First report of bacteremia by Asaia bogorensis, in a patient with a history of intravenous-drug abuse.

ABSTRACT: We report the first documented case of bacteremia caused by Asaia bogorensis in a young patient with a history of intravenous-drug abuse. A. bogorensis was identified by sequencing the 16S rRNA gene. The isolate was exceptionally resistant to almost all antibiotics that are routinely tested for gram-negative rods but was susceptible to netilmicin, gentamicin, and doxycycline.

Identification of Carotenoids and Isoprenoid Quinones from Asaia lannensis and Asaia bogorensis.

Project description:The aim of the study was to identify and quantitatively assess of carotenoids and isoprenoid quinones biosynthesized by six different strains of acetic acid bacteria, belonging to genus Asaia, that are common beverage-spoiling bacteria in Europe. Bacterial cultures were conducted in a laboratory liquid culture minimal medium with 2% sucrose. Carotenoids and isoprenoid quinones were investigated using UHPLC-DAD-ESI-MS analysis. In general, tested strains of Asaia spp. were able to produce 10 carotenoids and 3 isoprenoid quinones: menaquinone-7, menaquinone-8, and ubiquinone-10. The main identified carotenoids in Asaia lannensis strains were phytofluene, neurosporene, ?-carotene, while for Asaia bogorensis, neurosporene, canthaxanthin, and zeaxanthin were noted. What is more, tested Asaia spp. were able to produce myxoxanthophyll, which has so far been identified primarily in cyanobacteria. The results show that A. lannensis are characterized by statistically higher concentrations of produced carotenoids, as well as a greater variety of these compounds. We have noted that carotenoids were not only accumulated by bacterial cells, but also some strains of A. lannensis produced extracellular carotenoids.

Case report: isolated pulmonary valve endocarditis in a 39-year-old patient with intravenous drug abuse.

Project description:BackgroundIsolated pulmonary valve endocarditis is a very rare form of right-sided infective endocarditis. Due to the anatomy, in most cases, just the tricuspid valve is involved. Diagnosis can be challenging because of non-specific symptoms (fever, dyspnoea, haemoptysis, and pleuritic chest pain) and difficulty of detection by echocardiography. Risk factors include intravenous drug abuse, congenital heart disorders, alcohol abuse, male sex and central venous catheters, or pacemaker leads.Case summaryA 39-year-old homeless male patient, who was a current intravenous drug user, presented with fever, dyspnoea, and haemoptysis. The chest X-ray showed bilateral infiltrates. Empiric antibiotic treatment was initiated. Blood cultures showed the presence of Streptococcus dysgalactiae. Atypical causes of pneumonia were excluded. Systemic embolism was suspected, and a computed tomography scan of brain, thorax, and abdomen was performed. Multiple septic embolic lesions were detected in both lungs. Echocardiography revealed an isolated pulmonary valve endocarditis. Penicillin G and gentamycin were administered intravenously for a duration of 6 and 2 weeks, respectively. The patient was discharged in stable condition but did not return for outpatient clinical appointments.DiscussionTo detect rare causes of right-sided infective endocarditis, repeated echocardiograms with special focus on the pulmonary valve may be required. Usually, antibiotic treatment alone leads to recovery. In special situations (heart failure, septic shock, or large vegetation size) surgery is required. Due to the high risk of postoperative complications, surgery in intravenous drug users should be avoided if possible.

Attachment of Asaia bogorensis originating in fruit-flavored water to packaging materials.

Project description:The objective of this study was to investigate the adhesion of isolated spoilage bacteria to packaging materials used in the food industry. Microorganisms were isolated from commercial fruit-flavored mineral water in plastic bottles with flocks as a visual defect. The Gram-negative rods were identified using the molecular method through the amplification of a partial region of the 16S rRNA gene. Based on the sequence identity (99.6%) between the spoilage organism and a reference strain deposited in GenBank, the spoilage isolate was identified as Asaia bgorensis. Experiments on bacterial adhesion were conducted using plates made of glass and polystyrene (packaging materials commonly used in the beverage industry). Cell adhesion ability was determined using luminometry, plate count, and the microscopic method. The strain of A. bogorensis was characterized by strong adhesion properties which were dependent on the surface type, with the highest cell adhesion detected on polystyrene.

Vogesella perlucida-induced bacteremia in an advanced-age patient: first case report.

Project description:BACKGROUND:Vogesella species are common aquatic, Gram-negative rod-shaped bacteria, originally described in 1997. Vogesella perlucida was first isolated from spring water in 2008. Furthermore, bacterial pathogenicity of Vogesella perlucida has never been reported. Here, we report the first case of rare Vogesella perlucida-induced bacteremia in an advanced-age patient with many basic diseases and history of dexamethasone abuse. CASE PRESENTATION:A 71-year-old female was admitted with inflamed upper and lower limbs, rubefaction, pain and fever (about 40?°C). She had been injured in a fall at a vegetable market and then touched river snails with her injury hands. A few days later, soft tissue infection of the patient developed and worsened. Non-pigmented colonies were isolated from blood cultures of the patient. Initially, Vogesella perlucida was wrongly identified as Sphingomonas paucimobilis by Vitek-2 system with GN card. Besides, we failed to obtain an acceptable identification by the MALDI-TOF analysis. Finally, the isolated strain was identified as Vogesella perlucida by 16S rRNA gene sequences. In addition, the patient recovered well after a continuous treatment of levofloxacin for 12?days. CONCLUSION:Traditional microbiological testing system may be inadequate in the diagnosis of rare pathogenic bacteria. Applications of molecular diagnostics techniques have great advantages in clinical microbiology laboratory. By using 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, we report the the first case of rare Vogesella perlucida-induced bacteremia.

Project description:We report the first case of Gordonibacter pamelaeae bacteremia, identified by phenotypic tests and 16S rRNA sequencing in a patient with disseminated rectosigmoid carcinoma and responsive to amoxicillin-clavulanate. The bacterium was a nonsporulating, anaerobic, gram-positive, nonmotile, coccobacillus that was catalase, arginine dihydrolase, and arginine acrylamidase positive. The gastrointestinal tract is probably its reservoir.

Central nervous system fungal infection in a young male with a history of intravenous drug abuse and hepatitis C.

Project description:A young male, with a known history of hepatitis C and heroin abuse, was admitted to the emergency department with altered sensorium, left-sided weakness, and no meningeal signs. Initial computed tomography imaging showed hypodensity involving right basal ganglia with mass effect but no hemorrhage. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed multiple nonenhancing small foci of restricted diffusion involving the right basal ganglia, T2 and FLAIR hyperintensity within the right basal ganglia, and internal capsule with mild surrounding edema. The patient was treated for encephalitis and atypical stroke given the history of intravenous drug abuse. Follow-up imaging showed worsening of the brain lesions, with involvement of the contralateral basal ganglia with necrosis and peripheral enhancement. Brain biopsy was ultimately performed and suggested infection with Aspergillus species and associated parenchymal infarction. The patient was treated with voriconazole with subsequent significant clinical improvement.
