ABSTRACT: The reaction of ethyl acetoacetate with meta-cresol in an acidic ionic liquid yielded a complex mixture of condensation products. 4,7-Dimethyl-coumarin and the title compound, C(20)H(22)O(3), were isolated. The title compound shows chemical but not crystallographic mirror symmetry. The two aromatic rings are inclined at an angle of 73.55?(6)°.

Project description:In the title compound, C(19)H(20)N(2)O(6), the pyrone and pyran rings adopt envelope conformations with the same common C atom as the flap, the dihedral angle between the planes of the remaining ring atoms being 68.27?(4)°. The planar atoms of the pyran ring and the diaza-cyclic ring are almost coplanar, the dihedral angle between their mean planes being 3.29?(7)°. Moreover, the planar atoms of the pyrone ring and benzene ring of the coumarin unit are also close to coplanar, the dihedral angle between their mean planes being 8.03?(9)°. The meth-oxy group lies in the plane of the benzene ring, with a dihedral angle between their mean planes of 9.4?(2)°. In the crystal, the molecules are linked by C-H?O hydrogen bonds resulting in sheets of mol-ecules in the ac plane.

The pyrazole ring [maximum deviation = 0.002?(2)?Å] forms a dihedral angle of 13.2?(1)° with the attached benzene ring. The near-planar atoms of the pyran ring and the pyrazole ring are close to coplanar, the dihedral angles between their mean planes being 6.4?(1)°. The dihedral angle between the pyrone ring and the benzene ring of the chromene unit is 10.7?(1)°. The dianion is situated on a crystallographic inversion centre. Two very strong symmetry-restricted O⋯H⋯O hydrogen bonds are present which are situated about the crystallographic inversion centres. In one of these hydrogen bonds, the H atom is situated at its centre, while in the other one the H atom is disordered about its centre. Both H atoms are involved in the chain-like C(2) (2)(16) motif, and not in a more common motif R(2) (2)(8) that is composed of a pair of hydrogen carboxyl-ates with the H atoms situated about the centre between the pair of O atoms. In the crystal, inter-action of these hydrogen bonds results in formation of anionic layers of dianions parallel to (-111). The water mol-ecules donate their H atoms to one of two of the carboxyl-ate O atoms, forming strong hydrogen bonds. The dimethyl-ammonium donates a bifurcated hydrogen bond to an oxo group of the dianion, forming weak hydrogen bonds. All the hydrogen bonds form a three-dimensional hydrogen-bonded network.
