Oligomannan synthesis using ionic liquid supported glycosylation.

ABSTRACT: The synthesis of complex oligosaccharides has been a challenge for researchers. Herein, we describe a strategy for the synthesis of an activated oligomannan 1 that employs ionic liquid (IL) support glycosylation methodology on an IL-tagged mannosyl fluoride donor. This method is capable of rapidly producing linear alpha(1-->6) oligomannan thioglycosides in a convenient and cost-effective manner without the need of column purification after each glycosylation step.

One-Pot Synthesis of PtNi Alloy Nanoparticle-Supported Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes in an Ionic Liquid Using a Staircase Heating Process.

Project description:High-performance PtNi alloy nanoparticle-supported multiwalled carbon nanotube composite (PtNi/MWCNT) electrocatalysts can be prepared via one-pot preparation for oxygen reduction reaction. This route of preparation utilizes the pyrolytic decomposition of metal precursors, such as Pt(acac)2 with Ni precursors, nickel bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide (Ni[Tf2N]2) or nickel acetylacetonate (Ni(acac)2), in an ionic liquid (IL), N,N,N-trimethyl-N-propylammonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide ([N1,1,1,3][Tf2N]). Currently, there is insufficient information concerning the effect of difference in preparation conditions on the formation mechanism and catalytic activity of PtNi/MWCNT. In this article, a staircase heating process was used to investigate the PtNi alloy nanoparticle formation mechanism and catalytic activity of the resulting PtNi/MWCNT. We found that the alloy formation process, composition, and crystal structure, which directly affect the electrocatalytic activity, strongly depended on the Ni precursor species and heating process. The catalytic performance of certain PtNi/MWCNTs collected during the staircase heating process was better than that of PtNi/MWCNTs produced via the conventional heating process.

Water Purification and Microplastics Removal Using Magnetic Polyoxometalate-Supported Ionic Liquid Phases (magPOM-SILPs).

Project description:Filtration is an established water-purification technology. However, due to low flow rates, the filtration of large volumes of water is often not practical. Herein, we report an alternative purification approach in which a magnetic nanoparticle composite is used to remove organic, inorganic, microbial, and microplastics pollutants from water. The composite is based on a polyoxometalate ionic liquid (POM-IL) adsorbed onto magnetic microporous core-shell Fe2 O3 /SiO2 particles, giving a magnetic POM-supported ionic liquid phase (magPOM-SILP). Efficient, often quantitative removal of several typical surface water pollutants is reported together with facile removal of the particles using a permanent magnet. Tuning of the composite components could lead to new materials for centralized and decentralized water purification systems.

Study of Alginate-Supported Ionic Liquid and Pd Catalysts.

Project description:New catalytic materials, based on palladium immobilized in ionic liquid supported on alginate, were elaborated. Alginate was associated with gelatin for the immobilization of ionic liquids (ILs) and the binding of palladium. These catalytic materials were designed in the form of highly porous monoliths (HPMs), in order to be used in a column reactor. The catalytic materials were tested for the hydrogenation of 4-nitroaniline (4-NA) in the presence of formic acid as hydrogen donor. The different parameters for the elaboration of the catalytic materials were studied and their impact analyzed in terms of microstructures, palladium sorption properties and catalytic performances. The characteristics of the biopolymer (proportion of β-D-mannuronic acid (M) and α-L-guluronic acid (G) in the biopolymer defined by the M/G ratio), the concentration of the porogen agent, and the type of coagulating agent significantly influenced catalytic performances. The freezing temperature had a significant impact on structural properties, but hardly affected the catalytic rate. Cellulose fibers were incorporated as mechanical strengthener into the catalytic materials, and allowed to enhance mechanical properties and catalytic efficiency but required increasing the amount of hydrogen donor for catalysis.

Synthesis of 1,2,3-Triazolium Ionic Liquid-Supported Chiral Imidazolidinones and Their Application in Asymmetric Alkylation Reaction.

Project description:New 1,2,3-triazolium ionic liquid-supported chiral imidazolidinones were developed. The feasibility of the ionic liquid-supported imidazolidinones as chiral auxiliaries was demonstrated in sequential propionylation-alkylation-cleavage reactions, which provided the chiral product with good to excellent chemical yields (up to 90%) and high selectivities (up to 94% ee). The progress of the reactions could be monitored by TLC and NMR, and the ionic liquid-supported chiral auxiliaries could be recovered by simple extraction.

Spectroscopic studies of amino acid ionic liquid-supported Schiff bases.

Project description:Amino acid ionic liquid-supported Schiff bases, derivatives of salicylaldehyde and various amino acids (L-threonine, L-valine, L-leucine, L-isoleucine and L-histidine) have been investigated by means of various spectroscopic techniques (NMR, UV-Vis, IR, MS) and deuterium isotope effects on ¹³C-NMR chemical shifts. The results have shown that in all studied amino acid ionic liquid-supported Schiff bases (except the L-histidine derivative) a proton transfer equilibrium exists and the presence of the COO⁻ group stabilizes the proton transferred NH-form.

Porphyrinic Ionic Liquid Dyes: Synthesis and Characterization.

Project description:Four porphyrinic ionic liquids and four higher melting salts (>100 °C) were synthesized as potential photosensitizers from highly symmetric porphyrins by introducing alkyl chains and exchanging anions to tune their solubility and singlet oxygen generation capability. Among the synthesized compounds was 5,10,15,20-tetra(4-dodecylpyridinum)porphyrin tetrakis-bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)-amide, a room-temperature ionic liquid that could be crystallized as a solvate with nitrobenzene.

Ionic liquid-supported magnetite nanoparticles as electrode modifier materials for estrogens sensing.

Project description:This paper reports the application of a carbon paste electrode modified with magnetite nanoparticles and the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate in the electroanalytical determination of 17?-estradiol and estriol. These estrogens are potential endocrine disruptors and thus it is relevant the development of devices for their monitoring. Transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and zeta potential techniques were applied to characterization of the modifier materials. In cyclic voltammetry experiments, irreversible oxidation peaks were observed for 17?-estradiol and estriol at +0.320?V and +0.400?V, respectively. The anodic currents obtained were approximately three times greater than those provided by the unmodified electrode due to the presence of magnetic nanoparticles and the ionic liquid, which improved the sensitivity of modified electrode. For the analysis, the parameters of the square-wave voltammetry (scan increment, amplitude and frequency) were optimized by Box-Behnken factorial design for each estrogen. For 17?-estradiol in B-R buffer pH 12.0, the calibration plot was linear from 0.10 to 1.0??mol L-1, with a detection limit of 50.0 nmol L-1. For estriol in B-R buffer pH 11.0, the linear range was 1.0 to 10.0??mol L-1, with a detection limit of 300.0 nmol L-1. The modified electrode was applied in the determination of 17?-estradiol and estriol in pharmaceutical formulations and the results were comparable to those obtained using UV/VIS spectrometry. Statistical tests were applied to evaluate the results and it was concluded that there was no significant difference regarding the precision and accuracy of the data provided by the two methods.

Synthesis of three advanced biofuels from ionic liquid-pretreated switchgrass using engineered Escherichia coli.

Project description:One approach to reducing the costs of advanced biofuel production from cellulosic biomass is to engineer a single microorganism to both digest plant biomass and produce hydrocarbons that have the properties of petrochemical fuels. Such an organism would require pathways for hydrocarbon production and the capacity to secrete sufficient enzymes to efficiently hydrolyze cellulose and hemicellulose. To demonstrate how one might engineer and coordinate all of the necessary components for a biomass-degrading, hydrocarbon-producing microorganism, we engineered a microorganism naïve to both processes, Escherichia coli, to grow using both the cellulose and hemicellulose fractions of several types of plant biomass pretreated with ionic liquids. Our engineered strains express cellulase, xylanase, beta-glucosidase, and xylobiosidase enzymes under control of native E. coli promoters selected to optimize growth on model cellulosic and hemicellulosic substrates. Furthermore, our strains grow using either the cellulose or hemicellulose components of ionic liquid-pretreated biomass or on both components when combined as a coculture. Both cellulolytic and hemicellulolytic strains were further engineered with three biofuel synthesis pathways to demonstrate the production of fuel substitutes or precursors suitable for gasoline, diesel, and jet engines directly from ionic liquid-treated switchgrass without externally supplied hydrolase enzymes. This demonstration represents a major advance toward realizing a consolidated bioprocess. With improvements in both biofuel synthesis pathways and biomass digestion capabilities, our approach could provide an economical route to production of advanced biofuels.
