Reinvestigation of the crystal structure of lautite, CuAsS.

ABSTRACT: The crystal structure of the mineral lautite (copper arsenic sulfide), CuAsS, previously described as either centrosymmetric [Pnma; Marumo & Nowacki (1964 ?). Schweiz. Miner. Petro. Mitt.44, 439-454] or noncentrosymmetric [Pna2(1); Craig & Stephenson (1965 ?). Acta Cryst.19, 543-547], was reinvestigated by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The centrosymmetric structural model reported previously was confirmed, although with improved precision for the atomic coordinates and inter-atomic distances. Lautite shows a sphalerite-derivative structure with a linking of Cu[AsS(3)], As[CuAs(2)S] and S[Cu(3)As] tetra-hedra. All atoms lie on special positions (Wyckoff position 4c, site symmetry m).

Structure reinvestigation of ?-, ?- and ?-In2S3.

Project description:Semiconducting indium sulfide (In2S3) has recently attracted considerable attention as a buffer material in the field of thin film photovoltaics. Compared with this growing interest, however, detailed characterizations of the crystal structure of this material are rather scarce and controversial. In order to close this gap, we have carried out a reinvestigation of the crystal structure of this material with an in situ X-ray diffraction study as a function of temperature using monochromatic synchrotron radiation. For the purpose of this study, high quality polycrystalline In2S3 material with nominally stoichiometric composition was synthesized at high temperatures. We found three modifications of In2S3 in the temperature range between 300 and 1300?K, with structural phase transitions at temperatures of 717?K and above 1049?K. By Rietveld refinement we extracted the crystal structure data and the temperature coefficients of the lattice constants for all three phases, including a high-temperature trigonal ?-In2S3 modification.

Reinvestigation of the crystal structure of Ca2Ce8(SiO4)6O2 apatite by Rietveld refinement.

Project description:Ca2Ln8(SiO4)6O2 apatites with Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd and Tb crystallize in space group P63/m. The crystal structure of apatite-type Ca2Ce8(SiO4)6O2 [dicalcium octa-cerium hexa-kis-(silicate) dioxide], which has been synthesized by calcination, was refined from powder X-ray diffraction data using the Rietveld method. A database survey shows that contrary to the previously published Ca2Ce8(SiO4)6O2 structure [Skakle et al. (2000 ?). Powder Diffr.15, 234-238], the cell volume of the structure reported here is consistent with those of other Ln apatites.

Project description:The mol-ecule of the title compound, C13H10ClNO, (I), which contains an intra-molecular O-H⋯N hydrogen bond, is almost planar: the dihedral angle between the two aryl rings is only 3.31 (9)°. The mol-ecules of (I) are linked into sheets by two C-H⋯π(arene) hydrogen bonds and the sheets are linked into a three-dimensional structure by O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds. Comparisons are made with the structures of a number of related compounds.

Reinvestigation of the low-temperature form of Ag(2)Se (naumannite) based on single-crystal data.

Project description:The crystal structure of the low-temperature form of synthetic naumannite [disilver(I) selenide], Ag(2)Se, has been reinvestigated based on single-crystal data. In comparison with previous powder diffraction studies, anisotropic displacement parameters are additionally reported. The structure is composed of Se layers and two crystallographically independent Ag atoms. One Ag atom lies close to the Se layer and is surrounded by four Se atoms in a distorted tetra-hedral coordination, while the second Ag atom lies between the Se layers and exhibits a [3 + 1] coordination defined by three close Se atoms, forming a trigonal plane, and one remote Se atom.

Reinvestigation of trilithium divanadium(III) tris-(orthophosphate), Li(3)V(2)(PO(4))(3), based on single-crystal X-ray data.

Project description:The structure of Li(3)V(2)(PO(4))(3) has been reinvestigated from single-crystal X-ray data. Although the results of the previous studies (all based on powder diffraction data) are comparable with our redetermination, all atoms were refined with anisotropic displacement parameters in the current study, and the resulting bond lengths are more accurate than those determined from powder diffraction data. The title compound adopts the Li(3)Fe(2)(PO(4))(3) structure type. The structure is composed of VO(6) octa-hedra and PO(4) tetra-hedra by sharing O atoms to form the three-dimensional anionic framework (?) (3)[V(2)(PO(4))(3)](3-). The positions of the Li(+) ions in the empty channels can vary depending on the synthetic conditions. Bond-valence-sum calculations showed structures that are similar to the results of the present study seem to be more stable compared with others. The classical charge balance of the title compound can be represented as [Li(+)](3)[V(3+)](2)[P(5+)](3)[O(2-)](12).

Reinvestigation of 4-methyl-anilinium dihydrogen phosphite.

Project description:The crystal structure of the title compound, C(7)H(10)N(+)·H(2)PO(3) (-), has been reported previously by Sabounchei & Naghipour [Asian J. Chem. (2003) ?, 15, 1677-1686]. A new look at this compound has revealed doubling of the unit cell. The asymmetric unit consists of two 4-methyl-anilinium cations and two dihydrogen phosphite anions. The crystal structure is built upon alternating layers of organic cations and dihydrogen phosphite anions stacked along c. The organic layer is stabilized by C-H?? interactions. Weak aromatic ?-? stacking interactions with centroid-centroid distances of 4.6147?(12), 4.6917?(12), 4.6932?(13) and 4.8366?(13)?Å are also observed in the structure. The dihydrogen phosphite anions are linked by O-H?O hydrogen bonds into chains running parallel to the a-axis direction. These chains are connected to the cation layer by N-H?O hydrogen bonds.

Project description:In the title compound [systematic name: cyano-(3-phen-oxy-phen-yl)methyl 2,2,3,3-tetra-methyl-cyclo-propane-carboxyl-ate], C22H23NO3, which is the pyrethroid insecticide fenpropathrin, the dihedral angle between the cyclo-propane ring plane and the carboxyl-ate group plane is 88.25?(11)°. The dihedral angle between the benzene and phenyl rings in the phen-oxy-benzyl group is 82.99?(4)°. In the crystal, C-H?N hydrogen bonds and weak C-H?? inter-actions link adjacent mol-ecules, forming loop chains along the b-axis direction.

A further two C-H?O hydrogen bonds together with weak ?-? inter-actions [ring centroid separation = 3.7584?(12)?Å] further aggregate the structure into a three-dimensional architecture.
