Project description:Simulation of self-recovery and diversity of natural photonic crystal (PC) structures remain great challenges for artificial PC materials. Motivated by the dynamic characteristics of PC nanostructures, here, we present a new strategy for the design of hydrogel-based artificial PC materials with reversible interactions in the periodic nanostructures. The dynamic PC hydrogels, derived from self-assembled microgel colloidal crystals, were tactfully constructed by reversible crosslinking of adjacent microgels in the ordered structure via phenylboronate covalent chemistry. As proof of concept, three types of dynamic colloidal PC hydrogels with different structural colors were prepared. All the hydrogels showed perfect self-healing ability against physical damage. Moreover, dynamic crosslinking within the microgel crystals enabled shear-thinning injection of the PC hydrogels through a syringe (indicating injectability or printability), followed by rapid recovery of the structural colors. In short, in addition to the great significance in biomimicry of self-healing function of natural PC materials, our work provides a facile strategy for the construction of diversified artificial PC materials for different applications such as chem-/biosensing, counterfeit prevention, optical display, and energy conversion.

Project description:The connection between a structured environment and the decay kinetics of an embedded emitter is explored by copolymerizing a naphthalimide derivative within polystyrene-based nanoparticles. The nanoparticles spontaneously self-assemble into a crystalline colloidal array, resulting in a partial photonic bandgap, or rejection wavelength, in the visible regime. The rejection wavelength of the liquid ordered array can be shifted across the emission spectrum of the nanoparticles by dilution with deionized water, which increases the interparticle spacing of the array. Time-resolved fluorescence of the ordered array at various rejection wavelength conditions is monitored at high- and low-energy electronic transition frequencies across the emission spectrum of the naphthalimide-copolymerized nanoparticles. Careful attention is given to the reference systems that are used to quantify photonic effects, the wavelengths at which decay kinetics are monitored, and the quantum yield of the naphthalimide-derived emitter. Increased and decreased excited-state lifetimes are observed, depending on the position of the rejection wavelength in relation to the emission of the emitter and the monitored wavelength, revealing critical insights in the context of quantum light-matter interactions and opportunities for strategic control over emitter decay pathways.

Project description:Colloidal CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QD) enhanced micro-LEDs with sizes varying from 10 to 100 μm were fabricated and measured. The direct photolithography of quantum-dot-contained photoresists can place this color conversion layer on the top of an InGaN-based micro-LED and have a high throughput and semiconductor-grade precision. Both the uncoated and coated devices were characterized, and we determined that much higher brightness of a QD-enhanced micro-LED under the same current level was observed when compared to its AlGaInP counterpart. The color stability across the device sizes and injection currents were also examined. QD LEDs show low redshift of emission wavelength, which was recorded within 1 nm in some devices, with increasing current density from 1 to 300 A/cm2. On the other hand, the light conversion efficiency (LCE) of QD-enhanced micro-LEDs was detected to decrease under the high current density or when the device is small. The angular intensities of QD-enhanced micro-LEDs were measured and compared with blue devices. With the help of the black matrix and omnidirectional light emission of colloidal QD, we observed that the angular intensities of the red and blue colors are close to Lambertian distribution, which can lead to a low color shift in all angles. From our study, the QD-enhanced micro-LEDs can effectively increase the brightness, the color stability, and the angular color match, and thus play a promising role in future micro-display technology.

Project description:The monomer surface mobility is the single most important parameter that decides the nucleation density and morphology of islands during thin-film growth. During template-assisted surface growth in particular, low surface mobilities can prevent monomers from reaching target sites and this results in a partial to complete loss of nucleation control. Whereas in atomic systems a broad range of surface mobilities can be readily accessed, for colloids, owing to their large size, this window is substantially narrow and therefore imposes severe restrictions in extending template-assisted growth techniques to steer their self-assembly. Here, we circumvented this fundamental limitation by designing templates with spatially varying feature sizes, in this case moiré patterns, which in the presence of short-range depletion attraction presented surface energy gradients for the diffusing colloids. The templates serve a dual purpose: first, directing the particles to target sites by enhancing their surface mean-free paths and second, dictating the size and symmetry of the growing crystallites. Using optical microscopy, we directly followed the nucleation and growth kinetics of colloidal islands on these surfaces at the single-particle level. We demonstrate nucleation control, with high fidelity, in a regime that has remained unaccessed in theoretical, numerical, and experimental studies on atoms and molecules as well. Our findings pave the way for fabricating nontrivial surface architectures composed of complex colloids and nanoparticles as well.

Project description:True thermodynamic stability of a solid colloidal dispersion is generally unexpected, so much that thorough experimental validation of proposed stable systems remains incomplete. Such dispersions are under investigated and would be of interest due to their long-term stability and insensitivity to preparation pathway. We apply classical nucleation theory (CNT) to such colloidal systems, providing a relationship which links the size-dependent interfacial free energy density of the particles to their size distribution, and use this expression in the fitting of previously reported size distributions for putatively thermodynamically stable nanoparticles. Experimental data from a gold-thiol system exhibiting inverse coarsening or "digestive ripening" can be well-described in terms of a power-law dependence of the interfacial free energy γ on radius based on capacitive charging of the nanoparticles, going as r-3 , as suggested by prior authors. Data from magnetite nanoparticles in highly basic solutions also can be well-fit using the CNT relation, but with γ going as r-2 . Slightly better fits are possible if the power of the radius is non-integral, but we stress that more complex models of γ will require richer data sets to avoid the problem of overfitting. Some parameters of the fits are still robustly at odds with earlier models that implicitly assumed absolute thermodynamic stability: first, the extrapolated free energy density of the flat surface in these systems is small and positive, rather than strongly negative; second, the shape of the distributions indicates the solution phase to be supersaturated in monomer relative to the bulk, and thus that these two systems may only be metastable. For future work, we derive expressions for the important statistical thermodynamic and chemical parameters of the interface energy in terms of 1) the surfactant concentration, 2) the temperature dependence, and 3) the concentrations of particles in the tail of the distribution.

Project description:Photonic crystal (PhC) phosphor, in which the phosphor material is periodically modulated for an enhancement in color-conversion efficiency via resonant absorption of excitation photons, is a paradigm-shifting structural phosphor platform. Two-dimensional (2D) square-lattice PhC phosphor is currently considered the most advanced platform because of not only its high efficiency, but also its immunity to excitation polarization. In the present study, two major modifications are made to further improve the performance of the 2D PhC phosphor: increasing the refractive index contrast and planarizing the surface. The index contrast is improved by replacing the PhC backbone material with TiO2 whereas the surface planarization is achieved by removing excessive colloidal quantum dots from the surface. In comparison with the reference phosphor, the upgraded PhC phosphor exhibits ~59 times enhanced absorption (in simulations) and ~7 times enhanced emission (in experiments), both of which are unprecedentedly high. Our results not only brighten the viability and applicability of the PhC phosphor but also spur the phosphor development through structural engineering of phosphor materials.

Project description:By performing isothermal-isochoric Monte Carlo simulations with depletion force, the author investigated the dependence of the epitxial layer structure on the differences in the particle size between the substrate in colloidal heteroepitaxy. By changing the size of epitaxial particles and performing simulations comprehensively, various structures including the structures observed in a experiment, such as a honeycomb, one created by hexagonal heptamers, and one consisting of both pentagonal tiles and triangular tiles, were created. When the ratio of particle sizes between the epitxial layer and substrate takes a specific value, two types of hexagonal structures were created. One is the hexagonal layer parallel to the substrate layer and the other layer is rotated by 60[Formula: see text] from the substrate layer. The former structure was created over a wide range of particle-size ratios, whereas the latter structure was created when the particle-size ratio was only around the specific ratio, and it seemed a metastable structure.

Project description:The Kuramoto model is a mathematical model for describing the collective synchronization phenomena of coupled oscillators. We theoretically demonstrate that an array of coupled photonic crystal lasers emulates the Kuramoto model with non-delayed nearest-neighbor coupling (the local Kuramoto model). Our novel strategy employs indirect coupling between lasers via additional cold cavities. By installing cold cavities between laser cavities, we avoid the strong coupling of lasers and realize ideal mutual injection-locking with effective non-delayed dissipative coupling. First, after discussing the limit cycle interpretation of laser oscillation, we demonstrate the synchronization of two indirectly coupled lasers by numerically simulating coupled-mode equations. Second, by performing a phase reduction analysis, we show that laser dynamics in the proposed device can be mapped to the local Kuramoto model. Finally, we briefly demonstrate that a chain of indirectly coupled photonic crystal lasers actually emulates the one-dimensional local Kuramoto chain. We also argue that our proposed structure, which consists of periodically aligned cold cavities and laser cavities, will best be realized by using state-of-the-art buried multiple quantum well photonic crystals.

Project description:Topological photonics have provided new insights for the manipulation of light. Analogous to electrons in topological insulators, photons travelling through the surface of a topological photonic structure or the interface of two photonic structures with different topological phases are free from backscattering caused by structural imperfections or disorder. This exotic nature of the topological edge state (TES) is truly beneficial for nanophotonic devices that suffer from structural irregularities generated during device fabrication. Although various topological states and device concepts have been demonstrated in photonic systems, lasers based on a topological photonic crystal (PhC) cavity array with a wavelength-scale modal volume have not been explored. We investigated TESs in a PhC nanocavity array in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. Upon optical excitation, the topological PhC cavity array realised using an InP-based multiple-quantum-well epilayer spontaneously exhibits lasing peaks at the topological edge and bulk states. TES characteristics, including the modal robustness caused by immunity to scattering, are confirmed from the emission spectra and near-field imaging and by theoretical simulations and calculations.
