A crystal structure reinvestigation of AgF based on a low-temperature high-resolution single-crystal X-ray diffraction data is reported. Silver(I) fluoride crystallizes in the rock salt structure type (<i>Fm</i> <i>m</i>) with a unit-cell parameter of 4.92171 (14) Å at 100 K, resulting in an Ag-F bond length of 2.46085 (7) Å. ...[more]

Project description:The crystal structure of the mineral lautite (copper arsenic sulfide), CuAsS, previously described as either centrosymmetric [Pnma; Marumo & Nowacki (1964 ?). Schweiz. Miner. Petro. Mitt.44, 439-454] or noncentrosymmetric [Pna2(1); Craig & Stephenson (1965 ?). Acta Cryst.19, 543-547], was reinvestigated by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The centrosymmetric structural model reported previously was confirmed, although with improved precision for the atomic coordinates and inter-atomic distances. Lautite shows a sphalerite-derivative structure with a linking of Cu[AsS(3)], As[CuAs(2)S] and S[Cu(3)As] tetra-hedra. All atoms lie on special positions (Wyckoff position 4c, site symmetry m).

Project description:Single crystals of tricadmium orthophosphate, Cd3(PO4)2, have been synthesized successfully by the hydro-thermal route, while its powder form was obtained by a solid-solid process. The corresponding crystal structure was determined using X-ray diffraction data in the monoclinic space group P21/n. The crystal structure consists of Cd2O8 or Cd2O10 dimers linked together by PO4 tetra-hedra through sharing vertices or edges. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to investigate the morphology and to confirm the chemical composition of the synthesized powder. Infrared analysis corroborates the presence of isolated phosphate tetra-hedrons in the structure. UV-Visible studies showed an absorbance peak at 289 nm and a band gap energy of 3.85 eV, as determined by the Kubelka-Munk model.

Project description:Enolase is a dimeric metal-activated metalloenzyme which uses two magnesium ions per subunit: the strongly bound conformational ion and the catalytic ion that binds to the enzyme-substrate complex inducing catalysis. The crystal structure of the human neuronal enolase-Mg2F2P(i) complex (enolase fluoride/phosphate inhibitory complex, EFPIC) determined at 1.36 A resolution shows that the combination of anions effectively mimics an intermediate state in catalysis. The phosphate ion binds in the same site as the phosphate group of the substrate/product, 2-phospho-D-glycerate/phosphoenolpyruvate, and induces binding of the catalytic Mg2+ ion. One fluoride ion bridges the structural and catalytic magnesium ions while the other interacts with the structural magnesium ion and the ammonio groups of Lys 342 and Lys 393. These fluoride ion positions correspond closely to the positions of the oxygen atoms of the substrate's carboxylate moiety. To relate structural changes resulting from fluoride, phosphate, and magnesium ions binding to those that are induced by phosphate and magnesium ions alone, we also determined the structure of the human neuronal enolase-Mg2P(i) complex (enolase phosphate inhibitory complex, EPIC) at 1.92 A resolution. It shows the closed conformation in one subunit and a mixture of open and semiclosed conformations in the other. The EPFIC dimer is essentially symmetric while the EPIC dimer is asymmetric. Isothermal titration calorimetry data confirmed binding of four fluoride ions per dimer and yielded Kb values of 7.5 x 10(5) +/- 1.3 x 10(5), 1.2 x 10(5) +/- 0.2 x 10(5), 8.6 x 10(4) +/- 1.6 x 10(4), and 1.6 x 10(4) +/- 0.7 x 10(4) M(-1). The different binding constants indicate negative cooperativity between the subunits; the asymmetry of EPIC supports such an interpretation.

Project description:Purpose: American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry guidelines recommend treatment of primary teeth with 38 percent silver diamine fluoride (SDF) as a noninvasive option to arrest active dental caries lesions. A significant outcome of SDF treatment are lesions that clinically harden and become more resistant to further decay. Many practicing dentists believe that this increased hardening is due to the reaction of silver and fluoride with carious dentin. The purpose of this study was to focus on the structural and chemical effects of silver diamine fluoride treatment on the native tooth. Methods: In SDF-treated cavitated dentin lesions in teeth subsequently extracted for orthodontic reasons, the authors observed continuous, filamentous silver densities formed in situ from 50 to 2,100 μm in length and 0.25 to 7.0 μm in diameter using high-resolution synchrotron X-ray microcomputer tomography and field emission scanning electron microscopy. These "microwires" fill voids in the lesion caused by disease and permeate through surrounding dentinal tubules. Results: Spectroscopy confirmed that the chemical composition of the observed microwires is predominantly silver. Conclusions: These observations suggest mechanistic explanations for the structural reinforcement of carious dentin in addition to remineralization. It is hypothesized that silver diamine fluoride may achieve its antimicrobial functions by biochemical interactions and through its inherent ability to integrate into the native tooth structure.

Project description:Semiconducting indium sulfide (In2S3) has recently attracted considerable attention as a buffer material in the field of thin film photovoltaics. Compared with this growing interest, however, detailed characterizations of the crystal structure of this material are rather scarce and controversial. In order to close this gap, we have carried out a reinvestigation of the crystal structure of this material with an in situ X-ray diffraction study as a function of temperature using monochromatic synchrotron radiation. For the purpose of this study, high quality polycrystalline In2S3 material with nominally stoichiometric composition was synthesized at high temperatures. We found three modifications of In2S3 in the temperature range between 300 and 1300 K, with structural phase transitions at temperatures of 717 K and above 1049 K. By Rietveld refinement we extracted the crystal structure data and the temperature coefficients of the lattice constants for all three phases, including a high-temperature trigonal γ-In2S3 modification.

Project description:The title compound, (C3H10N2)2[AlF6]F·3H2O, was obtained using the solvothermal method with aluminium hydroxide, HF and propane-1,3-di-amine as precursors in ethanol as solvent. The structure consists of isolated [AlF6](3-) octa-hedra, diprotonated propane-1,3-di-amine cations [(H2dap)(2+)], free fluoride ions and water mol-ecules of solvation. The Al-F bond lengths in the octa-hedral [AlF6](3-) anions range from 1.7690 (19) to 1.8130 (19) Å, with an average value of 1.794 Å. Each [AlF6](3-) anion is surrounded by three water mol-ecules and by six diprotonated amine cations. The 'free' fluoride ion is hydrogen bonded to four H atoms belonging to four dications and has a distorted tetra-hedral geometry. The three water mol-ecules are connected by hydrogen bonds, forming trimers that connect the AlF6 octa-hedra and dications into a three-dimensional framework.

Project description:Aim This study aimed to evaluate the potential discolouration and carious lesion arresting effect of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) and silver diamine fluoride/potassium iodide (SDF/KI) in the treatment of carious primary teeth.Materials and method A total of 30 carious primary canines were randomly assigned to treatment groups where Group I was treated with SDF while Group II was treated with SDF/KI. Caries arrest was assessed based on consistency and stability of lesion size while the discolouration of treated lesions was assessed digitally using a VITA Easyshade spectrophotometer.Results Both treatments demonstrated 100% efficacy in arresting active caries lesions. Regarding discolouration, the total colour difference represented by delta E (ΔE) was 16.45 ± 5.69 for Group I compared to 9.54 ± 3.09 for Group II immediately post-operative, with a statistically significant difference (p = 0.003). Both groups showed similar values at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months after the treatment, with no statistically significant difference. No incidence of serious adverse effects related to either treatment and the majority of parents/guardians were satisfied with both treatments compromising their child's aesthetic appearance.Conclusions Both SDF and SDF/KI are effective in arresting carious lesions in primary teeth but in terms of the discolouration potential, the use of KI significantly reduced the discolouration caused by SDF immediately post-operatively. Unfortunately, marked discolouration was recorded in the subsequent follow-up visits, compromising the aesthetic outcome.

Project description:BackgroundEarly childhood caries (ECC) is the most prevalent chronic health problem in young children, and it can be arrested using professionally applied fluoride such as Sodium fluoride (NaF) varnish and Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF). This trial compared two interventions to arrest ECC lesions: 38% SDF combined with 5% NaF varnish versus 38% SDF and assessed whether the arrest rate was affected by baseline lesion severity measured by ICDAS.MethodsChildren aged ≤ 4 years from 4 nurseries in a rural area in Alexandria, Egypt joined the study in March 2022. They were included if they had at least one active carious lesion with ICDAS codes ≥ 3. They were randomized to receive either 38% SDF with 5% NaF varnish or 38% SDF alone. In both groups, the agents were applied at baseline and after 6 months on the caries lesions. NaF was additionally applied on all teeth in the oral cavity, and it was also applied after three months. The primary outcome was lesion arrest status after six months. Parents' satisfaction with their children's appearance was the secondary outcome. Pearson Chi-Square test was used for bivariate comparison and multi-level multiple logistic regression was used to assess the effect of the intervention on caries arrest controlling for confounders. The interaction between the intervention and baseline lesion severity (categorized into moderate and severe lesions) was assessed and the p value was calculated.ResultsThe study included 1606 lesions in 220 children, median (IQR) age = 48(9) months. The percentages of arrested lesions after the application of SDF + NaF and SDF only were 77.7% and 73.2% (p = 0.035). In multivariable analysis, SDF + NaF had significantly greater caries arrest effect than SDF alone (AOR = 2.12, p = 0.03) with significant difference (p = 0.03) between moderate (AOR = 4.10, p = 0.005) and advanced (AOR = 1.92, p = 0.08) lesions. Most parents were satisfied with their children's appearance with no significant difference between groups (SDF + NaF = 84.5%, SDF = 78.18%, p = 0.23).ConclusionSDF + NaF had a higher arrest rate than SDF alone and this difference was significant in moderate but not advanced lesions. The findings have implications for the non-invasive management of ECC.Trial registrationThis trial was registered in the clinicaltrials.gov registry (#NCT05642494).

Project description:Poly[(μ4-3-carboxybenzenesulfonato)silver(I)], Ag(O3SC6H4CO2H) or [Ag(C7H5O5S)] n , has been found to undergo a reversible phase transition from monoclinic to triclinic between 160 and 150 K. The low-temperature triclinic structure (space group P ) has been determined at 100 K. In contrast to the reported room temperature monoclinic structure, in which the nearly equivalent carboxyl-ate C-O distances indicate that the acidic hydrogen is randomly distributed between the O atoms, at 100 K the C-O (protonated) and C=O (unprotonated) bonds are clearly resolved, resulting in the reduction in symmetry from C2/c to P .

Project description:Silver nanoparticles were produced with AgF as the starting Ag(I) salt, with pectin as the reductant and protecting agent. While the obtained nanoparticles (pAgNP-F) have the same dimensional and physicochemical properties as those already described by us and obtained from AgNO3 and pectin (pAgNP-N), the silver nanoparticles from AgF display an increased antibacterial activity against E. coli PHL628 and Staphylococcus epidermidis RP62A (S. epidermidis RP62A), both as planktonic strains and as their biofilms with respect to pAgNP-N. In particular, a comparison of the antimicrobial and antibiofilm action of pAgNP-F has been carried out with pAgNP-N, pAgNP-N and added NaF, pure AgNO3, pure AgF, AgNO3 and added NaF and pure NaNO3 and NaF salts. By also measuring the concentration of the Ag+ cation released by pAgNP-F and pAgNP-N, we were able to unravel the separate contributions of each potential antibacterial agent, observing an evident synergy between p-AgNP and the F- anion: the F- anion increases the antibacterial power of the p-AgNP solutions even when F- is just 10 µM, a concentration at which F- alone (i.e., as its Na+ salt) is completely ineffective.
