Reactive p-block cations stabilized by weakly coordinating anions.

Project description:The chemistry of the p-block elements is a huge playground for fundamental and applied work. With their bonding from electron deficient to hypercoordinate and formally hypervalent, the p-block elements represent an area to find terra incognita. Often, the formation of cations that contain p-block elements as central ingredient is desired, for example to make a compound more Lewis acidic for an application or simply to prove an idea. This review has collected the reactive p-block cations (rPBC) with a comprehensive focus on those that have been published since the year 2000, but including the milestones and key citations of earlier work. We include an overview on the weakly coordinating anions (WCAs) used to stabilize the rPBC and give an overview to WCA selection, ionization strategies for rPBC-formation and finally list the rPBC ordered in their respective group from 13 to 18. However, typical, often more organic ion classes that constitute for example ionic liquids (imidazolium, ammonium, etc.) were omitted, as were those that do not fulfill the - naturally subjective -"reactive"-criterion of the rPBC. As a rule, we only included rPBC with crystal structure and only rarely refer to important cations published without crystal structure. This collection is intended for those who are simply interested what has been done or what is possible, as well as those who seek advice on preparative issues, up to people having a certain application in mind, where the knowledge on the existence of a rPBC that might play a role as an intermediate or active center may be useful.

Hydrophilic Ionic Liquid Mixtures of Weakly and Strongly Coordinating Anions with and without Water.

Project description:With the aid of ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, we investigate an ionic liquid (IL) mixture composed of three components 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium [C4C1Im]+, tetrafluoroborate [BF4]-, and chloride [Cl]- without and with water. In the pure IL mixture, we observe an already complex network of interactions between cations and anions, and addition of water to the system even extends the complexity. Observed number integrals show that the coordination number between cations and anions is reduced in the system with water compared to that in the pure system. Further studies show that the Coulombic network of the strongly coordinating anion [Cl]- is disturbed by water, while that of the weakly coordinating anion [BF4]- is not. These observations can also be confirmed by the Voronoi polyhedra analysis, which shows that the polar network of microheterogeneous IL collapses by the introduction of water. Hydrogen-acceptor interactions revealed that the [Cl]- anions are transferred from being situated in the IL to the water continuum, while [BF4]- is almost unperturbed; these effects mainly influence the interplay of the ionic liquid network.

On Silylated Oxonium and Sulfonium Ions and Their Interaction with Weakly Coordinating Borate Anions.

Project description:Attempts have been made to prepare salts with the labile tris(trimethylsilyl)chalconium ions, [(Me3 Si)3 E]+ (E=O, S), by reacting [Me3 Si-H-SiMe3 ][B(C6 F5 )4 ] and Me3 Si[CB] (CB- =carborate=[CHB11 H5 Cl6 ]- , [CHB11 Cl11 ]- ) with Me3 Si-E-SiMe3 . In the reaction of Me3 Si-O-SiMe3 with [Me3 Si-H-SiMe3 ][B(C6 F5 )4 ], a ligand exchange was observed in the [Me3 Si-H-SiMe3 ]+ cation leading to the surprising formation of the persilylated [(Me3 Si)2 (Me2 (H)Si)O]+ oxonium ion in a formal [Me2 (H)Si]+ instead of the desired [Me3 Si]+ transfer reaction. In contrast, the expected homoleptic persilylated [(Me3 Si)3 S]+ ion was formed and isolated as [B(C6 F5 )4 ]- and [CB]- salt, when Me3 Si-S-SiMe3 was treated with either [Me3 Si-H-SiMe3 ][B(C6 F5 )4 ] or Me3 Si[CB]. However, the addition of Me3 Si[CB] to Me3 Si-O-SiMe3 unexpectedly led to the release of Me4 Si with simultaneous formation of a cyclic dioxonium dication of the type [Me3 Si-?O-SiMe2 ]2 [CB]2 in an anion-mediated reaction. DFT studies on structure, bonding and thermodynamics of the [(Me3 Si)3 E]+ and [(Me3 Si)2 (Me2 (H)Si)E]+ ion formation are presented as well as mechanistic investigations on the template-driven transformation of the [(Me3 Si)3 E]+ ion into a cyclic dichalconium dication [Me3 Si-?E-SiMe2 ]2 2+ .

The Influence of Weakly Coordinating Cations on the O-H⋅⋅⋅O- Hydrogen Bond of Silanol-Silanolate Anions.

Project description:The reaction of a saline phosphazenium hydroxide hydrate with siloxanes led to a novel kind of silanol-silanolate anions. The weakly coordinating behavior of the cation renders the formation of silanol-silanolate hydrogen bonds possible, which otherwise suffer from detrimental silanolate-oxygen cation interactions. We investigated the influence of various weakly coordinating cations on silanol-silanolate motifs, particularly with regard to different cation sizes. While large cations favor the formation of intramolecular hydrogen bonds resulting in cyclic structures, the less bulky tetramethyl ammonium cation encourages the formation of polyanionic silanol-silanolate chains in the solid state.

Broad-Scope Rh-Catalyzed Inverse-Sonogashira Reaction Directed by Weakly Coordinating Groups.

Project description:We report the alkynylation of C(sp2)-H bonds with bromoalkynes (inverse-Sonogashira reaction) directed by synthetically useful ester, ketone, and ether groups under rhodium catalysis. Other less common directing groups such as amine, thioether, sulfoxide, sulfone, phenol ester, and carbamate are also suitable directing groups. Mechanistic studies indicate that the reaction proceeds by a turnover-limiting C-H activation step via an electrophilic-type substitution.

Pd(II)-catalyzed C-H functionalizations directed by distal weakly coordinating functional groups.

Project description:Ortho-C(sp(2))-H olefination and acetoxylation of broadly useful synthetic building blocks phenylacetyl Weinreb amides, esters, and ketones are developed without installing an additional directing group. The interplay between the distal weak coordination and the ligand-acceleration is crucial for these reactions to proceed under mild conditions. The tolerance of longer distance between the target C-H bonds and the directing functional groups also allows for the functionalizations of more distal C-H bonds in hydrocinnamoyl ketones, Weinreb amides, and biphenyl Weinreb amides. Mechanistically, the coordination of these carbonyl groups and the bisdentate amino acid ligand with Pd(II) centers provides further evidence for our early hypothesis that the carbonyl groups of the potassium carboxylate are responsible for the directed C-H activation of carboxylic acids.

High yield accelerated reactions in nonvolatile microthin films: chemical derivatization for analysis of single-cell intracellular fluid.

Project description:The identification of trace components from biological media can require derivatization under mild conditions for successful analysis by mass spectrometry (MS). When aqueous droplets (ca. 500 nL) containing a sugar and an amine as reagents are allowed to evaporate they may form long-lasting microthin films in which derivatization reactions can occur fast relative to reaction rates in bulk solution. Evidence is presented that these reactions are heterogeneous in nature and comparisons are made with reactions in pastes and in neat reagent mixtures. Moreover, these thin film reactors can be made stable for the long periods of time that may be necessary to give high product yields. The situation is typified by imine formation from reducing sugars which have reaction times of much more than 1 hour provided that small concentrations (e.g. 20 ppm) of nonvolatile solvents are included. After evaporation of almost all the water, the reaction occurs at an approximately constant rate for the first hour. The rate is two orders of magnitude faster than the reaction in the corresponding homogeneous saturated bulk solution. Conversion of the reagent to the Schiff base product is 67% to 96% efficient in these long-lasting thin films, in sharp contrast to the corresponding derivatization efficiencies in the bulk of less than 1%. This method was used to chemically derivatize and thus to identify, using tandem mass spectrometry, 29 reducing sugars in ca. 1 nL of intracellular fluid from a single onion epidermis cell. A formal description of the kinetics of reversible and irreversible second order reactions in thin films is provided. The effects of thermodynamic and kinetic factors are separated and the measured apparent acceleration factor is shown to represent the ratio of intrinsic rate constants for the microthin film reactor relative to the bulk reaction.

Noncovalent Interactions in Halogenated Pyridinium Salts of the Weakly Coordinating Anion [Al(OTeF5 )4 ].

Project description:The synthesis and the first structural characterization of the halogenated pyridinium salts [C5 F5 NH]+ , [C5 F4 ClNH]+ , [(C5 F5 N)2 H]+ , [(C5 Cl5 N)2 H]+ of the weakly coordinating anion (WCA) [Al(OTeF5 )4 ]- , showing noncovalent interactions in the solid state, are presented. The salts were characterized by the multinuclear NMR and IR spectroscopy as well as X-ray diffraction. Hirshfeld surface analysis and solid state structures reveal various intermolecular anion-π and σ-hole interactions between the corresponding halogenated pyridinium cations and the anion [Al(OTeF5 )4 ]- .

Coordinating DNA polymerase traffic during high and low fidelity synthesis.

Project description:With the discovery that organisms possess multiple DNA polymerases (Pols) displaying different fidelities, processivities, and activities came the realization that mechanisms must exist to manage the actions of these diverse enzymes to prevent gratuitous mutations. Although many of the Pols encoded by most organisms are largely accurate, and participate in DNA replication and DNA repair, a sizeable fraction display a reduced fidelity, and act to catalyze potentially error-prone translesion DNA synthesis (TLS) past lesions that persist in the DNA. Striking the proper balance between use of these different enzymes during DNA replication, DNA repair, and TLS is essential for ensuring accurate duplication of the cell's genome. This review highlights mechanisms that organisms utilize to manage the actions of their different Pols. A particular emphasis is placed on discussion of current models for how different Pols switch places with each other at the replication fork during high fidelity replication and potentially error-pone TLS.
