ABSTRACT: The mol-ecule of the title compound, C(15)H(12)N(2)O(2), displays a trans configuration with respect to the C=N double bond. The dihedral angle between the two benzene rings is 30.46?(14)°. A strong intra-molecular O-H?O hydrogen bond stabilizes the mol-ecular structure.

Intra-molecular O-H?N hydrogen bonding results in the formation of a planar six-membered ring, which is nearly coplanar with the adjacent ring at a dihedral angle of 1.53?(3)°. In the crystal structure, ?-? contacts between the benzene rings [centroid-centroid distance = 3.841?(1)?Å] may stabilize the structure.

Two intra-molecular O-H?N and N-H?N hydrogen bonds involving the hydr-oxy and amino groups generate S(6) and S(5) ring motifs, respectively. In the crystal structure, N-H?O hydrogen bonds link neighboring mol-ecules. Mol-ecules are also stacked in a head-to-tail fashion along the c axis through ?-? inter-actions [centroid-centroid separation of 3.7357?(12)?Å] and are further linked by weak inter-molecular C-H?? inter-actions, giving a zigzag arrangement along the b axis.

Project description:The Schiff base mol-ecule of the title compound, C(15)H(14)N(2)O(4)·H(2)O, adopts a trans configuration with respect to the C=N double bond; the Schiff base itself is almost planar (r.m.s. deviation for all non-H atoms = 0.040 Å). The amido N atom is the hydrogen-bond donor to the water mol-ecule, which is the hydrogen-bond donor to the hydr-oxy groups of two neighboring mol-ecules. One of the hydroxyl groups acts as an intra-molecular and the other as an inter-molecular hydrogen-bond donor.

The inter-planar angle between the benzene and acetohydrazide planes is 8.50?(10)°. In the crystal, mol-ecules are linked into a three-dimensional network by strong and weak O-H?O and strong N-H?O hydrogen bonds. The hydr-oxy H atom deviates from the 4-hydr-oxy-3-methoxy-phenyl mean plane by 0.319?(2)?Å, probably due to the involvement of this H atom in the O-H?O hydrogen bond. The weak O-H?O hydrogen bond is involved in a bifurcated hydrogen bond with R(1) (2)(4) motif. A weak C-H?? inter-action is also present.

The benzene and phenyl rings are oriented at dihedral angles of 69.18 (8) and 26.0 (5)° (major and minor orientations, respectively), and an intra-molecular O-H⋯O hydrogen bond occurs. In the crystal, mol-ecules are linked by N-H⋯O, O-H⋯O and C-H⋯O inter-actions, generating a three-dimensional network.
