(1R,2R,4S,5R,6R,8S)-4,8-Dimethyl-2,6-diphenyl-bicyclo-[3.3.1]nonane-2,6-diol.

ABSTRACT: The racemic title compound, C(23)H(28)O(2), crystallizes in the space group C2/c as a layered structure in which a centrosymmetric three hydrogen bond sequence links four molecules. Both hydroxy groups are involved in this arrangement, but they differ in that one participates in two hydrogen bonds while the other takes part in only one. Between layers, the aromatic rings take part in edge-face interactions [shortest C-H⋯C distances 3.04, 3.10 and 3.12 Å and angle between normal to planes 86.7(2)°], forming a centrosymmetric dimer. The lattice is further stabilized by C-H⋯π interactions involving both methyl (shortest C⋯C 3.82 and 3.97 Å) and methylene (shortest C⋯C 3.60 Å) groups.

The C-I bond length is 2.072 (2) Å. The amino group is coplanar with the attached aromatic ring [C-N-C-N torsion angle = -178.8 (2)°] and forms an intra-molecular N-H⋯I hydrogen bond. In the crystal, O-H⋯N and N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds link the mol-ecules into puckered layers parallel to (001). These layers are bound to each other by secondary I⋯O inter-actions [3.2250 (17) Å], forming a three-dimensional framework.

Project description:Treatment of 2,2-bis(trifluoromethyl)-4-R-oxetanes (R = C₂H₅O, n-C₃H₇O, n-C₄H₉O) with BF₃.OEt₂ in CH₂Cl₂ solvent results in spontaneous electrophilic [4 + 4] cyclodimerization with the formation of the corresponding 2,2,6,6-tetrakis(trifluoromethyl)-4,8-dialkoxy-1,5-dioxocanes, isolated in 31-42% yield. The structures of two products (R = C₂H₅O and n-C₃H₇O) were established by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The corresponding oxetane carrying the bulky t-C₄H₉O group has different reactivity towards BF₃.OEt₂, slowly producing a mixture of two acyclic, unsaturated products.Clean and spontaneous reaction with alcohols is another interesting transformation of oxetanes described in this paper. The reaction leads to high yield formation of the corresponding acetals (CF₃)₂C(OH)CH₂CH(OR)OR'.Structurally related 2,2-bis(trifluoromethyl)-4-R-thietanes (R = i-C₃H₇O, t-C₄H₉O and C₂H₅O) have different reactivity towards electrophiles. They are totally inert to the action of BF₃.OEt₂ and rapidly react with a protic acid (H₂SO₄) forming the same product, 3,3,7,7-tetrakis(trifluoromethyl)-9-oxa-2,6-dithia-bicyclo[3.3.1]nonane in 35-50% yield. The structure of this product was established by single crystal X-ray diffraction.

The central oxazolidine ring adopts an almost perfect envelope conformation with the O atom as the flap [puckering parameter ϕ = 0.3 (6)°]. The dihedral angle formed by the benzene rings is 61.81 (9)°. In the crystal, mol-ecules are connected into double chains parallel to [010] by C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds. The absolute configuration was assigned from the synthetic procedure.

In the crystal, the primary tetrone contacts are between a carbonyl O atom and the four flagpole H atoms of the bi-cyclo-[2.2.2]octene core, forming chains along [001].
