (N^N≡ArN=C(Me)⁻(Me)C=NAr, Ar≡2,6⁻(iPr)₂C₆H₃), were synthesized by simply reacting [(N^N)Pd(CH₃)(N≡CMe)]SbF₆ (1) with diacrylates, 1,4-butanediol diacrylate and 1,6-hexanediol diacrylate, respectively. Their unique binuclear structure with two identical Pd⁻diimine acrylate chelates covalently linked together through an ester linkage was confirmed by NMR and single crystal XRD measurements. Ethylene "living" polymerizations were carried out at 5 °C and under ethylene pressure of 400 and 100 psi, respectively, with the binuclear catalysts, along with a mononuclear chelate catalyst, [(N^N)Pd(CH₂)₃C(O)OMe]SbF₆ (2), for comparison. All the polyethylenes produced with both binuclear catalysts show bimodal molecular weight distribution with the number-average molecular weight of the higher molecular weight portion being approximately twice that of the lower molecular weight portion. The results demonstrate the presence of monofunctional chain growing species resembling catalyst 2, in addition to the expected bifunctional species leading to bifunctional "living" polymerization, in the polymerization systems. Both types of chain growing species exhibit "living" characteristics under the studied conditions, leading to the simultaneous linear increase of molecular weight in both portions. However, when applied for the "living" polymerization of 1-hexene, the binuclear catalyst 3a leads to polymers with only monomodal molecular weight distribution, indicating the sole presence of monofunctional chain growing species. These two binuclear catalysts are the first Pd⁻diimine catalysts capable of initiating bifunctional ethylene "living" polymerization.

Thermal Degradation Kinetics Analysis of Ethylene-Propylene Copolymer and EP-1-Hexene Terpolymer.

Project description:LLDPE is a less crystalline polymer with vast industrial and domestic applications. It is imperative to understand the synthesis, processing conditions, and thermal degradation mechanism of the co- as well as terpolymers. This paper reports the in-situ synthesis and thermal degradation studies of the ethylene-propylene copolymer and ethylene-propylene-1-hexene terpolymer and its nanocomposite with ZnAL LDH sheets. The 1-hexene dosing during the in-situ process influenced the product yield and immensely affected the thermal stability of the resultant polymer. One milliliter 1-hexene in-situ addition increased the product yield by 170 percent, while the temperature at 10 percent weight loss in TGA was dropped by about 60 °C. While only 0.3 weight percent ZnAL LDH addition in the terpolymer improved the thermal stability by 10 °C. A master plot technique and combined kinetics analysis (CKA) were deployed to access the thermal degradation mechanism of the synthesized polymers.

Keto-Polyethylenes with Controlled Crystallinity and Materials Properties from Catalytic Ethylene-CO-Norbornene Terpolymerization.

Project description:Recent advances in Ni(II) catalyzed, nonalternating catalytic copolymerization of ethylene with carbon monoxide (CO) enable the synthesis of in-chain keto-functionalized polyethylenes (keto-PEs) with high-density polyethylene-like materials properties. Addition of norbornene as a bulky, noncrystallizable comonomer during catalytic polymerization allows tuning of the crystallinity in these keto-PE materials by randomly incorporated norbornene units in the polymer chain, while molecular weights are not adversely affected. Such crystallinity-reduced keto-PEs are characterized as softer materials with better ductility and may therefore be more suited for, e.g., potential film applications.

Solvent-free synthesis of novel para-menthane-3,8-diol ester derivatives from citronellal using a polymer-supported scandium triflate catalyst.

Project description:The use of natural resources as a chemical feedstock for the synthesis of added-value products is gaining interest; as such we report an environmentally friendly method for the synthesis of para-menthane-3,8-diol from natural citronellal oil in 96% yield, under solvent free aqueous conditions. The acylation of para-menthane-3,8-diol with various acid anhydrides over polymer-supported scandium triflate (PS-Sc(OTf)3) catalyst was subsequently developed, where both hydroxy groups of para-menthane-3,8-diol could be simultaneous acylated under mild reaction conditions to form the corresponding diesters in good yields. The advantages of this method include a simple procedure from natural resources, using solvent-free reaction conditions.

New activation mechanism for half-sandwich organometallic anticancer complexes.

Project description:The Cp x C-H protons in certain organometallic RhIII half-sandwich anticancer complexes [(η5-Cp x )Rh(N,N')Cl]+, where Cp x = Cp*, phenyl or biphenyl-Me4Cp, and N,N' = bipyridine, dimethylbipyridine, or phenanthroline, can undergo rapid sequential deuteration of all 15 Cp* methyl protons in aqueous media at ambient temperature. DFT calculations suggest a mechanism involving abstraction of a Cp* proton by the Rh-hydroxido complex, followed by sequential H/D exchange, with the Cp* rings behaving like dynamic molecular 'twisters'. The calculations reveal the crucial role of pπ orbitals of N,N'-chelated ligands in stabilizing deprotonated Cp x ligands, and also the accessibility of RhI-fulvene intermediates. They also provide insight into why biologically-inactive complexes such as [(Cp*)RhIII(en)Cl]+ and [(Cp*)IrIII(bpy)Cl]+ do not have activated Cp* rings. The thiol tripeptide glutathione (γ-l-Glu-l-Cys-Gly, GSH) and the activated dienophile N-methylmaleimide, (NMM) did not undergo addition reactions with the proposed RhI-fulvene, although they were able to control the extent of Cp* deuteration. We readily trapped and characterized RhI-fulvene intermediates by Diels-Alder [4+2] cyclo-addition reactions with the natural biological dienes isoprene and conjugated (9Z,11E)-linoleic acid in aqueous media, including cell culture medium, the first report of a Diels-Alder reaction of a metal-bound fulvene in aqueous solution. These findings will introduce new concepts into the design of organometallic Cp* anticancer complexes with novel mechanisms of action.
