ABSTRACT: The title compound, C(16)H(12)N(2)O, was accidentally synthesized by the reaction of 4-(bromo-meth-yl)benzonitrile and penta-erythritol. The dihedral angle between the benzene rings is 57.39?(9)°. In the crystal structure, mol-ecules are linked by inter-molecular C-H?N hydrogen-bonding inter-actions to form chains running parallel to the b axis.

Project description:The mol-ecule of the title Schiff base compound, C(18)H(14)N(4), lies across a crystallographic inversion centre and adopts an E configuration with respect to the azomethine (C=N) bonds. The imino groups are coplanar with the aromatic rings with a maximum deviation of 0.1574 (12) Å for the N atom. Within the mol-ecule, the planar units are parallel, but extend in opposite directions from the dimethyl-ene bridge. In the crystal structure, pairs of inter-molecular C-H⋯N hydrogen bonds link neighbouring mol-ecules into centrosymmetric dimers with R(2) (2)(10) ring motifs. An inter-esting feature of the crystal structure is the short inter-molecular C⋯C inter-action with a distance of 3.3821 (13) Å, which is shorter than the sum of the van der Waals radius of a carbon atom.

Project description:In the solid state, the title compound, C(22)H(10)N(2)S, forms centrosymmetric dimers by pairs of non-classical C-H⋯S hydrogen bonds linking approximately coplanar mol-ecules. The benzene ring involved in this inter-action makes a dihedral angle of only 7.21 (16)° with the thio-phene ring, while the other benzene ring is twisted somewhat out of the plane, with a dihedral angle of 39.58 (9)°. The hydrogen-bonded dimers stack on top of each other with an inter-planar spacing of 3.44 Å. C-H⋯N hydrogen bonds link together stacks that run in approximately perpendicular directions. Each mol-ecule thus inter-acts with 12 adjacent mol-ecules, five of them approaching closer than the sum of the van der Waals radii for the relevant atoms. Optimization of the inter-stack contacts contributes to the non-planarity of the mol-ecule.
