Extensive hydrogen-bonding network and an unusual cation conformation in [tris-(hydroxy-meth-yl)methyl]-ammonium tetra-oxidorhenate(VII).

ABSTRACT: The title compound, (C(4)H(12)NO(3))[ReO(4)], contains two cations and two anions in the asymmetric unit, related by a non-crystallographic centre of symmetry. The crystal structure is stabilized by an extensive hydrogen-bonding network with the formation of puckered layers perpendicular to [001]. In the tris-(hydroxy-meth-yl)ammonium cations, intra-molecular O-H?O hydrogen bonds are present with the formation of an S(1) (1)(6) graph-set motif. The crystal structure is further consolid-ated by N-H?O hydrogen bonds.

Rep.45, 945-950], is inter-preted as a zwitterionic compound. There are two independent zwitterions in the asymmetric unit. Five of the six hydr-oxy groups of the -CH(2)OH fragments are disordered. In one zwitterion, two are disordered over three sites [0.53 (1):0.33 (1):0.14 (1) and 0.65 (1):0.18 (1):0.17 (1)] and the third over two sites [0.66 (1):0.34 (1)]. In the second zwitterion, two are disordered over two sites [0.84 (1):0.16 (1) and 0.83 (1):0.17 (1)] and the third hydr-oxy group is ordered.

The Jahn-Teller distortion of the copper centre is unusally small. In the crystal structure, O-H?O hydrogen bonds, some of which are bifurcated, link the component species.

Project description:Cation-pi bonds and amino-aromatic interactions are known to be important contributors to protein architecture and stability, and their role in ligand-protein interactions has also been reported. Many biologically active amines contain substituted ammonium moieties, and cation-pi bonding and amino-aromatic interactions often enable these molecules to associate with proteins. The role of organic cation-pi bonding and amino-aromatic interactions in the recognition of small-molecule amines and peptides by proteins is an important topic for those involved in structure-based drug design, and although the number of structures determined for proteins displaying these interactions is small, general features are beginning to emerge. This review explores the role of cation-pi bonding and amino-aromatic interactions in the biological molecular recognition of amine ligands. Perspectives on the design of ammonium-ligand-binding sites are also discussed.

Project description:The cations and anions of the title salt, 3C(6)H(16)N(+)·HSO(4) (-)·SO(4) (2-), are linked by N-H?O and O-H?O hydrogen bonds into a three-dimensional network. The hydrogensulfate ion, with a single S-O(H) bond of 1.563?(2)?Å, forms a short O-H?O hydrogen bond [O?O = 2.609?(2)?Å] to the sulfate ion. The hydrogensulfate ion accepts two hydrogen bonds from two cations, whereas the sulfate ion, as an acceptor, binds to four cations. The sulfate ion is disordered approximately equally over two sites related by rotation around one of the O-S bonds.

A Non-Covalent Dimer Formation of Quaternary Ammonium Cation with Unusual Charge Neutralization in Electrospray-Ionization Mass Spectrometry.

Project description:Specific and nonspecific non-covalent molecular association of biomolecules is characteristic for electrospray-ionization mass spectrometry analysis of biomolecules. Understanding the interaction between two associated molecules is of significance not only from the biological point of view but also gas phase analysis by mass spectrometry. Here we reported a formation of non-covalent dimer of quaternary ammonium denatonium cation with +1 charge detected in the positive ion mode electrospray ionization mass spectrometry analysis of denatonium benzoate. Hydrogen deuterium exchange of amide and carbon-bonded hydrogens revealed that charge neutralization of one denatonium cation is the consequence of amide hydrogen dissociation. DFT (Density Functional Theory) calculations proved high thermodynamic stable of formed dimer stabilized by the short and strong N..H-N hydrogen bond. The signal intensity of the peak characterizing non-covalent dimer is low intensity and does not depend on the sample concentration. Additionally, dimer observation was found to be instrument-dependent. The current investigation is the first experimental and theoretical study on the quaternary ammonium ions dimer. Thus the present study has great significance for understanding the structures of the biomolecules as well as materials.
