5-Bromo-2-iodo-1,3-dimethyl-benzene.

ABSTRACT: The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C(8)H(8)BrI, contains three independent mol-ecules. In each molecule, the Br, I and C atoms of the methyl groups lie in the benzene ring plane. Intra-molecular C-H?I hydrogen bonds result in the formation of three planar five-membered rings, which are nearly coplanar with the adjacent rings.

Project description:The bromo and iodo derivatives of a meta-bis-(1,3-oxazolin-2-yl)-substituted benzene, C16H19BrN2O2·0.15H2O (1) and C16H19IN2O2 (2), have been prepared and studied in terms of their mol-ecular and crystal structures. While the former crystallizes as a sub-hydrate, with 0.15 formula units of water and shows an almost all-planar arrangement of the three ring systems, the latter crystallizes solvate-free with the flanking heterocycles twisted considerably with respect to the central arene. Non-covalent contacts include parallel-displaced π-π inter-actions and (non-classical) hydrogen bonding for both (1) and (2), as well as relatively short I⋯N contacts for (2).

Project description:Crystals of the title compound, C(8)H(9)IO(2), were obtained from a dimethyl sulfoxide solution of 2,6-dimethoxy-benzoic acid and iodo-benzene diacetate under a nitro-gen atmosphere at 353?K. In the crystal structure, mol-ecules are linked by weak C-H?? inter-actions, generating inter-penetrating one-dimensional chains of perpendicularly oriented mol-ecules extending along [011] and [01]. Chains are also formed through non-bonding C-I?? contacts extending in the same directions, projecting a zigzag motif in view down [100]. The I?Cg distance is 3.695?(2)?Å and the C-I?Cg angle is 164.17?(14)°. The mol-ecular symmetry m coincides with the mirror plane of the space group Cmc2(1), resulting in a half-mol-ecule in the asymmetric unit (Z' = ½).

Project description:The title trihalogenated nitro-benzene derivatives, C6H2Br3NO2 and C6H2Br2INO2, crystallize in triclinic and monoclinic cells, respectively, with two mol-ecules per asymmetric unit in each case. The asymmetric unit of the tri-bromo compound features a polarized Br(δ+)⋯Br(δ-) inter-molecular halogen bond. After substitution of the Br atom in the para position with respect to the nitro group, the network of X⋯X halogen contacts is reorganized. Two inter-molecular polarized halogen bonds are then observed, which present the uncommon polarization Br(δ+)⋯I(δ-): the more electronegative site (Br) behaves as a donor and the less electronegative site (I) as an acceptor for the charge transfer.

2,5-Dimethyl-1,3-dinitro-benzene.

Project description:The title compound, C(8)H(8)N(2)O(4), was prepared via the nitration of p-xylene. The mol-ecules are stacked along the c axis in an antiparallel manner. The two nitro groups are rotated relative to the benzene ring with dihedral angles of 44.50 (7) and 31.67 (8)°. The tilt of the nitro groups allows the formation of C-H⋯O inter-actions between the ring C-H and nitro groups of adjacent mol-ecules creating puckered sheets perpendicular to the c axis. The H atoms of the methyl group in the 5-position are disordered (60° rotation) with an occupancy of 0.616 (19) for the major component. The crystal was found to be a non-merohedral twin with a twin law [-1 -0.002 0.005, 0.00031 -1 0.002, 0.118 -0.007 1] corresponding to a rotation of 180° about the reciprocal axis (001) and refined to give a minor component fraction of 0.320 (2).

The crystal structure features undulating mol-ecular sheets with the mol-ecules linked by C-H?N hydrogen bonds with one N atom acting as a bifurcated acceptor.
