ABSTRACT: The title compound, C(11)H(8)N(2)O, crystallizes with two crystallographically independent mol-ecules in the asymmetric unit which are approximately perpendicular to each other [79.97?(6)°]. The indole ring system is planar [r.m.s. deviation = 0.010?(1)?Å]. The crystal structure is stabilized by inter-molecular C-H?N and N-H?O inter-actions.

In the crystal, bifurcated N-H⋯(O,N) and N-H⋯N hydrogen bonds involving the pyrrole N-H grouping combine to form zigzag chains along a. Additional N-H⋯O contacts from the hydrazide N-H group augmented by C-H⋯π inter-actions link the mol-ecules into chains along the a axis. The overall effect of these contacts is a three-dimensional network structure with mol-ecules stacked along the b-axis direction.

The dihedral angle between the planes of indole ring system and benzene ring is 50.13?(5)°. The indole plane is significantly less twisted from the plane of the central C-C(=O)-C bridge than the benzene plane [dihedral angles = 15.51?(3) and 40.13?(7)°, respectively]. The bond angles within the benzene ring show an approximately additive effect of the influence of both substituents.
