Diabetes mellitus accelerates cardiovascular microangiopathies and atherosclerosis, which are a consequence of hyperglycemia. The aldose reductase (AR) polyol pathway contributes to these microvascular complications, but how it mediates vascular damage in response to hyperglycemia is less understood.
